David Koch’s five practical ideas for reducing household bills are to use utilities carefully, negotiate better service deals, cut avoidable fees, review money habits and reduce car costs. His PerthNow column was published on 7 January 2024; for energy decisions today, compare offers using your actual usage and check current government guidance for your state or territory.

What David Koch’s 2024 article recommends

Koch’s central idea is to look for recurring “financial leaks”: costs that persist because they go unnoticed, unreviewed or unused efficiently. His column groups its suggestions into five areas. They are practical prompts, not quantified guarantees of savings.

1. Use utilities wisely

Switch off lights, heating and cooling when they are not needed; reduce unnecessary use of energy-intensive appliances; and consider efficient lighting and water products where they suit your home. Avoid leaving devices on standby unnecessarily.

2. Negotiate a better deal

Review what you pay for services such as gas, phone and internet. Ask your provider whether a more suitable plan, discount or bundle is available, and compare the full terms before changing.

3. Cut avoidable fees

Review financial charges and recurring costs so you can identify fees that may be avoidable. Check bills and account terms rather than relying on memory.

4. Review financial habits

Look for costs and missed opportunities in routine money management—for example, free trials that keep billing after a trial period or savings-account rates that change if conditions are not met.

5. Reduce car costs where practical

Drive efficiently and consider carpooling, public transport or cycling when these options fit your circumstances.

Why the article warns about small financial leaks

Koch’s column reported that a Finder survey of 1,090 people found 41% said they had made a financial blunder in the previous 12 months. As reported in the column, the most commonly cited examples included forgetting to cancel a free trial (17%), letting a gift card expire (14%) and exceeding data limits (13%). These are figures attributed to Finder by Koch, not independently verified here.

The column also reported that 11% had lent money without chasing repayment, 9% had missed a bonus savings rate, and self-reported financial mistakes were more common among Gen Z respondents (66%) than baby boomers (16%). Koch said the difference between a bonus and standard savings rate could exceed 5%. Treat these as the article’s 2024 reporting, not as current measurements or a forecast of what any individual will save.

How to compare Australian energy plans now

Energy costs depend on how much a household uses, when it uses it, its location and the plan’s prices and conditions. Bills can include a daily supply charge as well as usage charges—commonly priced per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for electricity and per megajoule (MJ) for gas. Compare estimated total costs for the same period using your own usage; a discount headline alone does not show whether a plan is cheaper for you.

Choose the comparison service for your location

The Australian Government directs residents of the ACT, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania to Energy Made Easy; Victoria residents to Victorian Energy Compare; and WA and NT residents to their respective jurisdictional guidance. The government comparison services are free and independent. If you would rather stay with your current provider, Moneysmart advises calling to ask whether a cheaper contract suits your household.

Compare the whole offer

  • Check the daily supply charge and usage rates, and compare them against your actual consumption.
  • Review contract length, fees, payment arrangements, conditional discounts and what happens when the contract ends.
  • If considering time-of-use pricing, check the retailer’s exact peak, shoulder and off-peak periods against your household’s routine. A tariff that rewards shifting use may not suit every schedule.
  • Check whether a smart meter is needed. These are typically needed for time-of-use tariffs and generally needed for demand tariffs.

The government says comparing an offer takes about 10 to 15 minutes and that households can typically save hundreds of dollars. That is a general statement, not a promised saving for a particular household.

Which household energy changes may help?

Energy.gov.au’s general guidance estimates that heating and cooling account for about 40% of household energy use, hot water about 25%, appliances about 30% and lighting about 5%. Those broad figures are not a breakdown of an individual home’s energy bill. The same government guidance suggests changes such as:

Energy.gov.au says that filling gaps to limit air leakage can cut an energy bill by up to 25%; the result depends on the home and the gaps. It also says a 4-star showerhead could save a family of four around $315 a year on water bills, with possible additional energy savings from heating less water. Good-quality LEDs use around 80% less energy than old-style bulbs. These are government guidance figures, not guaranteed results for every home.

The same page says fans can make people feel about 3°C cooler and cost around 2 cents an hour to run; adjusting heating or cooling by one degree changes energy use by 5% to 10%; and cold washing can use up to ten times less energy than a warm wash. These figures describe general examples. Actual consumption and savings vary with the home, equipment and usage.

What to do if a bill is unaffordable or seems wrong

If you are having difficulty paying an electricity, gas, phone or water bill, contact the provider promptly. Moneysmart says you can ask about options such as an extension, instalments, Centrelink deductions, or utility rebates and vouchers. For energy bills, ask the retailer about a payment plan or hardship program.

If an energy bill appears incorrect, ask the retailer to review it. If you are not satisfied with the response, contact the energy ombudsman in your state or territory. Check current local assistance and eligibility: the Australian Government says the Energy Bill Relief Fund ended on 31 December 2025, and points households to state and territory support instead.
