The Cabinet announced the increase on 18 April 2026. DA is an inflation-linked employee allowance; pensioners receive the corresponding payment under the separate name Dearness Relief (DR). The literal question—what are the types of dearness allowance, how is it calculated and revised?—needs one important qualification: this rate and explanation concern Central Government arrangements, not every Indian employer or wage regime.
What is dearness allowance?
Dearness Allowance is an inflation-related payment to covered employees. The Seventh Central Pay Commission describes its purpose as adjusting for cost of living and protecting Basic Pay from losing real value because of inflation. It says DA is based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) and recommends continuing the existing formula and methodology. In this context, “DA” means Dearness Allowance, not the travel-related use of “TA/DA.”

There is no single Central Government DA rate that can be applied to all Indian workers. Allowance arrangements depend on the employer and applicable pay or wage regime. For the latest figure below, the scope is specifically Central Government employees and pensioners.
#1 Best Overall
Central Government employees: DA
Covered Central Government employees receive DA as a percentage of Basic Pay. The 2026 Cabinet announcement sets the rate at 60% from 1 January 2026. The Department of Expenditure archive lists separate orders for employees continuing under 5th-, 6th- and 7th-CPC structures, so the announced 7th-CPC figure should not be assumed to settle a calculation under a different structure. The Cabinet announcement and Department of Expenditure allowance orders archive provide the relevant official references.
Pensioners: Dearness Relief (DR)
Pensioners receive the corresponding inflation-related payment as Dearness Relief, not employee DA. The Cabinet’s 2026 announcement covers both DA for employees and DR for pensioners, and states the rate as a percentage of Basic Pay or Pension. See the Cabinet release.

Other employer and wage regimes
State employees, public-sector enterprise (CPSE) employees, and workers covered by minimum-wage arrangements may be governed by different orders or systems, sometimes using different labels, indices, and calculation rules. The Central Government’s 60% figure does not establish their rates. Check the relevant state, employer, or wage authority’s current notification before applying a percentage; a complete cross-regime list cannot be inferred from the Central Government order.
What is the latest Central Government DA rate?
The Central Government rate verified for this article is 60% of Basic Pay, effective 1 January 2026. The Cabinet approved a 2 percentage point rise from 58% on 18 April 2026. The announcement says the change follows the accepted formula based on 7th Central Pay Commission recommendations and covers Central Government employees’ DA and pensioners’ DR. The Press Information Bureau announcement is the source for the percentage; the Department of Expenditure archive lists an associated order dated 22 April 2026.
Rank #3
The Cabinet reported that the increase would benefit about 50.46 lakh Central Government employees and 68.27 lakh pensioners, with a combined annual exchequer impact of ₹6,791.24 crore. These are figures reported by the Government of India in its 2026 announcement.
How is DA calculated?
For the Central Government framework, CPI-IW readings feed the applicable DA methodology. The Sixth Central Pay Commission decision material discusses a 12-month average and instalments effective on 1 January and 1 July. In plain terms, the relevant price-index readings over a reference period inform a revised allowance percentage, which the government announces for the covered group. The Sixth Central Pay Commission decision material describes that historical framework.
Rank #4
Do not use a generic online formula or percentage to calculate an individual’s entitlement without first confirming the applicable pay structure, government order, index series and period, and rounding rule. The Department of Expenditure archive contains separate orders for 5th-, 6th- and 7th-CPC structures. A 2025 Department of Expenditure circular describes Basic Pay in the 7th-CPC pay structure as pay drawn in the prescribed Pay Matrix level, excluding other kinds of pay such as special pay; it also specifies rounding fractions of 50 paise and above up to the next rupee and ignoring smaller fractions for that order. Treat these details as order-specific, not as a universal rule for every DA arrangement. Read the 2025 Department of Expenditure circular.

The established Central Government pattern is for instalments to take effect twice a year, on 1 January and 1 July. The date an increase is announced can be later than its effective date: the 2026 rise was announced on 18 April but effective from 1 January. Check the notification for both dates rather than assuming the announcement date is when the revised rate begins. The twice-yearly pattern is described in the Sixth Central Pay Commission decision material; the 2026 dates are in the Cabinet announcement.

How to check which DA rate applies to you
- Identify your employer and covered group. Confirm whether you are a Central Government employee, pensioner, state employee, CPSE worker, or covered by another wage arrangement.
- Confirm your pay structure. For Central Government staff, establish whether your service remains under a 5th-, 6th- or 7th-CPC structure; the Department of Expenditure archive lists separate orders.
- Find the applicable official order. Check the effective date, covered category, rate, calculation base, and any rounding provisions in the relevant notification. Do not substitute a rate announced for another group.
- For pension payments, look for DR. The employee allowance is DA; the pensioner payment is Dearness Relief.
