Airbus delivered 351 commercial aircraft in the first half of 2026, up from 306 a year earlier, and still targets around 870 deliveries for the full year. But those delivery totals do not mean the company has solved the production bottlenecks: Airbus says Pratt & Whitney engine supply remains the key pacing constraint for the A320 Family ramp-up. Lars Wagner, who became head of Airbus Commercial Aircraft on 1 January 2026, acknowledged that ramp-up execution would involve “a lot of issues” at a Dublin event later that month.
What Lars Wagner said about increasing aircraft production
At an industry event in Dublin on 26 January 2026, Wagner said, according to Reuters: “The way I look at it right now is, first, there are a lot of issues that we need to tackle in order to manage the ramp-up.” Reuters reported that he was discussing the challenge of increasing output, including for the A350, and that he appeared supportive of a larger A220.
The remark was about managing production growth; it was not a declaration that Airbus could not meet its targets. It was also made in January, not alongside Airbus’s later first-half results. Reuters is the source for the quotation because no primary transcript of the Dublin remarks was located.
Who is Airbus Commercial Aircraft’s new CEO?
Wagner succeeded Christian Scherer as CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft on 1 January 2026. Airbus announced the appointment on 10 July 2025, when Wagner was CEO of engine maker MTU Aero Engines, a role he had held since January 2023. He had previously held management positions at Airbus. What Airbus’s latest 2026 figures show
In results dated 29 July 2026, Airbus reported 351 commercial-aircraft deliveries in the first half of the year, compared with 306 in the first half of 2025. The company retained its full-year guidance of around 870 deliveries. It also said production rates were tracking its targets. These delivery figures describe aircraft handed over to customers; they are not a direct measure of monthly production rates. A completed aircraft can be awaiting engines, customer acceptance or handover before it counts as a delivery.
Airbus’s stated production-rate targets are:

What is holding back the A320 Family ramp-up?
Airbus identifies Pratt & Whitney engine supply as the key pacing factor for the A320 Family ramp-up in 2026 and 2027. In its account, the engine maker faces competing demands: supplying new-aircraft production while supporting in-service engines affected by a metal-powder issue and low durability of the then-current engine version. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury also cited parts bottlenecks and limits in maintenance, repair and overhaul capacity at the company’s February 2026 annual press conference.
That is Airbus management’s explanation of the constraint, not an independent assessment of Pratt & Whitney’s operations. The point for the production outlook is that increasing aircraft assembly alone cannot guarantee a faster delivery pace if engines and maintenance capacity do not keep up. Airbus’s first-quarter report had already identified Pratt & Whitney as a key pacer; the later first-half results retained that concern. How to read the targets against the delivery numbers
- Deliveries are completed handovers. The 351 figure counts aircraft Airbus delivered to customers during H1 2026.
- Monthly rates are production goals. The A320 target of 70–75 a month by end-2027 is a forward-looking target, not a current output figure.
- The bottleneck is family-specific. Airbus specifically identifies Pratt & Whitney supply as the key pacer for the A320 Family. The A220, A330 and A350 targets are separate production plans; the cited engine constraint should not be generalized to all four programs.
- Company guidance is not a guarantee. Airbus retained its around-870 delivery outlook and production targets in July, while acknowledging the supply constraint.
