No. Mike Ashley was reported to have bid for Sheffield Wednesday during the club’s administration, but he did not become its owner. Sheffield Wednesday’s joint administrators confirmed on 5 May 2026 that the sale had completed to Arise Capital Partners LLC, ending Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
What happened to Mike Ashley’s reported bid?
On 11 March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Ashley was understood to have made a bid while Sheffield Wednesday was in administration. That report established that he was among the interested parties; it did not say he had been selected or had bought the club. BBC Sport’s 11 March report also said Arise Capital Partners was in an exclusive negotiation period as the preferred bidder.
Those were different positions in a sale process: Ashley was reported to have bid, while Arise had preferred-bidder status and exclusive negotiations. Neither status alone meant that a sale had completed.
Who took over Sheffield Wednesday?
The joint administrators confirmed that the sale completed to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The consortium was led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. In its 5 May 2026 completion notice, the administrators said: “The Joint Administrators of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited are pleased to confirm the successful completion of the sale of the Club to Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin.” Read the administrators’ completion notice.

BBC Sport reported the takeover announcement on 2 May 2026 and said it officially ended Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership. The administrators’ later notice confirmed completion of the sale. BBC Sport’s 2 May account reported that the EFL would not impose the threatened 15-point deduction after the club exited administration, and that two seasons of budget restrictions were a membership condition. Those details are from the contemporaneous May report, not a new EFL ruling in October 2026. The EFL was quoted by BBC as calling the situation “an incredibly challenging and complex situation for all parties.”

Companies House lists later filings for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited, including an administrator’s progress report filed on 2 June 2026, a creditors’ meeting result filed on 16 July, and an administration-period extension filed on 30 August. The company’s Companies House filing history records filings about that company’s administration. Their appearance after the club sale announcement does not establish that the acquisition itself remained incomplete.
