No—Mike Ashley did not take over Sheffield Wednesday. The EFL confirmed on 2 May 2026 that the administrators had completed an asset transfer to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. Sheffield Wednesday had exited administration under its new ownership.
Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?
The completed buyer named by the EFL is Arise Capital Partners LLC, not Mike Ashley. The EFL said the administrators had formally concluded the transfer of the club’s assets and that the club had met the league’s requirements under its new ownership. BBC Sport also reported the completed Arise acquisition and the end of Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said: “Together, we have managed to move this to a successful conclusion and I would like to wish everybody at the Club, in particular the new ownership and their associates, all the very best for a long and prosperous future that will benefit not only those at the Football Club, but also the supporters and the local community it represents.” Read the EFL announcement.
What is known about Mike Ashley’s role?
The official records cited for the completed sale identify Arise as the buyer; they do not establish the exact nature, amount or timing of any Mike Ashley bid, or whether he was a finalist. Companies House records an administrator’s proposal filed on 5 March 2026 and a progress report filed on 2 June 2026, but the registry listing alone does not settle the details of competing bids. Without stronger direct sourcing, claims about Ashley’s offer or status in the process should be treated as unverified.

What happened to Sheffield Wednesday’s administration?
October 2025: the club entered administration
On 24 October 2025, the EFL said Sheffield Wednesday had taken the necessary steps to appoint administrators to the club and the company that owns Hillsborough. The league said administration triggered a 12-point deduction under its regulations. See the EFL’s October 2025 statement.
May 2026: the sale completed and the club exited administration
On 2 May 2026, the EFL confirmed the asset transfer to Arise Capital Partners LLC and said Sheffield Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration. The league did not impose a 15-point deduction on exit. Instead, it placed the club under a budget restriction for the next two seasons; player registrations must follow a business plan agreed with the EFL. Is the takeover complete?
Yes. The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement says the administrators had formally concluded the transfer and that the club had met the relevant league requirements under its new ownership. That is the completed transaction—not merely reported interest, an offer, preferred-bidder status or regulatory approval awaiting completion.
