Turki Alalshikh’s proposed takeover of Derby County did not go ahead: BBC Sport reported on 10 August 2026 that he had withdrawn. The club said it would continue with support from Clowes Developments. Earlier Supporters’ Board notes described David Clowes as seeking majority investment while remaining open to other offers that met the club’s criteria—but the available sources do not confirm that Derby launched a fresh search after the withdrawal.
What happened to the proposed takeover?
On 10 August 2026, BBC Sport reported that Saudi official Turki Alalshikh had abandoned his proposed takeover of Derby County. The BBC said Alalshikh thanked the club’s representatives and suggested that the time required for ratification had led him to withdraw. That is the explanation reported by the BBC, not an independently established cause. BBC Sport’s report quoted the club saying it would continue under the “loyal, committed and unwavering support of Clowes Developments.”
Is David Clowes still looking for investment?
Earlier Derby County Supporters’ Board notes record Clowes as saying the club was looking for majority investment, while remaining open to potential offers if they met its criteria. The notes also say due diligence was necessary and that Clowes was not insisting on remaining chairman or retaining overall control. The Supporters’ Board notes predate Alalshikh’s withdrawal, so they describe the position at that earlier meeting—not necessarily Clowes’s position now.
The same notes say Derby would continue to operate according to its existing plans until new investment was in place. They also attribute to the club the statement that its ambition was promotion to the Premier League, with or without additional investment.

Has Derby announced a new search?
The sources available do not confirm that Clowes or Derby County began a new investment search after the August 2026 withdrawal. The earlier Supporters’ Board notes establish that majority investment had been sought at that time, but neither those notes nor the BBC’s account of Alalshikh’s withdrawal establishes what happened next. A renewed search should not be treated as confirmed without a later announcement from the club or Clowes.

Derby County’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 say that the club and Pride Park companies were placed under Derby County (The Rams) Holdings Limited on 14 May 2025. The accounts state that the holding company was wholly owned by Clowes Developments (UK) Limited and that the restructuring did not change ownership. Companies House filing history separately records a May 2025 change in persons with significant control. These records provide ownership context; they do not establish whether there have been later investment discussions.
