No—not for $23 billion. In July 2024, reports said Alphabet, Google’s parent, was in advanced talks to buy cloud-security company Wiz for approximately $23 billion. Wiz ended those talks on July 22, 2024. Google later signed a separate, definitive $32 billion all-cash agreement in March 2025 and completed the acquisition on March 11, 2026. Alphabet subsequently reported approximately $29.5 billion of purchase consideration after closing adjustments.
That makes the $23 billion headline a genuine historical acquisition proposal, not a completed transaction.

What the original $23 billion report actually said
Major reports on July 14–15, 2024 said Alphabet was in advanced negotiations to acquire Wiz for about $23 billion. Reuters attributed the information to a person familiar with the matter, while other coverage cited The Wall Street Journal and company sources. The reported proposal would have been Alphabet’s largest acquisition at that time.

There was no announced definitive agreement. A reported offer or advanced negotiation can still fail because the parties have not signed final documents, obtained approvals or accepted the commercial terms. The accurate description is therefore “Alphabet was reportedly in talks to acquire Wiz for approximately $23 billion,” not “Google acquired Wiz for $23 billion.”

Why the 2024 deal did not happen
On July 22, 2024, Wiz chief executive Assaf Rappaport told employees that the company was ending discussions and returning to its plan to pursue an initial public offering. The memo also described a goal of reaching $1 billion in annual recurring revenue.
That decision—not a regulator formally rejecting the transaction—was the immediate reason the $23 billion proposal did not close. News reports discussed possible concerns about valuation, antitrust scrutiny and the attraction of remaining independent, but those were reported possibilities rather than confirmed causes. The public record establishes that Wiz walked away from the talks.

Wiz
Wiz is a New York-headquartered cloud and AI-security company. Its platform connects to major cloud environments and is designed to provide visibility, risk assessment, prevention, detection and response across cloud and hybrid infrastructure. It is not simply an endpoint-antivirus product, and its multicloud orientation was central to its appeal.
Google’s product description is available in its Google Cloud completion announcement.
Why Google wanted Wiz
Cloud security is a strategic layer around enterprise cloud adoption. Google Cloud competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, while many large customers operate across more than one cloud. Wiz’s ability to assess environments across providers could help Google sell security services even when a customer is not exclusively a Google Cloud user.
The proposed purchase also fit Google’s broader security expansion after Alphabet acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion in 2022. Reuters characterized the Wiz proposal as a way to strengthen Google’s cloud-security offering and compete more effectively with Microsoft and Amazon.
The later transaction was a different deal
On March 18, 2025, Google announced a signed agreement to acquire Wiz for $32 billion in cash, subject to closing adjustments and regulatory approvals. This was not the $23 billion proposal quietly revived at its original price; it was a later definitive agreement with a different headline value and a different legal status.
Google announced completion on March 11, 2026. Alphabet’s first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q, filed for the period ended March 31, recorded approximately $29.5 billion of purchase price after purchase-price adjustments, excluding post-combination compensation arrangements.

Why $23 billion, $32 billion and $29.5 billion can all appear in accurate coverage
- $23 billion describes the approximate value reported for the proposed 2024 transaction that Wiz rejected.
- $32 billion is the headline value of the definitive all-cash agreement announced in March 2025.
- Approximately $29.5 billion is Alphabet’s reported purchase consideration after closing adjustments in its 2026 filing.
Announced deal value and accounting purchase price are not always identical. Closing mechanics can reflect items such as acquired cash, liabilities, working-capital adjustments and other purchase-accounting provisions. Alphabet’s preliminary allocation also listed approximately $22.689 billion of goodwill, $8.3 billion of intangible assets and about $1.522 billion of net liabilities assumed. Those accounting amounts explain the filing’s presentation; they do not rewrite the $32 billion headline announced when the contract was signed.
What Wiz’s ownership means for customers
As of August 18, 2026, Wiz is part of Google Cloud. Google says it is retaining the Wiz brand and that Wiz products will continue to work across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Platform, as well as hybrid environments.

- The 6.3-inch Pixel 7 display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[4]
- Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos
Those are Google’s stated operating intentions, not a guarantee that every future package, price or product roadmap will remain unchanged. Enterprise buyers should monitor:
- Whether AWS, Azure, Oracle Cloud, Kubernetes and hybrid-environment support remains as broad as before.
- Changes to telemetry, data-handling and regional data-governance policies.
- Any bundling with Google Cloud, Security Command Center or Mandiant.
- Existing contracts, reseller terms, partner integrations and renewal conditions.
- Pricing, packaging, service-level commitments and possible vendor-concentration effects.
Google’s stated multicloud approach means Wiz should not automatically be treated as a Google-only security product. Future commercial and technical changes require confirmation in current customer documentation.
How to read acquisition headlines correctly
- Rumor or report: Information from people familiar with negotiations; no signed deal is established.
- Offer or proposal: A reported price that may not have been accepted.
- Definitive agreement: The companies announce a signed contract, normally subject to conditions.
- Completed acquisition: The transaction closes and appears in the buyer’s filings.
The $23 billion Wiz story reached the first two stages only. The later $32 billion transaction reached the third stage in 2025 and the fourth in March 2026.
Bottom line for investors and business readers
The July 2024 report was real reporting, but it described a failed proposal. Wiz ended those talks, and no $23 billion acquisition closed. Google later agreed to buy Wiz for $32 billion in cash and completed that separate transaction on March 11, 2026; Alphabet then reported approximately $29.5 billion after purchase-price adjustments. Any article that stops at the 2024 rumor—or calls the completed deal a $23 billion acquisition—misses the essential history.
