Disney’s Snow White had a chart-topping opening in the UK and Ireland, but the evidence does not support calling its overall theatrical run a sustained surge. It opened there with £3.85 million over March 21–23, 2025, while its North American launch came in below tracking expectations and its second weekend fell sharply. The “40%” Rotten Tomatoes figure is also a dated snapshot, not the live score.
What the box-office “surge” actually describes
The strongest basis for the word “surge” is a three-day opening in one market. Disney UK said the film opened at number one in the UK and Ireland from March 21–23, 2025, with £3.85 million and 43% of ticket sales. That is a strong regional opening; it is not evidence by itself of a worldwide trend or a lasting hit. Disney UK’s release also attributed audience-rating data to comScore: four stars across audience demographics, a Total Positive score of 88% among children and 94% among girls. Those audience figures are Disney’s account of comScore results, not a separately verified box-office measure.
Other measures tell a less buoyant story. The Associated Press reported a North American opening of $43 million, below tracking expectations of $50 million or more, and an overseas opening of $44.3 million, for a reported global launch of $87.3 million. The North American second weekend then fell 66%; AP reported a $143.1 million global haul after two weeks. An opening-weekend ticket-sales share, a regional chart position, and a later worldwide gross describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Opening and later performance at a glance
| Measure | Reported result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| UK and Ireland opening, March 21–23, 2025 | £3.85 million; 43% of ticket sales; number one | A strong opening in that territory, according to Disney UK. |
| North American opening weekend | $43 million | Below the $50 million-or-more tracking expectation described by Rotten Tomatoes Editorial; AP reported the opening estimate. |
| Global launch | $87.3 million | AP’s reported total of a $43 million North American opening and $44.3 million overseas opening. |
| North American second weekend | Down 66% | A steep drop, despite the strong UK and Ireland opening; AP also reported $143.1 million worldwide after two weeks. |
| Worldwide theatrical gross | $205,679,463 | The Numbers database reports $87,203,963 domestic and $118,475,500 international. These are database totals, not a profitability calculation. |

What happened to the 40% Rotten Tomatoes score?
The title’s 40% figure refers to a particular point in time. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes’ live film page showed a 39% Tomatometer based on 277 critic reviews and a 69% Popcornmeter based on more than 2,500 verified audience ratings. Scores can change as reviews and audience ratings are added, so those figures are a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rating. The critic score and audience score also measure different groups; neither is a box-office number.
How controversy fits—and what it cannot prove
Controversy surrounded the film before release. AP coverage discussed debate over the CGI depiction of the dwarfs and backlash over Rachel Zegler’s comments; it also reported that Disney pulled back on its premiere. That is relevant context for a film opening amid public debate, but the reported box-office figures do not isolate the effect of controversy. They cannot establish that controversy caused the opening, the second-weekend decline, or the final gross.

Where the full theatrical run ended
The Numbers database lists the film’s final worldwide theatrical gross as $205,679,463, comprising $87,203,963 domestic and $118,475,500 international. It also lists May 13, 2025, as the video release date for Walt Disney Home Entertainment. A theatrical gross is not the same as profit: the cited gross alone does not account for marketing, distribution, exhibitor shares, or other costs.
