The usual arrangement is not Walmart buying Amazon inventory. A third-party merchant lists and sells the product on Walmart.com, stores stock in Amazon’s network, and sends the Walmart order to Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF). Amazon picks, packs and ships it—normally in neutral packaging—while Walmart remains the marketplace where the purchase occurred.
The three companies behind one “Walmart” order
It helps to separate roles that are easy to confuse:
- Marketplace: Walmart.com displays the listing, takes the order and payment, and applies its marketplace rules.
- Third-party seller: The merchant controls the listing, price and inventory. It is generally the commercial counterparty for the product.
- Fulfillment provider: Amazon MCF, Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), ShipBob or another logistics company stores, picks and ships the item.
Walmart identifies Marketplace products with labels such as “Sold by” and “Sold and shipped by.” Its customer guidance also explains that Walmart-fulfilled inventory is stored at Walmart facilities, where Walmart picks and packs it. A Walmart listing therefore does not prove that Walmart—or Amazon—owns the goods. Walmart’s Marketplace guidance explains how to identify the seller and obtain help.
How an Amazon-fulfilled Walmart order moves
- The merchant lists a product on Walmart Marketplace.
- The merchant holds inventory in Amazon’s fulfillment network, using MCF alongside or separately from Fulfillment by Amazon.
- A customer buys on Walmart.com.
- The order is entered manually in Amazon Seller Central or routed automatically through an integration provider.
- Amazon selects stock, picks and packs it, and ships with tracking. Amazon says Walmart orders can use carrier choices and unbranded packaging.
Amazon’s September 18, 2025 announcement names WebBee, Pipe17, Rithum, Goflow and Lingxing among integration providers. Eligibility, inventory setup, handling-time settings and marketplace policies determine whether a particular seller can use the arrangement; it is not a delivery option a shopper chooses at checkout. Amazon’s announcement describes the supported workflow and packaging.

Why Amazon would fulfill a rival’s orders
Amazon is selling logistics as a service, not just using logistics to sell products on Amazon.com. MCF lets it earn storage, handling, transportation and related fees when the sale happens on Walmart, Shopify, eBay, SHEIN, Temu, TikTok Shop or a merchant’s own site.
That strategy can improve utilization of warehouses and delivery capacity, make sellers more dependent on Amazon’s software and inventory network, and position Amazon against UPS, FedEx, DHL, ShipBob and other third-party logistics providers. Amazon presents MCF as part of its wider Supply Chain by Amazon initiative. Amazon’s supply-chain overview also reports, as Amazon-reported averages, a 19% reduction in out-of-stock rates and a 12% improvement in inventory turnover for merchants using FBA and MCF together; those are not independent controlled-study results.
GeekWire reported that Amazon’s 2024 third-party seller-services revenue was $156 billion, a category that includes commissions, fulfillment, shipping and related services, compared with $638 billion in total Amazon revenue. Those figures are attributed to GeekWire’s reporting and Amazon disclosures, not an independent recalculation. GeekWire’s report provides the context.
Why Walmart permits the arrangement
Walmart Marketplace can attract more merchants if they do not have to build a warehouse network before listing products. Outsourced fulfillment can improve availability and delivery performance while Walmart competes for marketplace sales, advertising and customer relationships.

Its Multichannel Solutions (MCS) program lets sellers place inventory in Walmart fulfillment centers and use it for orders from Amazon, eBay, Temu, TikTok, their own websites and other channels. Sellers must establish a WFS account and inventory position first. In effect, Amazon can fulfill Walmart orders while Walmart can fulfill Amazon orders. Walmart’s MCS overview and developer documentation describe the supported channels and requirements.

What a Walmart shopper actually sees
Seller and tracking
The order appears in the Walmart account, with the Marketplace seller shown on the listing or order details. Tracking is delivered through the Walmart order experience, although the carrier or scan events may reveal that Amazon’s network handled the parcel.
Packaging
MCF orders for Walmart are intended to use unbranded boxes or mailers, consistent with Walmart’s prohibition on Amazon-branded delivery boxes. Neutral packaging does not make Amazon operationally invisible: carrier data, tracking language, delivery timing or a label can still provide clues. Amazon specifies the unbranded-packaging and carrier features.
Late, damaged or incorrect orders
The seller remains responsible for the listing, product support and marketplace obligations even when a fulfillment provider caused the delay. Start with the Walmart order page and the Marketplace seller’s contact option. Walmart says its Marketplace Promise may apply when delivery or return problems are not resolved, subject to the applicable terms. Walmart’s customer-help page explains seller contact, returns and the Promise.
Returns and warranties
A return may go through Walmart’s online process, to a Walmart store when the item qualifies, or directly to a fulfillment or returns facility. Walmart notes that some Marketplace products can be returned to a store within 30 days, but treatment varies by seller, product and policy. Fulfillment location does not by itself change the manufacturer warranty; keep the seller and brand documentation for support.

A headline fulfillment rate is only one part of the cost. A realistic per-order model includes:

- Walmart referral and other marketplace fees.
- Pick-and-pack, shipping, storage and fuel or peak surcharges.
- Inbound freight and inventory removal.
- Returns, inspection, restocking and disposal.
- Order-management or integration software.
- Advertising, promotions and customer-service labor.
For example, comparing a $4.95 published fulfillment charge with a competitor’s $5.25 charge proves little if the first option has higher storage, returns or integration costs. Amazon’s 2026 MCF rate cards vary by size, weight, speed, zone, storage and account terms; use the live calculator or current rate card rather than a single “MCF price.” 2026 MCF rate card and Amazon’s rate-card page are the relevant references.
Walmart’s published pricing signals
Walmart’s standard WFS page lists no setup, monthly or hidden fees and gives examples of $3.45 for items weighing 1 pound or less, $4.95 for 2-pound items, $5.45 for 3-pound items, and $5.75 plus $0.40 for each pound over 4 pounds for items from 4 to 20 pounds. Applicable items use dimensional weight (volume divided by 139), with 0.25 pound added for packaging before rounding. Storage is generally listed at $0.75 per cubic foot per month from January through September, with peak-season additions and higher charges for inventory stored more than 12 months. These are WFS figures, not automatic MCS or MCF prices. Walmart’s pricing page lists the figures.

Items over 150 pounds in unit or dimensional weight are not eligible under the stated rules. Sellers need a billing method for fulfillment, storage and returns; Walmart’s documentation says the relevant setup currently accepts U.S.-based ACH payments. Shipping speeds can be affected by peak periods and sales events. Walmart’s MCS fee guide contains the limits and billing details.
As of August 18, 2026, Walmart advertised 20% off MCS fulfillment fees for first-time users for 90 days, with the offer listed through January 31, 2027, subject to terms. Walmart also claims MCS costs 15% less on average than competitors and reports a 97% on-time delivery rate based on its own data from August 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026. Both are Walmart claims, not independent market-wide measurements. Walmart’s program page gives the promotion and statistics.

Shared stock can create shared failures
One pool can reduce duplicated safety stock, but a warehouse outage, incorrect SKU mapping or fulfillment suspension can interrupt several storefronts at once. A channel that sells faster than forecast can consume stock reserved for another channel, producing oversells and cancellations.

Marketplace promises still apply
Outsourcing the parcel does not outsource every performance obligation. Sellers must verify handling-time settings, valid tracking, carrier eligibility, cancellation procedures and packaging rules. Amazon Logistics may be available unless the seller’s configuration or marketplace requirements restrict carrier choices. Walmart’s MCS documentation specifically warns that advertised shipping speeds are not guaranteed in every peak or exceptional circumstance.
Returns require their own design
Before launch, decide whether returns go to Walmart facilities, Amazon facilities, the seller or a specialist processor; who authorizes refunds; how quickly stock is inspected; and whether returned units are resold, repaired or disposed of. A Walmart customer returning an eligible item to a store introduces a different physical path from an Amazon-processed return.
Concentration risk
A seller can become dependent on Amazon inventory, Amazon transportation, Walmart demand, Walmart rules and one integration provider simultaneously. Maintain exportable inventory data, a second routing option, stock-removal procedures and a contingency carrier or 3PL before a disruption occurs.

ShipBob’s services are described at shipbob.com, while Shopify’s fulfillment options are outlined at Shopify’s fulfillment page. Neither should be compared with MCF or MCS on a pick-and-pack number alone.
What this says about online retail
The notable change is not that Amazon can put a Walmart order in a box. It is that the storefront and the physical supply chain are becoming separate layers. Walmart and Amazon still compete for shoppers, sellers, advertising and payments, while selling infrastructure to merchants that may list on both sites.
That separation can lower the barrier for a small brand to reach multiple audiences. It can also strengthen the largest platforms: the seller may diversify storefronts while concentrating inventory, software and delivery with one or two infrastructure providers. Neutral packaging hides the rivalry from the doorstep, but it does not remove the strategic dependence underneath.
