Delta said it was replacing auxiliary power units (APUs) on more than 300 of its Airbus A320 aircraft. The work began in 2022 and was more than 90% complete when CBS News reported on it on September 25, 2025. Delta did not disclose the program’s cost, and the available reporting does not confirm when the replacements were finished. An APU is a separate aircraft system, not one of the engines that provides the jet’s main propulsion. CBS News
What Delta said it was replacing
The reported program covers APUs on more than 300 Delta A320 aircraft. CBS reported that the effort started in 2022 and had passed 90% completion by September 25, 2025. That is a dated progress report, not confirmation that the work is now complete. Delta did not comment on the cost. CBS News

An auxiliary power unit is distinct from an aircraft’s primary propulsion engines. The report identifies the components being replaced as APUs; it does not say Delta was replacing the main engines, nor does it establish that every cabin-fume report on an A320 came from an APU.

Aircraft cabin air can be affected by mechanical problems, but a reported odor alone does not identify its chemical source, concentration, health effect, or cause. The FAA says: “In rare instances, mechanical issues such as failures of an engine oil seal or recirculation fan bearings can cause fumes to enter the cabin.” That is general guidance about possible mechanisms, not a finding that either failure caused every reported event or that it explains Delta’s entire replacement program. The FAA’s cabin-air page says manufacturers must show that cabin air is free of harmful or hazardous concentrations of smoke, vapor, or toxic or noxious fumes in normal conditions and probable failure conditions. Airlines must file Service Difficulty Reports when smoke, vapor, or noxious odors enter the cockpit or cabin. The FAA investigates causes and says problems must be fixed before aircraft return to service. It also notes that it has no formal definition of a “fume event,” so the term is commonly used for reported incidents rather than a uniform diagnosis. Federal Aviation Administration
What the FAA’s cabin-air figures do—and do not—show
The FAA’s September 4, 2025 cabin-air guidance cites its December 2015 report, Aircraft Cabin Bleed Air Contaminants: A Review, as finding fewer than 33 cabin-air-quality events per million aircraft departures. This is a historical, overall rate; it is not a current estimate for Delta, the A320 fleet, or the APU replacement program. Federal Aviation Administration

The same FAA page says aircraft are designed to provide the equivalent of 0.55 pounds of fresh air per minute per occupant, and that most U.S. commercial airplanes use HEPA filters in recirculated airflow to remove 99.97% of particulate material. Those figures describe general cabin-air design and filtration context; they do not establish that portable filters address contaminants potentially associated with an APU. Why another Delta fume report is not proof about the A320 program
The FAA archive says Delta Flight 224, an Airbus A330 traveling from Boston toward Paris, returned safely to Boston on August 7, 2024, after the crew reported possible cabin fumes; the agency said it would investigate. That report concerns a different aircraft type and does not establish the cause of the event or a connection to Delta’s A320 APU replacements. Federal Aviation Administration
