The warning remains useful in two distinct situations: readers deciding whether an ebook listing looks trustworthy, and authors responding to suspected unauthorized copies. Amazon KDP’s current guidance says publishers must hold the rights to content they upload and provides a route for reporting suspected infringement.
What the 2011 warning described—and what it does not prove
Julie Bart’s HotHardware article, published April 6, 2011, described two alleged forms of ebook fraud: books assembled from automatically gathered web content, and digitized copies of legitimate books sold by someone who did not have the rights. It also raised concerns about fake reviews and marketplace screening. Read the 2011 article.
Those examples are historical reporting. They do not establish how often ebook scams occur today, whether a particular marketplace currently screens listings in the same way, or how effective its current controls are. A poorly edited or low-quality ebook is not necessarily a scam, and the sources available here do not provide a current prevalence figure or loss total.
How can I tell if an ebook is a scam?
No single listing clue proves fraud. Treat these as reasons to pause and verify the book, not as proof that its seller has acted unlawfully.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- Check who published it. Look for a named author or publisher and compare those details with the author’s or publisher’s official site when available.
- Look closely at the description and sample. A vague description, broken or inconsistent formatting, or text that appears unrelated to the stated book may indicate poor quality or misleading presentation. These signs alone do not establish copyright infringement.
- Read reviews cautiously. The 2011 article raised concerns about fake reviews, but the material here does not establish how prevalent review manipulation is now. Reviews can inform a decision; they cannot verify that a seller owns the rights.
- Be wary of claims that cannot be checked. If a listing appears to offer a known book under an unfamiliar author or publisher, compare the edition and publisher information with a trusted source before buying.
If the listing remains questionable, avoid relying on it as an authoritative or complete edition. Use the retailer’s own reporting process for a suspected policy violation; the current Amazon reporting route for suspected intellectual-property infringement is intended for rights holders and other people who believe their IP is being infringed.
What authors and publishers should verify before uploading
Amazon KDP’s current Intellectual Property Rights FAQ says an uploader must hold publishing rights. KDP may ask for documentation to confirm those rights before a book is made available, including when the material was previously published or created by someone else. KDP says content uploaded without rights can be rejected or removed and may negatively affect account status or royalties.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Before publishing, confirm that the rights cover the material and the intended use. If another person created or previously published content, retain the agreement or other records that establish your permission. Do not assume that being able to access a text or image online means you have the right to publish it.
Amazon’s Content Guidelines also put responsibility on authors, publishers, and selling partners to ensure content does not violate copyright or other rights. Amazon says it may reject or remove content that fails its guidelines and may investigate when notified of potential noncompliance. These policies describe platform action; they do not guarantee that every infringement will be prevented or that a report will produce a particular outcome.

What to do if someone copied your book
- Keep a clear record. Save the suspected listing details and copies of records showing your authorship or rights, such as publication records or relevant permissions. KDP may request documentation to confirm rights.
- Submit an infringement report. Use Amazon’s intellectual-property infringement reporting guidance if you believe an Amazon item infringes your IP. Amazon says it will investigate and take appropriate action.
- Report impersonation separately. If a website or social account is pretending to be Amazon publishing services, use KDP’s account-security guidance to report it. An impersonation report and an infringement report address different concerns.
- Follow up through the relevant channel. Keep your evidence and correspondence together and respond if Amazon asks for further information. The cited guidance does not promise a specific timeline or resolution.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 2011 article is a snapshot of concerns discussed at that time, while Amazon’s current KDP pages describe rights obligations and reporting procedures. Together, they support practical steps for checking suspicious listings and raising a concern, but they do not quantify current ebook-scam prevalence, establish a typical financial loss, or show that any marketplace process catches every unauthorized book. No consumer security product is established as necessary for this problem.
