Did Boeing Sell China 500 Jets? What the 2026 Deal Announcements Say

A 500-plane Boeing package was reported under discussion, but the later announcement confirmed a 200-aircraft agreement. The models, airline allocations and delivery schedule were not specified in the cited reports.

No confirmed 500-aircraft sale is established by the cited announcements. Reuters reported that a package of about 500 planes was under discussion before the May 2026 Trump-Xi summit. Boeing later confirmed an agreement for 200 aircraft, while President Donald Trump said China had reserved the right to buy as many as 750. Those are three different claims—not three versions of a completed order.

What Boeing and China agreed to

On May 15, 2026, Boeing confirmed an agreement for 200 aircraft following the Trump-Xi summit, according to The Associated Press. AP reported that Boeing did not identify the aircraft types. Boeing said: “We had a very successful trip to China and accomplished our major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft.” AP did not name an individual speaker for the statement.

The announcement reopened a path to orders in a key market, but it did not establish the details needed to treat all 200 aircraft as firm airline orders. On May 28, Reuters reported Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg called the 200-aircraft commitment an “initial tranche.” Reuters said China would allocate aircraft to individual airlines, after which Boeing would negotiate firm orders with those airlines.

Where the 500- and 750-aircraft figures came from

Figure What the cited report says Status
About 500 aircraft Reuters reported this package was under discussion before the May 2026 summit. A reported negotiating figure, not a confirmed sale.
200 aircraft AP reported Boeing confirmed an agreement after the summit. The announced commitment; aircraft types were not specified in AP’s account.
As many as 750 aircraft AP attributed this potential purchase right to President Donald Trump. Not reported by AP as a firm 750-aircraft order.

The distinction matters: a package being discussed, an announced commitment, and firm orders placed by individual airlines are different stages. Reuters described the 200-aircraft commitment as an initial tranche, but that phrase alone does not prove that a larger package was signed.

What remains unspecified

The cited AP and Reuters reports do not establish the aircraft models, which airlines will receive them, prices, or delivery dates. Boeing’s China overview describes longstanding company ties and Chinese industry participation in production for the in-production 737, 767, 777, and 787 families. That background does not identify which models, if any, are included in this commitment.

At the reporting cutoff of October 8, 2026, the cited material does not establish a final 500-aircraft contract or subsequent firm airline orders. Boeing’s China press-release listing, as checked in the cited material, showed other 2026 announcements but no visible release confirming a 500-aircraft China order. That limited check is not proof that no later contract exists.

How to read the deal’s status

  1. Discussion: The roughly 500-plane package was reported as under discussion before the summit; it should not be called a sale.
  2. Announced commitment: Boeing confirmed an agreement for 200 aircraft after the summit, without publicly specified models in AP’s account.
  3. Firm airline orders: Reuters reported China would first allocate aircraft to airlines, then Boeing would negotiate firm orders with them. The cited reports do not supply those final orders or their terms.
