DeepSeek is a Chinese AI model developer whose low-cost, open-weight models triggered a historic selloff in AI stocks on January 27, 2025. As of August 16, 2026, the story is no longer just about that one-day Nvidia shock. DeepSeek’s current official API lineup is the V4 family, its prices remain aggressively low, and the bigger question is whether more efficient AI will reduce demand for expensive infrastructure—or make AI cheap enough to use everywhere.
The short version
- DeepSeek is a Chinese AI research company and model developer, associated with founder Liang Wenfeng and the quantitative-investment firm High-Flyer. The precise corporate and financing details reported about that relationship should not be confused with a complete, independently verified company financial history.
- Its DeepSeek-R1 reasoning model, released on January 20, 2025, challenged assumptions about how much computing power and capital are necessary to build competitive AI.
- On January 27, 2025, Nvidia lost approximately $593 billion in market value in one trading session, according to Reuters reporting. That was a repricing of investor expectations—not proof that Nvidia’s business had permanently collapsed.
- DeepSeek’s current official API models are
deepseek-v4-flashanddeepseek-v4-pro. Both are advertised with a one-million-token context window, thinking and non-thinking modes, tool calls, JSON output, and OpenAI-style and Anthropic-style API compatibility. - DeepSeek may be attractive for inexpensive experimentation, coding, mathematics, reasoning, and self-hosted research. It may be a poor fit for sensitive data, strict data-residency requirements, mature enterprise contracting, or workloads needing predictable long-term support.
What is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial-intelligence research company that develops large language models and makes them available through a consumer chatbot, an application-programming interface, and downloadable model checkpoints. Those are different products:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- DeepSeek Chat: a hosted website and mobile-chat experience for individual users.
- DeepSeek API: a paid developer service for integrating models into applications and workflows.
- Open-weight models: downloadable checkpoints that organizations can run, modify, or build around subject to the applicable license.
Background coverage from the Congressional Research Service describes DeepSeek’s connection to High-Flyer and Liang Wenfeng. Those details help explain the company’s origins, but they do not establish that DeepSeek is publicly traded. There is no ordinary public-market “DeepSeek stock” for investors to buy directly.

DeepSeek attracted attention before R1. DeepSeek-V2 appeared in 2024, followed by the V3 technical report and model release in December 2024. V3 was a 671-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model. In January 2025, DeepSeek released R1 and R1-Zero, models focused on reasoning.
#1 Best Overall
The R1 research paper also described six distilled models ranging from 1.5 billion to 70 billion parameters. Distillation transfers useful behavior from a larger model into a smaller one, making some applications easier and cheaper to run.

Why R1 rattled AI stocks
The market’s reasoning was straightforward:
- DeepSeek released a free assistant and open-weight models.
- R1 appeared to offer strong reasoning performance at far lower reported usage prices than leading proprietary reasoning systems.
- Investors questioned whether AI companies would need as many expensive GPUs, servers, and data centers as previously expected.
- Nvidia, chip suppliers, server manufacturers, utilities, and data-center companies sold off.
The Associated Press described Nvidia shares falling roughly 17% during that episode. The approximately $593 billion market-value loss reported by Reuters represented the value investors assigned to the company’s shares at that moment; it was not cash paid by DeepSeek and did not prove that Nvidia’s customers had stopped buying hardware.
The key distinction is between efficiency per task and total demand. If each AI response requires less compute, infrastructure demand per query can fall. But lower prices can also encourage more people and businesses to use AI for coding, search, agents, automation, and document analysis. The total effect remains a business question, not a settled conclusion from one model release.

Mixture of experts
A mixture-of-experts model can contain a very large number of total parameters while activating only a fraction for each token. That can reduce the computation needed for an individual response compared with activating the entire model every time. Parameter count alone therefore does not tell you a model’s running cost.
Reasoning-focused post-training
R1 emphasized reinforcement learning and reasoning behavior. In plain terms, the training process encouraged the model to spend more effort on certain problems before producing an answer. R1-Zero was an especially notable research experiment, while R1 was presented as a more usable system.
Rank #2
Distillation and efficient compute
DeepSeek’s releases showed how reasoning behavior could be transferred into smaller models and how model architecture and training choices could make limited computing resources go further. That matters because the economics of AI depend not only on who has the largest data center, but also on how much useful output can be produced by each unit of hardware.
DeepSeek’s V3 report cited less than $5.6 million for a particular training run using Nvidia H800 GPUs. That is not the total cost of creating DeepSeek or a frontier model. It excludes, or may not capture, research, failed experiments, data, staff, hardware acquisition, earlier development, and broader infrastructure. The Congressional Research Service specifically cautions against treating the figure as a complete budget.
What is current: the V4 family
DeepSeek’s April 24, 2026 V4 Preview announcement lists:
| Model | Total parameters | Active parameters | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
deepseek-v4-flash |
284 billion | 13 billion | 1 million tokens |
deepseek-v4-pro |
1.6 trillion | 49 billion | 1 million tokens |
DeepSeek says both models support thinking and non-thinking modes, tool calls, JSON output, and compatibility with OpenAI-style and Anthropic-style APIs. Those are product capabilities, not a universal independent ranking. A model can be excellent at mathematics but less reliable at a company’s specific workflow, slower under load, or weaker at tool use and safety controls.
Official API pricing
The official pricing page lists the following prices in U.S. dollars per one million tokens:
Rank #3
| Model | Cache-hit input | Cache-miss input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
deepseek-v4-flash |
$0.0028 | $0.14 | $0.28 |
deepseek-v4-pro |
$0.003625 | $0.435 | $0.87 |
These are API prices, not the cost of running the models yourself. Cache-hit pricing applies only when a workload benefits from prompt-prefix caching. Your total bill can also include application engineering, storage, monitoring, networking, moderation, retries, and integration work. Prices, limits, availability, and account requirements can change; check the official pricing page before committing to a production budget.
Update old applications
The legacy aliases deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner were scheduled for retirement on July 24, 2026, at 15:59 UTC. New code should use the current identifiers and should not assume an old application will continue working.

DeepSeek documents OpenAI Chat Completions compatibility and an API base URL of https://api.deepseek.com. Compatibility does not guarantee identical output, latency, limits, tool behavior, or safety policies.
Does DeepSeek threaten Nvidia?
There are three plausible outcomes.
| Scenario | What it would mean |
|---|---|
| Infrastructure bear case | More efficient models need fewer active parameters or fewer inference operations, reducing hardware required for some workloads and increasing price competition among cloud providers. |
| Infrastructure bull case | Cheaper intelligence expands usage so sharply that total demand for compute, networking, memory, and data centers rises. |
| Mixed case | Efficiency improves, but demand also grows. The value shifts toward efficient inference, networking, memory, accelerators, cloud distribution, developer ecosystems, proprietary data, and applications. |
The most defensible conclusion is that DeepSeek weakened the assumption that only the biggest U.S. labs, with enormous infrastructure budgets, could compete. It did not prove that Nvidia, data centers, or AI spending had become obsolete. For investors, the practical lesson is to distinguish a short-term valuation shock from durable changes in revenue, margins, customer orders, and capital spending.
“Open source” needs qualification
DeepSeek’s use of open-weight releases is important, but “open source” does not automatically mean fully transparent, unrestricted, or cost-free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRank #4
- Open weights means model parameters are available for download.
- Source availability does not necessarily mean the complete training data, infrastructure, experiments, or development history are public.
- Licenses vary. Check commercial-use, redistribution, attribution, and derivative-model terms for the exact checkpoint.
- Hosted access is different from self-hosting. Using the website or API does not give you control of the model files or the processing environment.
The V4 announcement provides links to weights and a technical report. Before deploying a checkpoint commercially, read its actual license and verify the model version, supported runtime, quantization, and hardware requirements.
Hosted API, third-party host, or self-hosting?
| Option | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Official DeepSeek API | Low operational burden, current models, published token pricing | Prompts leave your environment; pricing, policy, and availability can change |
| Third-party host | May offer regional infrastructure, observability, or consolidated billing | Adds another party; prices, limits, model versions, and data policies differ |
| Self-hosted weights | More control over data and deployment | Large hardware, engineering, security, monitoring, and maintenance burden |
| Proprietary alternative | May offer stronger enterprise controls and support | Usually less control over weights and a different cost structure |
Self-hosting does not automatically make a deployment safe. Model files can be untrusted, servers can be exposed, logs can contain sensitive prompts, and access controls or isolation can be inadequate. It also may not be practical to run V4-Pro at useful speed without substantial GPU capacity.
Privacy, security, and censorship considerations
Assess separately:
- Information sent to the official chatbot.
- Information sent to the official API.
- Information sent through a third-party host.
- Information processed by a self-hosted checkpoint.
For personal use, do not paste passwords, payment details, medical records, confidential work, private customer information, or proprietary source code into a hosted AI service unless the provider’s current terms and your organization’s policy allow it. The retrieved DeepSeek User Agreement is dated October 23, 2023; users should check for a newer agreement and current privacy documentation.
Model-output risks apply regardless of provider: hallucinated facts, coding errors, prompt injection, insecure generated code, unreliable tool calls, and unexpected refusals. DeepSeek’s Chinese origin can also matter for organizations evaluating geopolitical exposure, censorship behavior, legal obligations, and vendor concentration. Open weights may permit more local control, but they do not eliminate legal restrictions, safety behavior, or the need for review.

Export controls and national-security claims
Three questions should be kept separate: what chips DeepSeek used, whether restricted chips were obtained through intermediaries, and whether its models or infrastructure support Chinese military or intelligence activity.
Best Value
The Congressional Research Service discusses reports and allegations involving H800s, H100s, intermediaries, and possible export-control evasion. In 2026, Reuters reported that U.S. officials claimed DeepSeek had trained a newer model on Nvidia Blackwell chips despite restrictions. That is an attributed allegation, not a judicially established fact.
Reuters also reported on June 16, 2026, that the United States had, at that time, held off placing DeepSeek on a broader trade blacklist. Export controls and sanctions can change quickly, so that report should not be treated as a permanent status.
How good are DeepSeek’s models?
There is no single answer. Evaluate the exact model and workload across general conversation, mathematics, coding, long-context analysis, tool use, Chinese and English writing, latency, reliability, safety, and cost.
DeepSeek’s own release materials make performance claims, including claims about matching leading closed models. Those are release claims, not a universal independently verified verdict. Benchmark results can vary with prompts, inference settings, hidden test sets, contamination, and whether a reasoning trace is counted or withheld. A short pilot using your real documents and tools is more informative than a leaderboard number alone.
When might DeepSeek be a good fit?
- You want very low API token prices.
- You need a long context window.
- You want to research or privately deploy an open-weight model.
- Your workload values coding, mathematics, or reasoning performance.
- You can complete a privacy, legal, and geopolitical review.
- You can tolerate changes in model policy, availability, or pricing.
When might it be a poor fit?
- Sensitive or regulated data cannot be sent to the vendor’s hosted infrastructure.
- You need guaranteed regional data residency, indemnification, audit documentation, or a specific compliance framework.
- You require mature enterprise support, predictable uptime, or a stable long-term roadmap.
- Your team cannot operate large models locally.
- Your application needs consistently unrestricted answers on politically sensitive subjects.
- You have not validated latency, tool calling, reliability, and error handling in production-like conditions.
What the DeepSeek story means for personal investors
DeepSeek is best understood as a competitive and economic signal, not a simple buy-or-sell indicator. It demonstrated that model efficiency and open-weight distribution can move markets. But stock prices ultimately depend on earnings, margins, customer demand, competition, regulation, and expectations.
For an investor researching AI exposure, ask:
- Is the company selling scarce infrastructure, or competing in a market where model prices may fall rapidly?
- Would cheaper models increase the customer’s total AI usage?
- Does the business depend on high inference margins?
- Can its hardware, software, cloud, or data advantage survive falling model prices?
- How exposed is it to export controls, supply-chain restrictions, or one large customer?
- Are you reacting to a headline, or to a measurable change in revenue and guidance?
A single trading session can reveal how crowded a trade is, but it cannot by itself forecast the next decade of AI infrastructure demand.
