In 2018, auctioneer Dan Dotson said a man who bought a storage unit for $500 found $7.5 million in a locked safe. The account was relayed to Dotson by a woman at an event and reported by Cox Media Group; the available reporting does not independently verify the discovery. The buyer was not named, and the facility was not identified.
What was reportedly found in the storage unit?
In a November 2018 account, Dotson said a woman approached him at an event and told him about a man her husband worked for. According to that retelling, the man bought a unit at an auction Dotson conducted in Southern California for $500. The unit reportedly contained a locked safe. One person tried and failed to open it; a second person allegedly succeeded and found $7.5 million in cash. Cox Media Group’s report attributes the story to Dotson rather than to the buyer or a firsthand account.
The reports do not name the buyer, specify the storage facility or city, or establish where the cash came from. A later retelling published in 2025 repeats the story but does not add independent confirmation.
What happened to the money?
A 2018 report by The Real Deal, citing the New York Post, said the previous owners offered $600,000 to get the money back. The buyer reportedly declined that offer, and the parties eventually agreed to a $1.2 million payment in exchange for returning the cash.

Does buying a storage unit mean you keep everything inside?
Not necessarily. Auction terms and applicable rules depend on the auction and location. The story itself does not establish what legal rules governed the alleged find or prove that a buyer automatically owns every item or sum of money discovered in a unit.
