Independent comparisons reach the same practical conclusion: model-to-model testing is more useful than declaring a permanent brand winner. PCWorld’s comparison recommends evaluating the actual machines.
Know which product families you are comparing
Names can overlap, and 2026 shoppers may see current and discontinued branding together. HP’s consumer line is moving toward OmniBook, while older Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, and ProBook inventory can remain at retailers. Dell has been consolidating commercial products under Dell Pro. Record the full model number and generation before comparing prices.

Value depends on the complete configuration
Do not compare a $700 laptop with 8GB of memory, a dim panel, and a 256GB SSD against a $750 model with 16GB, a brighter display, and better service, then call the first one cheaper. Match these items:
- Processor family and generation, including sustained power limits.
- RAM amount, memory type, channel arrangement, and whether it is soldered.
- SSD capacity and interface.
- Screen resolution, brightness, refresh rate, color coverage, and panel type.
- GPU model and wattage for gaming systems.
- Operating-system edition, battery capacity, weight, and warranty service.
On the U.S. Dell store, prices observed in August 2026 included a Dell 16 starting at $899.99, Dell Pro 14 at $988.97, and Dell Pro Max 16 at $1,773.55; promotional configurations were also shown below displayed estimated values. These are date-specific, configuration-dependent signals, not permanent prices. Check Dell’s live listings. No comparable HP laptop price is established here, so compare HP’s current configuration directly on the purchase date.
Useful baseline for many Windows buyers
For a computer intended to last several years, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD are practical starting points. A lower specification can be reasonable for light web and document use, but budget for future storage and memory needs rather than assuming a later upgrade will be possible.
Everyday use and student buying
Students and home users should prioritize weight, real-world battery testing, webcam quality, keyboard comfort, display brightness, Wi-Fi, USB-C charging, repair cost, return period, and accidental-damage options. Manufacturer “up to” streaming figures are tested under specified conditions and are not universal usage results.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check whether the webcam, microphone, and display are acceptable at the base configuration. A cheaper laptop can become poor value if you must immediately add RAM, storage, a dock, or a monitor.
Business: Dell Pro versus EliteBook
Both vendors can support business fleets. The deciding factors are usually the existing fleet, reseller relationship, management tools, docking ecosystem, and service contract rather than a logo.
- Windows 11 Pro and Intel vPro availability.
- BIOS controls, remote management, imaging, and deployment tools.
- Dock compatibility and multi-monitor support.
- Security software and hardware features.
- On-site response, accidental-damage coverage, and keep-your-drive options.
- Replacement-part availability and lifecycle commitments.
Dell’s commercial materials emphasize managed Dell Pro systems, while HP positions Elite products with its Wolf Security ecosystem. These are vendor claims, not proof of universal superiority. Dell commercial information.
Gaming: Alienware, OMEN, and Victus
Alienware generally emphasizes larger, higher-end systems. OMEN provides a broader range of midrange and compact designs, while Victus is HP’s key budget-gaming alternative. PCWorld describes Alienware and OMEN as broadly competitive when configurations are comparable and notes Victus trade-offs such as more plastic construction and potentially weaker battery life or keyboard quality. Read the comparison.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Compare the GPU’s wattage, cooling, CPU pairing, RAM configuration, MUX or graphics-switching design, screen resolution, refresh rate, and response time. An RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 label alone does not predict gaming performance.
Gaming desktops
Compare graphics card, power-supply standard, cooling, motherboard, drive bays, and access to components. HP describes the OMEN 45L as having a tool-free chassis for component swaps without voiding the warranty; that statement applies to that family, not every OMEN, laptop, or all-in-one. Confirm the exact chassis before buying.
Desktops, all-in-ones, and workstations
Home and office desktops
Choose a tower when you want replaceable components and multiple displays. An all-in-one saves space but usually offers fewer upgrade paths; inspect memory, storage, and port access before purchase.
Professional workstations
Precision and ZBook/Z systems can justify their cost through ISV certification, professional GPU drivers, ECC memory options, larger memory limits, and enterprise support. A consumer gaming PC may be faster in a raw benchmark yet unsuitable for certified CAD, simulation, or engineering software.
Build quality, displays, performance, and battery
Independent testing finds broadly similar build quality and user experience in many comparable Dell and HP classes, alongside weaknesses in particular models and price tiers. RTINGS’ HP coverage and Dell coverage illustrate why the exact review matters.
Inspect the physical design
- Chassis material, keyboard-deck flex, hinge rigidity, lid strength, and port durability.
- Keyboard travel, touchpad accuracy, webcam quality, and fan noise.
- Matte versus glossy finish and external-monitor support.
Evaluate the display independently
Record brightness in nits, resolution, color coverage and accuracy, refresh rate, touch support, OLED versus LCD technology, scaling, and any measured flicker. A premium family can have a poor base panel.
Interpret performance and battery claims correctly
For performance, identify the exact CPU, GPU power limit, cooling design, memory channels, SSD, and whether testing was plugged in or on battery. For battery life, require the processor, panel, battery capacity, brightness, workload, and test method. Never compare two manufacturers’ “up to” figures as though they used the same test.
Repairability and upgrade planning
Before buying, check soldered versus replaceable RAM, M.2 access, Wi-Fi-card replacement, battery procedure, screw types, service manuals, proprietary connectors, and whether opening the chassis affects coverage. RTINGS flags proprietary parts and soldered memory or storage on some Dell laptops; that is a model-specific warning, not a verdict on every Dell system.

- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
For desktops, verify standard power supplies, motherboard dimensions, drive bays, and graphics-card clearance. Do not assume an all-in-one or compact gaming system has tower-like expansion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty, support, and total ownership cost
Compare the purchased plan, not the brand reputation:
- Warranty length and mail-in versus on-site service.
- Next-business-day availability, repair turnaround, and geographic limits.
- Accidental damage, battery coverage, international service, and keep-your-drive options.
- Cost of a dock, charger, RAM or SSD upgrade, and likely repairs.
HP’s warranty terms say response times, including next-business-day service where available, are based on commercially reasonable efforts rather than an absolute guarantee. Read HP’s warranty terms. For refurbished or open-box HP systems, use the warranty-status checker.
RTINGS praises Dell’s documentation and diagnostic tools but reports criticism of unclear paid-warranty upsells. Treat that as reported feedback, and read the exact service offer before checkout.

Dell is worth considering when you need Linux: selected professional configurations list Ubuntu options, including at least one Dell Pro Max 16 configuration shown with Windows 11 Pro, no operating system, or Ubuntu. Availability is model- and configuration-specific. Verify the exact Ubuntu release, Wi-Fi chipset, fingerprint reader, suspend/resume, graphics drivers, webcam, dock, and firmware-update support before purchase. HP compatibility is likewise model-specific; neither brand guarantees identical Linux behavior across its catalog.
A 10-point worksheet for comparing two exact models
- Write the full model number, generation, retailer, and current price.

- Add the cost of essential accessories and likely upgrades, then score workload fit, performance, display, portability, ergonomics, upgradeability, connectivity, support, total cost, and availability from 1 to 5.
Recommendations by buyer
- Student or everyday user: choose the lighter model with the better display, webcam, keyboard, battery evidence, and at least 16GB/512GB when affordable.
- Remote worker: prioritize webcam, microphone, keyboard, ports, docking, and support over a marginal CPU upgrade.
- Business fleet: compare Dell Pro and EliteBook service contracts, management, security, docking, and lifecycle terms.
- Creator: compare color-accurate displays, sustained CPU/GPU power, memory, storage, and external-monitor support.
- Gamer: match Alienware, OMEN, or Victus by GPU wattage, cooling, display, and price—not GPU name alone.
- Workstation user: compare Precision or Pro Max with ZBook/Z certification, ECC, professional drivers, memory limits, and application support.
- Linux user: select only a configuration with verified hardware and Ubuntu support.
- Repairability-focused buyer: favor the exact machine with replaceable memory/storage, accessible service documentation, and standard desktop components.
When neither Dell nor HP is right
Consider a Lenovo ThinkPad for business keyboards and enterprise familiarity, ASUS for broader gaming and experimental designs, Acer for competitive budget and midrange value, Apple for macOS and ecosystem integration, or a custom desktop builder for maximum component choice and upgradeability. RTINGS’ comparisons identify Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer as meaningful alternatives in different laptop segments. Review the alternatives in context.
Final buying decision
- Define the workload and portability requirement.
- Compare equivalent processor, memory, storage, display, and GPU configurations.
- Verify repairability, ports, battery evidence, and known model issues.
- Price the warranty, dock, upgrades, and accessories.
- Confirm the return window and current availability.
Buy the specific Dell or HP machine with the best combination of performance, ergonomics, service, and price. The better brand is the one that delivers that combination for your use—not the one with the more familiar logo.
