According to a March 6, 2025, report, Elon Musk said the U.S. Postal Service and Amtrak should be privatized. The remarks were reported from a closed conference, not announced as a government decision. The available sources do not establish that either service was privatized or that Musk’s comments became a formal policy plan.
What did Musk reportedly say?
Gizmodo reported on March 6, 2025, that Musk made the remarks by teleconference the previous day to Morgan Stanley’s TMT conference in San Francisco. The event was closed to the press. Gizmodo attributed the quotation to Reuters and NBC News; it did not present an original recording or official transcript.
As reported, Musk said, “I think logically we should privatize anything that can reasonably be privatized,” and named the Post Office and Amtrak as examples, adding, “We should privatize everything we possibly can.” This is a reported personal position, not evidence of an enacted change or a formal government proposal. Does the Constitution require the Post Office to be government-run?
The Constitution gives Congress the power “To establish Post Offices and post Roads.” That clause places authority with Congress, but its wording alone does not resolve every possible arrangement for operating postal services. It should not be read as proof that every private contract or other operating model is prohibited—or as proof that a particular privatization plan would be lawful. That constitutional text specifically refers to post offices and post roads. It is not a parallel constitutional provision about Amtrak. Amtrak describes itself as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation and a passenger-rail service provider; its site also lists travel and tour options. Amtrak’s description of the organization does not establish anything about a privatization proposal.
What would privatization mean in practice?
“Privatize” can describe materially different changes. Without a specific proposal, it is not possible to say whether Musk meant transferring ownership, changing who operates services, or another arrangement. A real plan would need to answer questions such as:

- Ownership: Would the government retain infrastructure and other assets, or transfer them?
- Service obligations: Who would set and enforce requirements for routes, coverage, or universal service?
- Funding and risk: Who would pay for required services and bear financial losses?
- Prices and access: What rules would govern rates and availability?
- Accountability: Who would answer for service failures, and through what oversight?
These are questions a proposal would have to settle, not details established by the reported remarks. The two organizations also provide different services, so an unspecified call to privatize both does not describe one shared operating model.

The available reporting and government hearing record do not establish that a formal privatization proposal or later policy action followed Musk’s March 2025 comments. The House Oversight hearing transcript, “Rightsizing Government,” dated February 5, 2025, records sharp arguments among members and witnesses about DOGE, privatization, public services, and congressional authority. Those statements are arguments made by speakers, not findings by a court or proof that a specific plan was adopted.

USPS’s financials page says reports are filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission under the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006, but the page does not itself provide a current financial figure for this article. USPS financial reports should be consulted for figures tied to a specific reporting period rather than relying on an unqualified loss or deficit claim.
As of the March 2025 reporting, the defensible conclusion is narrow: Musk reportedly expressed support for privatizing USPS and Amtrak, but the cited sources do not show that either service changed ownership or that his remarks became official policy.
