He made an open-ended remark about “companies to acquire” at a film premiere, and separately said he would buy Disney shares under one specific condition. Neither statement named a bid for the company, and the reporting behind both is from 2024. It does not establish what has happened since.
The red-carpet remark that started the speculation
In February 2024, Musk attended the Los Angeles premiere of Lola. A FabTV reporter asked him why he was there. He answered, “I’m just here with friends… Thinking about what companies to acquire,” then walked away chuckling. Futurism reported the exchange on February 7, 2024.
Disney was never named. The remark fit a story that was already running because of the public dispute between Musk and Disney’s CEO at the time, Bob Iger, and because activist investor Nelson Peltz, who was then pushing for changes at Disney, was in the same orbit that night. Futurism presented that link as interpretation, not as evidence of a plan. A vague answer to a reporter’s question is easy to read as a hint, but it carries no price, timeline, or offer.
What the other Disney comments were
A user’s suggestion, not Musk’s words
Later in February 2024, Musk posted “Disney sucks” in response to rumors about a possible Pirates of the Caribbean project. A user replied, “Elon, you should buy Disney!” That line is the user’s. Salon quoted it, and it should be attributed to an X user, not to Musk.

A thinking emoji
A Benzinga report from the same period described Musk replying with a thinking emoji to a user’s suggestion that he buy Disney. The emoji is ambiguous. It can be read as amusement, as noncommittal, or as nothing at all, and it is not an offer or an announcement.
The April 2024 conditional share statement
The most specific comment came during Disney’s 2024 proxy contest. In an April 3, 2024 post on X, quoted by Fortune, Musk wrote: “While I don’t own any Disney shares today, I would definitely buy their shares if Nelson were elected to the board.”
That statement has two parts that matter. First, Musk said he did not own Disney stock at that time. Second, the stock purchase was conditional on Peltz winning a board seat. Peltz did not win a seat in that vote, so the condition was not met, and the statement did not turn into a purchase. It was also a statement about buying shares, not about acquiring the company.
The three statements compared
| Statement | Who said it | Date | What it commits to | Condition or limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Thinking about what companies to acquire” | Musk, at the Lola premiere, as reported by Futurism | February 2024 | Nothing specific; Disney not named | Open-ended; no target named |
| “You should buy Disney!” | An X user replying to Musk, as quoted by Salon | February 2024 | Nothing; a suggestion from a third party | Not Musk’s statement |
| “I would definitely buy their shares if Nelson were elected to the board” | Musk, X post, as quoted by Fortune | April 3, 2024 | Buying Disney shares | Only if Peltz joined the board; Musk said he owned no Disney shares at the time |
Why the difference between shares and a company matters
For a personal investor, the gap between buying shares and acquiring a company is the whole story. A shareholder who buys a few shares owns a small slice and has no control over the business. Acquiring a company means buying enough of it to control its board and operations, which requires a deal for the whole company or a controlling stake, and that typically involves much larger sums, regulatory review, and shareholder approval.

Musk’s 2024 comments touch only the first of these. Nothing in them establishes that he wanted control of Disney. Readers should also remember that rumors about a takeover can move a stock price on their own, so a headline about a possible buyer does not tell you whether the price move reflects a real deal.
How to check whether anything has changed since 2024
The reporting cited here cannot confirm the current situation. If you want to know whether a Disney bid or share purchase has been announced since then, check primary records rather than social media posts or reposted headlines:

- Search the SEC’s EDGAR database for Disney filings. Acquisition announcements of a public company usually appear as Form 8-K filings.
- Look for Schedule 13D filings naming Musk or his entities as beneficial owners of Disney stock. Under SEC rules, an investor who crosses 5% of a registered class of equity generally must file a Schedule 13D, so a large holding should appear there.
- Check Disney’s investor relations newsroom for official statements about any offer or deal.
- Compare any new claim against the date and wording of the original post. A screenshot or secondhand summary often drops the condition, as the April 2024 statement shows.
If none of these sources shows a filing, an announcement, or a confirmed transaction, the 2024 comments remain what they were: a vague remark, a third-party suggestion, and a conditional share purchase that never came into effect.

The word “hint” is the headline’s framing, not a verified intent. Musk did say something about acquisitions near the Disney story, and he did discuss buying Disney shares under a condition. Neither was a declared plan to buy the company, and reading either as one goes beyond what was said.
