There is no attributable report or direct statement in the available sources confirming that Derby County warned John Textor that “it hasn’t worked at Watford.” The documented takeover story is different: Turki Alalshikh’s proposed Lion Sport purchase was withdrawn in August 2026, after regulatory approval, and Derby said the club was off the market.
Is the reported warning to John Textor confirmed?
No. The claim that Derby County sent Textor a takeover warning using the phrase “it hasn’t worked at Watford” is not supported by an attributable report or direct statement in the available sources. Supporter commentary about older speculation linking Textor with Derby does not establish that the club made this warning.
Without an originating report or a statement from a named Derby representative, the quotation should not be treated as something the club said. Nor does the available evidence establish that Textor made a takeover bid.
What takeover did Derby confirm?
The confirmed proposal involved Saudi official Turki Alalshikh and Lion Sport, not Textor. BBC Sport reported on 10 August 2026 that Alalshikh no longer wished to proceed with the proposed purchase of a controlling interest in Derby, despite the deal having received approval from the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator. Derby’s statement, quoted by the BBC, said: “For the benefit of any doubt, the club is now off the market.”
What did Derby say after the withdrawal?
In a message published by the club on 22 August 2026, chairman David Clowes said Derby had expected the sale to complete and was shocked when it did not. He said the club had no issues with the Independent Football Regulator or the EFL, describing both as supportive and professional. Clowes said Derby would move forward with support from Clowes Developments. David Clowes’s message on Derby County’s website

How should the two ownership stories be distinguished?
| Question | John Textor warning claim | Alalshikh / Lion Sport proposal |
|---|---|---|
| What is established? | The specific warning and its quoted wording are unverified in the available sources. | BBC Sport reported that Alalshikh withdrew from the proposed purchase in August 2026. |
| Did Derby confirm a bid? | No confirmation of a Textor bid appears in the available sources. | The proposed Lion Sport purchase and its withdrawal were reported by BBC Sport. |
| Regulatory status | Not established. | BBC Sport said the proposal had been sanctioned by the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator before the withdrawal. |
| Derby’s stated response | No attributable warning to Textor was found. | The club said it was off the market; Clowes later said it would continue with Clowes Developments’ support. |
What was the sporting impact?
Secondary reporting published on 7 October 2026 said the failed Alalshikh proposal disrupted Derby’s summer squad planning and that the club was in the Championship relegation zone. That report connected the disruption to the failed Lion Sport proposal, not to Textor or the unverified warning. The claim about league position is time-sensitive and should be checked against current standings before publication.
