Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031. The purchase is aimed at renewing Delta’s widebody fleet and adding capacity on high-demand Transatlantic and South American routes, but it will not affect the airline’s near-term fleet.
What Delta ordered
Announced January 13, 2026, the deal is Delta’s first direct order for the Boeing 787 and brings the aircraft type into its widebody fleet. The 30 airplanes in the firm order are committed purchases; the option for up to 30 more is not a firm order and depends on Delta choosing to exercise it. Delta’s announcement describes the order, while Boeing’s release says the deal brings Delta’s firm Boeing order book to 130 airplanes, including 100 previously ordered 737-10s.

When the aircraft are expected and how the purchase is financed
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2031, according to the purchase agreement Delta filed with the SEC. That timing means the order is a longer-term fleet plan, not an addition to Delta’s current or near-term aircraft availability. The filing says the aircraft will be powered by GE Aerospace GEnx engines and that the purchase falls within Delta’s previously announced capital expenditure and capacity targets. Delta also says it obtained long-term financing for a substantial portion of each aircraft’s purchase price. It does not disclose a total price or detailed financing terms in the cited filing. Delta’s SEC filing contains those disclosed terms.
Why Delta says it wants the 787-10
Delta says the aircraft will help it replace less efficient older widebodies over time and add capacity where it sees high demand, particularly on Transatlantic and South American flying. The company points to premium-cabin space and cargo capability as part of the aircraft’s role. It has not named particular routes for the new aircraft or specified which existing aircraft will be retired.

Delta says the 787-10 will deliver 25% better fuel efficiency per seat than the previous-generation widebody aircraft it expects to replace. That is Delta’s comparison: its announcement does not identify the comparison aircraft or publish an independent test methodology. It should not be read as a general, independently verified comparison with every widebody model. Delta’s 787-10 media kit presents the company’s performance and cabin claims.
What Delta has—and has not—said about the cabin
Delta says the planned cabin will include Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Main Cabin. The airline has also promoted Delta Sync Wi-Fi and in-flight entertainment. These are announced intentions, not a finalized aircraft layout: Delta has not published a seat count or cabin plan for the 787-10s in the cited materials. Travelers therefore cannot yet use this order to identify a confirmed seat map, exact configuration or route assignment.

What the order means for Delta’s fleet plans
The purchase adds a new widebody type to Delta’s fleet plans while complementing a substantial Boeing order book. Delta CFO Dan Janki said the order “adds diversity to our widebody order book, while creating cost-efficient scale across all widebody fleets.” CEO Ed Bastian framed the broader goal as improving the customer experience and replacing older, less efficient aircraft over the coming decade. Those statements describe Delta’s rationale; the announcements do not quantify future savings, identify retirements or confirm how many optional aircraft Delta will ultimately take.
