Deta announced a $3.6 million seed round in October 2023 to develop Deta Space, a “personal cloud computer” built around an operating-system layer called Space OS. The idea was to give people a persistent computing environment they could reach from different devices, with apps and data organized around the user rather than separate platform silos. Deta’s public product materials now focus on Surf, a local-first notebook for internet research—not Space OS. That change makes the funding story both a bet on a different model of personal computing and a useful case study in how a startup’s product thesis can evolve.

What Deta raised and who participated

Berlin-based Deta announced the seed round on October 11, 2023. VentureBeat reported the amount as $3.6 million, led by Crane Venture Partners. Related coverage expressed the round as approximately €3.3 million; the dollar and euro figures are alternative reported expressions of the same financing, not two separate rounds. VentureBeat’s October 11, 2023 report covered the announcement, while Parsers reported the euro equivalent.

Secondary funding coverage lists System. One, Tomahawk.VC, Tiny.VC, Acequia Capital, Angel Invest, and NPHard among participants, alongside founders and early employees from companies including NGINX and Notion. The participant list is reported by CB Insights; the available reporting does not establish each participant’s contribution.

The announced purpose was to develop Deta Space. The cited coverage does not disclose a company valuation, cap table, revenue, or a detailed breakdown of how the proceeds would be allocated. It is therefore possible to describe the product-development aim, but not to claim a specific hiring, infrastructure, or expansion budget.

What Deta Space and Space OS were meant to be

Deta, Space, and Space OS

Deta was the company; Deta Space was its product concept; and Space OS was the operating-system layer Deta used to describe the environment. “Personal cloud computer” was Deta’s positioning for a cloud-hosted computing space that a person could access from different devices. The term “operating system” described the product vision, not an assertion that Space OS was equivalent to desktop systems such as Windows, macOS, or Linux.

The pitch went beyond renting a remote machine or opening a conventional virtual desktop in a browser. Deta wanted apps and personal data to coexist in a persistent environment, with the user able to move among applications and devices. The ambition was for that environment to act more like a personal computer than a collection of unrelated hosted services. This was a product thesis, not proof that Space delivered broad app compatibility, portability, or interoperability.

The problem Deta said it was addressing

Deta’s argument was that everyday computing is split among platforms: data is scattered across services, applications often work in silos, and platform owners control key parts of storage, identity, access, and integration. A personal cloud environment might reduce that fragmentation by making the user’s computing space—not an individual app or device—the organizing layer. Deta’s later account of its product philosophy describes related concerns about how people work with information online. Deta’s explanation of Surf’s motivation connects the newer product to earlier explorations including Space, Base, Drive, and Micros.

That vision also carried trade-offs. A cloud environment can make a workspace available across devices, but it depends on connectivity, account access, cloud infrastructure, and the provider’s continued operation. It also raises practical questions: Can users export their data in usable formats? Can third-party developers build without restrictive approval? Who controls identity, permissions, and storage? What happens to an app or its data if the service changes? The 2023 pitch raised the possibility of a more user-centered computing model; it did not establish how all of those questions would be answered.

What the 67,000-developer figure does—and does not—show

VentureBeat reported that more than 67,000 developers had signed up to build apps on Deta Space by the time of its October 2023 article. That is a reported signup count, not a measure of active developers, completed apps, paying users, retention, or enterprise adoption. The figure indicates interest in registering for the platform, but it cannot by itself demonstrate sustained usage or commercial traction. VentureBeat’s report is the source for the signup figure.

How Deta’s public product direction changed

Deta’s current public-facing product is Surf, which the company describes as an intelligent notebook for the internet. It is designed to collect web pages, images, files, notes, and media, and to help users explore material such as PDFs, YouTube videos, and web content. Deta presents Surf as open source and says it builds on earlier product explorations, including Space. Surf’s homepage and Deta’s account of its motivation describe the current direction.

  • Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring

The shift is meaningful: Space put forward a broadly accessible computer in the cloud, while Surf emphasizes a local-first research and knowledge workspace. Deta’s public pages no longer center Space OS; that is an observation about the company’s current presentation, not an explicit announcement that Space formally shut down or failed. Some of the original themes—personal control, a user-centered environment, and alternatives to fragmented platform workflows—remain, but in a narrower product form.

Where Surf keeps data, and where AI processing can happen

Deta’s FAQ says that Surf stores saved notes, notebooks, and resources directly on the user’s device. It also says web content runs in an isolated sandbox. These statements describe local storage and a web-content boundary; they do not mean every feature is processed only on the device.

For smart features, content a user places in context may be sent to language models hosted by Deta. Deta says users can instead provide their own API key or connect a local model. So “local-first” is not the same as “no data ever leaves this computer”: the AI provider and the material selected for a feature affect the privacy boundary. Before using sensitive material, check which model is selected and what content is being included. Surf’s FAQ describes storage and AI-provider options.

Surf uses Electron, according to the same FAQ. Deta acknowledges the trade-off that Electron includes the Chromium engine and can be resource-intensive. That may matter to users choosing a notebook for everyday research on a lower-powered computer.

Availability, maturity, and practical risks

As of August 18, 2026, Deta’s main site invites users to join an open beta, and its FAQ describes Surf as being in beta. A separate page still uses “closed alpha” and “open alpha” language. Those labels conflict, so the safest description is that Surf is an evolving product whose official pages do not present a consistent maturity label. Check the current signup and release information before relying on access. The main site, the FAQ, and the alpha page show the different wording.

The buy page presents a free “Free Spirit” path and an “Early Believer” option marked “Coming Soon,” without a settled public price shown there. Do not treat the latter as a confirmed purchasable plan or infer a subscription amount from it. Deta’s buy page is the relevant place to check for current plan details.

  • Back up important material. Deta’s terms put responsibility for backing up user content on the user.
  • Account for service continuity. The terms say services may become unavailable, including for download, installation, subscription, or use.
  • Expect an evolving feature set. Deta’s FAQ says features may be missing compared with earlier demonstrations.
  • Separate open-source claims from service guarantees. The homepage calls Surf open source, while the terms distinguish publicly released components from hosted or downloadable services; the label alone does not guarantee continuity of every service.

These qualifications matter for anyone considering Surf as a daily workspace: local storage can give users more direct control of files, but it does not eliminate the need for backups, nor does it guarantee ongoing access to every hosted capability. Deta’s terms identify the legal entity as Deta GmbH and state that the terms were last updated October 22, 2025. The terms set out the company’s service and backup language.

How the idea compares with other computing approaches

Deta Space sat between several established categories rather than fitting neatly into one. A conventional cloud PC or remote desktop prioritizes access to a familiar remote machine and broad software compatibility. Cloud storage and productivity suites prioritize synchronization and collaboration, but workflows may remain tied to separate vendor applications. Local-first knowledge tools prioritize local files and offline control, while usually offering a narrower scope than a full computing environment. AI research notebooks focus on analyzing sources, often through hosted services. These categories are useful reference points, not evidence that any named alternative currently matches Deta feature-for-feature.

Surf is best understood from Deta’s present description as a local-first notebook and web-research tool, not as a conventional cloud desktop or a demonstrated successor to a general-purpose operating system. Whether it is a good fit depends on the user’s priorities: local data handling and choice of AI provider may appeal to researchers, while users who need a mature synchronized team workspace, a conventional remote desktop, or settled long-term service terms may need a different category of product.
