For U.S. holiday shopping—especially online—a credit card is generally the safer choice if an order is duplicated, never arrives, or turns out to be wrong or damaged. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends using a credit card for online purchases when possible because certain purchase problems can be disputed as billing errors. Both card types have protections against unauthorized use, but debit-card liability can rise if you wait to report a lost card, and debit purchases draw directly from your bank account.
Credit card vs. debit card: what the protections cover
The key distinction is the type of problem. An unauthorized charge is a transaction you did not make or approve. A purchase dispute is a charge you recognize, but something went wrong with the transaction—for example, you were billed twice or the item never arrived. Those situations follow different rules.

This distinction matters during holiday shopping because the phrase “fraud” can describe very different events. If someone takes your card information and makes a purchase you never authorized, report an unauthorized charge. If you placed an order but the seller charged you twice, did not send it, or sent a wrong or damaged item, explain that it is a problem with a purchase. Tell the issuer what happened as clearly as you can; do not assume every problem with an order uses the same process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Situation | Credit card | Debit card |
|---|---|---|
| Someone uses a lost or stolen card without authorization | Federal law generally limits your liability for unauthorized charges to $50. The FTC says you are not responsible for unauthorized charges if you report the lost card before it is used. | Potential liability depends in part on when you report the loss. The FTC describes limits of up to $50 when you report within two business days after learning of the loss, up to $500 when you report later but within 60 calendar days after the statement is sent, and potentially all money taken after that period. |
| You are charged twice, an order does not arrive, or the item is wrong or damaged | The FTC says you can dispute certain credit-card billing errors, including duplicate billing, non-delivery, and goods that are wrong or damaged. A dispute is a process, not a guaranteed refund. | Debit-card protections differ from credit-card billing-error protections. The FTC cautions that you may not be able to get a refund for non-delivery or the wrong item through the same protections. Contact your card issuer promptly. |
| How quickly to act | For a credit-card billing error, the FTC says to send written notice within 60 days of the statement containing the error. | For a lost or stolen card, reporting time can affect potential liability. For an unauthorized electronic transfer, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate after you notify it. |
| Where the money comes from | A purchase is a credit transaction; it does not directly withdraw the purchase amount from your deposit account. | A purchase draws from the linked deposit account. While an error is being investigated, access to those account funds may be affected; the investigation period is not a promise about how long any particular funds will be unavailable. |
These are U.S. federal protections, not a guarantee that a particular dispute will succeed. Issuer procedures, card agreements, optional benefits, and rules in other countries can differ.

Why a credit card is usually safer for an online holiday order
Online shopping can go wrong even when the cardholder did nothing improper: a seller may bill the order twice, fail to deliver it, or send something materially different from what was agreed. The FTC identifies these as reasons to dispute a credit-card charge. Its 2023 guidance puts the practical recommendation plainly: “Use a credit card for online purchases, if possible.”
A debit card also has important protections, particularly when someone makes an unauthorized transfer. But its purchase-dispute protections are not identical to credit-card billing-error protections. A debit purchase also draws on your bank balance, so a mistaken or unauthorized withdrawal can affect money you may need for other expenses while the issue is being addressed. That difference makes a credit card the clearer choice when your main concern is what happens if an online purchase goes wrong.
That is a practical distinction, not a claim that every credit-card dispute is easy or successful. A credit card is not immune from fraud, and a chargeback or billing-error report does not guarantee that the issuer will reverse a charge. You may need to explain the issue, provide records, and follow the issuer’s process. The value of choosing credit is that the FTC identifies a route to dispute certain purchase problems, not that it promises a particular outcome.
Debit is not automatically an unsafe choice, either. It can be used for holiday purchases, but recognize that an erroneous debit transaction affects a deposit account rather than a credit line. If your checking account balance is needed for bills or other near-term costs, a disputed withdrawal may be more disruptive while it is being resolved. The CFPB’s general 10-business-day investigation period is not a guarantee that any particular funds will be unavailable for exactly that long; it is a general period for a bank or credit union to investigate an unauthorized electronic transfer after notification.
Nor does this comparison rank cards by rewards, interest rates, purchase insurance, or other optional features. Issuers and card agreements can offer different extras and different procedures. The comparison here is about the federal protections described by the FTC and CFPB, and the practical difference between a credit purchase dispute and an unauthorized transfer from a deposit account.

How to choose a payment method for a holiday purchase
Choose a credit card when purchase recourse matters most
For an online order, paying by credit card where possible gives you the purchase-dispute route the FTC identifies for duplicate charges, non-delivery, and wrong or damaged goods. This can be especially useful when buying from an unfamiliar seller, though it is not a substitute for checking the seller before paying.
Before checking out, make sure the seller and the item are what you intend to buy. Look for the seller’s reputation and complaints or scam reports. Keep a record of what the seller promised, the order confirmation, and the amount you agreed to pay. Those steps do not replace your payment protections, but they help you identify what went wrong and give you records to refer to if you contact the seller or issuer.

A debit card can still be used carefully
If you choose debit, keep a close eye on transactions and statements, and report suspicious activity or a lost card immediately. Do not assume that a debit-card dispute for a missing or incorrect delivery will be handled under the same protections as a credit-card billing error. Contact the issuer promptly and ask what documentation and steps it requires.
Pay particular attention to whether the issue is a purchase you made or an electronic transfer you did not authorize. The CFPB guidance on unauthorized electronic transfers concerns investigation after you notify your bank or credit union; it does not mean every complaint about an order is treated as an unauthorized transfer. Describe the facts accurately, including whether you placed the order and whether the charge amount or item differed from what you agreed to.
Do not pay a seller that insists on hard-to-reverse methods
The FTC warns that a seller demanding gift cards, a wire transfer, a payment app, or cryptocurrency as the only way to pay is a scam warning. Stop and reassess rather than treating that demand as a normal checkout preference. Look for complaints or scam reports and check the seller’s reputation before placing the order.

This is a warning about the seller’s required payment method, not a claim that every use of a payment app or transfer is fraudulent. The point is that a demand to use one of those methods exclusively should make you pause. If the seller will not allow a conventional payment choice, consider walking away instead of sending money or codes before you can verify the offer.
What to do if a holiday purchase or card transaction goes wrong
If the card is lost or you see a charge you did not authorize
- Contact the card issuer or bank immediately. Use the number or reporting channel provided by the issuer, explain whether the card is lost or the transaction is unauthorized, and follow its instructions. Fast reporting is especially important with debit cards because potential liability can depend on when you report the loss. If you are not sure whether the transaction is unauthorized, report what you see and ask the issuer how to proceed.
- Ask what follow-up is required. For a credit-card billing error, the FTC says written notice should be sent within 60 days of the statement containing the error. Follow the issuer’s directions for where and how to send that notice, and keep a copy. For an unauthorized electronic transfer from a deposit account, the CFPB says the bank or credit union generally has 10 business days after notification to investigate.
- Keep records and watch subsequent statements. Save the statement, transaction details, confirmation of your report, and any messages from the issuer. Review later statements and account activity for additional unauthorized transactions. If more suspicious activity appears, contact the issuer again promptly and make clear that it is a new or continuing concern.
Do not wait for a holiday purchase to arrive before reporting a charge you did not authorize. Conversely, if you placed the order and the problem is that it did not arrive, say so; that is a purchase problem, not necessarily an unauthorized transaction. Clear facts help the issuer direct you to the relevant process.
If an order is duplicated, missing, or incorrect
- Gather the purchase records. Keep the order confirmation, receipt, delivery information, seller communications, and the statement showing the charge. The FTC advises consumers to keep receipts and order confirmations. Note the item, price, and what you expected to receive so you can describe the discrepancy accurately.
- Contact the seller and document the response. Explain the specific problem—duplicate billing, non-delivery, or an item that differs from the order—and retain the seller’s response. Checking the seller’s reputation before purchase can help you assess risk, but documentation is useful if a problem occurs. Keep copies of messages rather than relying only on a phone conversation.
- For a credit-card charge, contact the issuer about disputing it. If it is a billing error, send written notice within 60 days of the statement that contains the error, as the FTC advises. Use the issuer’s instructions and retain proof of what you sent. The dispute process does not guarantee that the charge will be reversed.
- For a debit-card charge, contact the issuer promptly. Explain whether the issue is an unauthorized transfer or a problem with goods or delivery; those are not the same kind of claim. Ask what protections and documentation apply to your situation rather than assuming the credit-card billing-error process applies.
Be specific about the outcome you are reporting: “I did not make this transaction,” “I was billed twice,” “the order never arrived,” or “the item was wrong or damaged.” Those statements describe distinct circumstances, and the issuer may need to establish which protections or procedures apply. Keep the date you first noticed the problem and the date you notified the issuer with your other records.
Deadlines that can change what you owe
The reported-loss deadlines matter most for debit cards. Under the FTC’s consumer guidance, reporting a lost or stolen debit card within two business days after learning of the loss generally limits potential liability to $50. Reporting later can raise potential liability to as much as $500 if you act within 60 calendar days after the statement is sent. Waiting more than 60 calendar days after the statement is sent can leave you responsible for all money taken and potentially more from linked accounts.
These time periods are not interchangeable. The two-business-day period is measured from when you learn the card is lost or stolen. The 60-calendar-day period is measured from when the statement is sent. If the statement includes an unauthorized transfer, delaying your report can have serious consequences under the FTC’s summary of debit-card protections. Report promptly rather than waiting until the end of either period.

For unauthorized credit-card charges, federal law limits liability to $50, and the FTC says there is no liability for unauthorized charges if you report a lost card before it is used. For a credit-card billing error, the separate 60-day period is for sending written notice measured from the statement containing the error. Do not confuse that purchase-dispute deadline with the rules for reporting a lost card or unauthorized use.
The CFPB says a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days to investigate an unauthorized electronic fund transfer after you notify it. This is an investigation period, not a deadline for you to wait before reporting, and not a promise that the same result or timing applies to every type of purchase complaint. Contact the financial institution as soon as you discover a concern and ask what it needs from you.
These are general federal thresholds described by the cited agencies. The clock and protections depend on the type of card and problem, and an issuer may ask you to take additional steps. Report concerns as soon as you discover them rather than waiting to determine which deadline applies.

What happens if an online order never arrives?
If you paid by credit card, the FTC says non-delivery can be a reason to dispute a charge. Keep the order confirmation and communications with the seller, contact the seller, and follow the card issuer’s process. For a billing error, send written notice within 60 days of the statement containing the error. Debit-card protections are different, so contact the issuer promptly and ask what applies.
How soon should I report a lost or stolen debit card?
Immediately after you learn of the loss. FTC guidance says reporting within two business days generally limits potential liability to $50. Reporting later can raise potential liability to $500 if you report within 60 calendar days after the statement is sent; waiting longer can expose you to all money taken and potentially more from linked accounts.
Does a credit card guarantee I will get my money back?
No. A credit-card dispute is a process, not a guaranteed refund. The FTC identifies certain purchase problems—such as duplicate billing, non-delivery, and wrong or damaged goods—as reasons to dispute a charge, but you must follow the issuer’s process and the outcome is not guaranteed.

Contact the card issuer or bank immediately, explain that you do not recognize or authorize the transaction, and follow its instructions. Keep the transaction details and confirmation of your report, then review later statements for additional activity. For an unauthorized electronic transfer, the CFPB says a bank or credit union generally has 10 business days after notification to investigate.
Is debit-card protection the same as credit-card protection for a wrong or missing order?
No. The FTC says debit-card protections differ from credit-card billing-error protections, and you may not be able to get a refund for non-delivery or a wrong item through the same protections. Contact your debit-card issuer promptly and ask what process and documentation apply.
Is a seller who only accepts gift cards or cryptocurrency a warning sign?
Yes. The FTC identifies a seller demanding gift cards, a wire transfer, a payment app, or cryptocurrency as the only payment method as a scam warning. Pause, check the seller’s reputation and look for complaints or scam reports rather than treating the demand as a routine checkout preference.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. holiday shopping—especially online—use a credit card if you want the clearer route the FTC identifies for disputing duplicate charges, non-delivery, and wrong or damaged goods. Neither card type guarantees a successful dispute. If you use debit, monitor the account and report a lost card or unauthorized transfer immediately: reporting delays can increase potential liability, and the transaction draws from your bank account.
