Houser has said of Rockstar’s intellectual property, “I don’t own the IP. That was the sort of part of the deal.” The statement is a useful limit on what can be inferred: his role in creating or writing games does not prove that he owns their franchises or receives their full commercial proceeds.

Houser left Rockstar in 2020 after an extended break that began in 2019. In a 2025 interview with The Guardian, he described working in full production mode for about 20 years and said it felt like the right time to try other work. He said: “I’d been in full production mode every single day from the very start of each project to the very end, for 20 years. I stayed so long because I loved the games. He later founded Absurd Ventures and has developed projects across media.
