Yes—but the claim refers to a former, invitation-only Instagram Reels Play bonus, not a standard payment for a viral video. Some historical offers reportedly reached $10,000, but the amount was not guaranteed to every creator or attached automatically to any view count. Meta says it stopped extending new and renewed Instagram Reels Play deals in the United States and India on March 9, 2023; existing deals continued only until they expired.
What was Instagram’s Reels bonus?
Meta introduced creator bonuses in 2021 as part of a broader investment in creators. An early Instagram incentive was called the Reels summer bonus; the better-known Instagram Reels Play program later rewarded invited creators for eligible Reel performance. Meta described bonuses as evolving programs, rather than a permanent, universal payment system. Meta’s 2021 announcement explains the initial creator investment and bonus initiative.
“Bonus,” “Reels Play,” and other Instagram monetization products are not interchangeable. Reels Play was a promotional performance incentive with offer-specific rules. Gifts, subscriptions, branded content and other tools are separate ways creators may earn, subject to their own terms and availability.
What did the $10,000 figure mean?
Some historical offers reportedly had potential payouts as high as $10,000. That was an offer ceiling, not a promise to pay $10,000 for one Reel, a fixed rate per view, or a standard reward for reaching a particular number of plays. Offers could differ by creator, location, account and bonus period, and the applicable offer determined which content and plays counted. The difference between views and earnings was substantial: TechCrunch reported one creator received $689.90 for about 1.49 million plays during a bonus period. That reported example is not a rate that can be applied to other creators or campaigns; it illustrates why a large view count did not imply a five-figure payment.
Who could earn a Reels Play bonus?
Participation was invitation-only. Instagram could notify an eligible creator or show an offer in the Professional Dashboard. The creator had to accept the specific offer by its deadline; a Reel that went viral without an active offer did not qualify for a Reels Play payment. There was no single checklist that applied identically to every deal. Terms could set geographic or language limits, qualifying content and play rules, the earning period, milestones or maximum payout. Creators also generally needed an eligible professional account, policy-compliant and original content, authentic engagement, and completed payout details. The offer in the account—not a general view-count claim—controlled.
Why could millions of views still mean no bonus?
Views alone did not establish eligibility or payment. For example, a creator with millions of plays but no active offer would not receive a Reels Play bonus. A creator with an offer could still earn nothing on content that fell outside its rules or whose views were inauthentic. If the creator had qualifying plays, the amount depended on the deal’s terms and cap. These are illustrative cases, not reported individual outcomes.

- The creator was not invited or did not accept the offer before its deadline.
- The Reel fell outside the bonus period or did not meet the deal’s content requirements.
- The video was unoriginal, private, deleted or otherwise ineligible under the applicable terms.
- Views were fraudulent, artificially boosted or otherwise treated as inauthentic.
- The account did not meet monetization or community policies, or payout information was incomplete.
- The offer applied to a different country, account or Meta platform, or had already expired.
Instagram’s content monetization policies exclude or restrict unoriginal content and certain formats, including static-image videos, slideshows, looping content, text montages and engagement bait. Specific eligibility depended on the program terms in effect.
Is Instagram still offering Reels Play?
No. Meta says it stopped extending new and renewed Instagram Reels Play deals in the United States and India on March 9, 2023, and honored existing deals until they expired. The original program is no longer active; an old article, screenshot or payout anecdote is not evidence that a creator can sign up today. Meta’s help page provides the discontinuation details.

This applies to the Instagram Reels Play program, not every possible Instagram incentive or monetization feature. Meta can test or change separate products, and availability can vary by location and account. Facebook Reels also had separate programs and terms; its historical bonus figures should not be treated as Instagram offers. Meta’s Facebook Reels announcement describes a distinct program.

Current earning options are separate from Reels Play. A Reel may help a creator attract an audience or a brand even when Instagram pays no direct view-based bonus. Check which tools are actually available to the account, and read their terms before counting on income.

Gifts on Reels
Eligible viewers can send virtual Gifts on Reels. Meta says eligible creators receive $0.01 per Star received, subject to its terms and payout setup. Its help page lists requirements including a professional account, age 18 or older, policy compliance, payout setup and at least 500 followers. Gifts depend on viewers choosing to send them; views alone do not create a payment. See Meta’s Gifts eligibility and payout information.
Brand partnerships and Creator Marketplace
Creators may work with brands through sponsored content or partnership ads. Instagram’s Creator Marketplace helps eligible professional accounts connect with brands, but it is not a direct payment for views, and a listing does not guarantee a campaign. See Meta’s Creator Marketplace information.
Other account-dependent tools
Subscriptions, Live badges, affiliate or commerce features, and other monetization products may be available to some creators. Their eligibility and terms differ, so do not assume a feature or payout applies simply because another creator has it.
How to check your account and get paid
- Open Instagram, go to your profile and tap Professional dashboard.
- Review available Monetization, Your tools or Bonuses sections. Menu names and feature availability can vary by app version, account and location.
- If an offer appears, read its eligibility, qualifying content, dates, payment rules and maximum before accepting or making plans around it.
- Set up payout details only through Instagram’s official flow. Meta requires payout information to receive monetization earnings; accurate legal name, address, tax identification and bank or payment details may be required. Changes to payment information during a payment cycle can delay payment. See Meta’s payout setup instructions.
- For an unclear offer or payment, use Help → Monetisation help → Contact support if that path is available. Meta says monetization support for professional accounts can cover products such as bonuses, Gifts, subscriptions, badges and branded content; access varies. Details are on its monetization support page.

Watch for fake bonus offers
Do not buy views, use bots or pay a third party claiming it can unlock a secret Instagram bonus. Artificial engagement can invalidate earnings and put an account at risk. Treat in-app offer terms as authoritative, and never send banking, tax or login information to an unofficial account or service.
