Consumer Reports reported finding lead and cadmium in tested store-bought Lunchables and similar lunch kits. That finding applies to the samples tested—not every Lunchables product or lot—and the available government summary says none of the tested kits exceeded legal or regulatory limits. Detection and a regulatory violation are not the same thing.
What Consumer Reports reported
In an article published April 9, 2024, Consumer Reports described testing store-bought Lunchables and comparable lunch kits from other brands. Its reporting identified lead and cadmium among the concerns in the tested samples. A May 2024 digest from the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment summarized the investigation as covering 12 store-bought Lunchables products and similar kits. The digest is a secondary summary, not the original laboratory report. Read the DC government digest.
The accessible reporting does not establish product-by-product lead or cadmium concentrations. It therefore does not support a specific contaminant amount for an individual Lunchables product or a comparison with an exposure benchmark.
Did the tested kits exceed legal limits?
No, according to the DC government digest: none of the tested kits exceeded legal or regulatory limits. That summary can be true alongside the report of detected contaminants. A detection is not, by itself, proof that a product crossed a regulatory limit or that a regulator declared it unsafe.

What about sodium and other concerns?
The same DC digest summarized the tested retail kits’ sodium content as 460–740 milligrams per serving. Consumer Reports also raised concerns about sodium and phthalates. The sodium range is a summary of the tested kits, not a current value for every Lunchables variety; check the package label for the product and serving size you are considering.
Were school Lunchables tested for lead and cadmium?
Consumer Reports’ indexed account says it did not test school versions for contaminants. It compared their nutrition information and reported that the school versions had more sodium than retail versions. Consumer Reports’ indexed article also notes that Kraft Heinz removed Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program in November 2024, citing weak demand. That is separate from a recall of Lunchables sold in stores.

Kraft Heinz’s position
Kraft Heinz says Lunchables meet government safety standards, that lead is not an ingredient, and that low levels of lead can occur in common foods because it is present in soil and water. The company also says Lunchables have not been recalled and remain available in stores and online. These are the company’s statements, not an independent confirmation of Consumer Reports’ test results. Its FAQ says it expects to remove artificial dyes and flavors from all Lunchables by the end of 2027; this is a forward-looking company commitment. See Kraft Heinz’s Lunchables FAQ.

FDA guidance on lead in food
The FDA says no safe level of lead exposure is known. It also explains that finding lead in a food does not automatically mean people should avoid that food: assessment depends on the level measured, how much and how often it is consumed, a person’s age, and other exposure factors. This is general FDA guidance, not a product-specific safety determination about Lunchables. The FDA page does not say the agency found Lunchables unsafe or took action against them. How to use this information when choosing a lunch
- Check the current package label for sodium per serving and ingredients; formulations and serving sizes can differ.
- Keep the evidence categories separate: the reported contaminant findings concern tested samples, while the school-version comparison concerns nutrition information.
- Do not treat a detected contaminant as proof of a regulatory violation; the DC digest says the tested kits did not exceed legal or regulatory limits.
- If you are concerned about a child’s possible lead exposure, discuss the concern with a qualified clinician and follow official public-health guidance rather than drawing a medical conclusion from one food test.
