In October 2024, The New York Times reported that Bill Gates had privately said he donated about $50 million to Future Forward USA Action, a nonprofit supporting Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. The amount was attributed to three people briefed on the matter; it was not independently confirmed by a public donor filing. The reported recipient was not Harris’s authorized campaign committee.
What did the reports say?
The New York Times reported on October 22, 2024, that Gates had privately said he gave approximately $50 million to Future Forward USA Action. GeekWire and The Guardian relayed the report, attributing it to three people briefed on the matter. Forbes also described the reported contribution.
The distinction matters: the figure is a reported donation, not an amount established here by a publicly available filing naming Gates as the donor. Coverage at the time said Future Forward USA Action did not publicly disclose donor identities, limiting public confirmation of the attribution.
Who reportedly received the money?
The reported recipient was Future Forward USA Action, the nonprofit arm associated with the outside political group Future Forward. The reports did not say the money went directly to Harris’s authorized campaign committee. Future Forward and Future Forward USA Action should not be treated as interchangeable names for one legal entity.
#1 Best Overall
Was it a direct donation to Harris’s campaign?
No. The reporting named Future Forward USA Action as the recipient, rather than Harris for President, her authorized campaign committee. The Federal Election Commission’s candidate overview lists Harris for President as an authorized committee and distinguishes candidate committee activity from independent expenditures by others. The FEC explains that independent spending by outside groups is not money directly given to or spent by the candidate.
That difference helps explain why a reported contribution to an outside nonprofit should not be described as a direct campaign donation. Nor does the news report establish that the amount appeared as a contribution to Harris’s committee in FEC records.
Rank #2
Did Gates confirm the donation or endorse Harris?
The Guardian reported that Gates’s response to The New York Times did not explicitly address the reported donation or endorse Harris. He said: “I support candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to improving healthcare, reducing poverty and fighting climate change in the US and around the world. I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum, but this election is different, with unprecedented significance for Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world.”
Why might an outside group’s donors not appear in campaign filings?
Campaign finance records distinguish between a candidate’s authorized committee and outside organizations that spend independently. The recipient identified in the reports was a nonprofit associated with Future Forward, and contemporaneous coverage said that Future Forward USA Action did not publicly disclose donor identities. That means the news attribution could not be checked against a public donor list described in that coverage. It does not, by itself, establish what any particular filing contains.

When was this reported?
The coverage appeared October 22–23, 2024, before the November 5, 2024 presidential election. It is a historical report about that election, not a claim about a current contribution or campaign.
