No signed $9 billion J-10 purchase is established by the available reports. In October 2025, Indonesian officials described plans to acquire at least 42 J-10C fighters and said the Finance Ministry had approved a budget exceeding $9 billion. In May 2026, however, a Ministry of Defense spokesperson said there was no contract for the reported 42 aircraft. The budget figure was not a published contract price, and the reporting does not establish a delivery date.
What Indonesia announced in October 2025
On 15 October 2025, the Associated Press reported that Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said Indonesia would soon buy at least 42 Chinese-made Chengdu J-10C fighters. He told reporters, “They will be flying over Jakarta soon,” but declined to give further purchase details.
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said his ministry had approved a budget of more than US$9 billion. That statement was about budget approval—not a disclosed purchase contract, a confirmed final price, or money already spent. Sadewa also said he needed to check when the aircraft would arrive, so his remarks did not provide a delivery schedule. Associated Press report, 15 October 2025.
What the Ministry said about a contract
On 5 May 2026, Indonesian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Rico Ricardo Sirait told Bloomberg Technoz that no procurement contract existed for the 42 Chengdu J-10C aircraft described in reports. His statement addressed the reported contract for that quantity; it did not definitively say Indonesia had no interest in the aircraft or would never pursue a purchase. Bloomberg Technoz report, 5 May 2026.

That distinction matters: a stated intention and ministry budget approval do not by themselves establish a signed procurement contract. The available reporting therefore does not support calling the $9 billion deal confirmed.
A separate report concerns J-10B financing
Janes reported in 2026 that Indonesia’s Finance Ministry had approved plans to fund three Chinese defense programs through foreign loans. For a J-10B tranche, the Defense Ministry was cleared to seek up to US$1.6 billion from foreign export-credit agencies, bilateral creditors, or private lenders. Janes said it understood Indonesia planned to procure second-hand J-10B airframes previously used by China’s air force. Its account was based on documents provided by a source close to the matter. What the August 2026 defense dialogue does—and does not—show
Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense summary of the 21 August 2026 Indonesia–China 2+2 meeting described defense communication, exercises, education, personnel exchanges, and defense-industry cooperation. It also noted Indonesia’s emphasis on technology transfer and workforce capacity. The summary did not announce a J-10 contract, so it provides context about broader defense cooperation rather than confirmation of this purchase. ANTARA reported on 16 October 2025 that a Defense Ministry spokesperson said the Air Force was evaluating whether the J-10 suited Indonesia’s air-defense needs, and that no budget amount had yet been discussed at that time. TNI spokesperson Maj. Gen. Freddy Ardianzah said the military operates equipment acquired by Ministry of Defense decision and would prepare support infrastructure and personnel only if the ministry decided to buy. That report describes evaluation and the division of responsibilities, not a signed order. ANTARA report, 16 October 2025.

What remains unresolved
- Whether Indonesia later signed any J-10 contract; the May 2026 statement denied a contract for the reported 42 J-10Cs, while the August ministry summary did not announce one.
- The final aircraft variant and quantity, given the separate J-10C and J-10B reporting.
- A binding purchase price and the final funding arrangement; the reported budget approval and possible foreign-loan ceiling are not equivalent to an executed contract price.
- When any aircraft would be delivered; the cited reports establish no delivery schedule.
