What has been reported about the clause?
A May 2026 report by Wokingham.Today said Manchester United were understood to have a sell-on clause believed to be around 50% if Reading sold Savage before his deal expired in 2027. A syndicated Yahoo Sports report likewise described United as believed to hold a clause worth around 50% of a fee Reading received before that expiry.
Those reports attribute the figure to an understanding of the agreement; neither is an official disclosure of its terms. A later Wokingham.Today report published on 15 August 2026 said United retained a high sell-on clause, but did not state a percentage. It supports the reporting that a clause exists, not the precise 50% estimate.
What would a sell-on clause mean financially?
A sell-on clause gives a former club a share of proceeds if a player is transferred again, subject to the specific contract wording. If the reported estimate is accurate and Reading sell Savage within the stated period, Manchester United could be entitled to a payment. But the available reports do not establish how the share would be calculated.

In particular, they do not say whether “around 50%” refers to the gross transfer fee Reading receives, a profit after accounting for what Reading paid, or a defined portion that includes or excludes add-ons. Without that detail, it is not possible to calculate how much Reading would retain from a hypothetical sale. No fee or proceeds estimate should be treated as established.
What is known about Savage’s contract and transfer status?
The reports describe Savage’s Reading deal as expiring in 2027 and tie the reported clause to a sale before that expiry. Reading’s official under-21 released and retained list, published on 11 May 2026, discusses exercised contract options but does not identify Savage as a player whose option was activated. It therefore does not establish his individual contract status.

As of 8 October 2026, the available reporting here does not establish whether Savage has transferred or whether any clause has been triggered. The reports also do not confirm a completed offer or sale. His status and any eventual payment would need confirmation from the clubs or reliable current reporting.

The difference between a share of the whole fee and a share of profit can materially change the amount payable. Timing, add-ons and any other contractual conditions could also matter, but the published reports cited here do not spell them out. The reported 50% figure is therefore useful as an indication of the clause’s possible scale—not as a confirmed calculation of Manchester United’s entitlement or Reading’s net proceeds.
