A proposed Lion Sport purchase of a controlling interest was reported to have ended on 10 August 2026 after Lion Sport said it would not proceed. The sources available as of 8 October 2026 do not establish a replacement buyer, a completed sale or a reopened sale process.
Who owns Derby County now?
Derby County’s official ownership page lists Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd as the owner and David Clowes and Richard Tavernor as board members. The page identifies 2024/25 as the third season under Clowes ownership.
The club’s June 2026 Supporters’ Board notes said multiple interested parties were in conversation, but did not name them. The notes said Clowes Developments would decide when, to whom and how much of the club to sell, and that the club would not make a public announcement until the Independent Football Regulator (IFR), EFL and legal processes allowed. Those unnamed parties cannot be assumed to be connected to later reporting about Lion Sport or to remain interested.
What happened to the Lion Sport takeover?
On 10 August 2026, Hayters reported that Derby had confirmed a proposed Lion Sport purchase of a controlling interest would not proceed. The report reproduced the club’s statement that the process had been sanctioned by the IFR and EFL, but Lion Sport had told the club it no longer wished to continue. It also said Derby was off the market and would continue under Clowes Developments’ support. The directly accessed official club statement page was not available in the material reviewed, so these details should be understood as reported by Hayters.

Hayters also quoted Turki Alalshikh, identified in the report as the speaker: “After careful consideration, we don’t feel it is right to proceed at this time without the necessary preparation in place, but we will remain in conversation with the club and see what is possible in the future.” The report quoted him citing the season having started and insufficient time to prepare the team or club. That comment is not evidence that talks have since resumed.
As of 8 October 2026, Derby’s ownership page still lists Clowes Developments. The sources reviewed do not establish a new buyer, a new deal, a reopened sale process or a change in control.

Why regulatory clearance did not complete the sale
The EFL describes a takeover as an “acquisition of control” subject to both EFL and IFR requirements. The IFR’s Owners, Directors and Senior Executives (ODSE) regime began on 5 May 2026. Under the regime, a person must receive IFR approval before becoming an owner or taking a specified senior role, and clubs must notify the IFR of expected appointments.
The EFL’s guidance on owners, directors and senior executives describes assessment areas including honesty and integrity, financial soundness, financial resources and competence. It also says timings can vary depending on factors such as the number of investors, ownership structures, sources of investment, senior roles and other regulatory interactions.

Regulatory sanction is not the same as a buyer’s commitment to complete a purchase. In the Lion Sport case, the dated report says the proposal had been sanctioned by the EFL and IFR, but also reports that Lion Sport chose not to proceed and cites preparation and timing concerns. Approval therefore did not itself transfer control of the club.
How Clowes Developments acquired the club
On 1 July 2022, Clowes Developments completed the purchase of Derby County’s assets from the joint administrators, ending the club’s period in administration. The EFL statement, reproduced by Derby County, said the club remained under a registration embargo and could sign players only under an EFL-agreed business plan restricting transfer fees, wages and agents’ fees.

The club’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 explain that the club’s trade and assets were purchased on 1 July 2022, while Pride Park was acquired in a separate transaction. From summer 2022, the club and stadium were held in separate legal entities, both owned by Clowes Developments.
On 14 May 2025, the stadium company was renamed Derby County (The Rams) Stadium Limited and placed alongside the club under Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited, which remained wholly owned by Clowes Developments. The accounts say the restructuring was intended to address supporter concerns about separating the club and stadium, and state that it did not change ownership. This corporate structure is distinct from whether a new investor has acquired control.
