Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li were identified as Reading FC’s ultimate beneficial owners from May 2017. The public record later documents worsening financial support, English Football League (EFL) action and a forced divestment process. It also records that several takeover attempts failed, including one involving Rob Couhig—but the available sources do not establish the private reasons each deal collapsed or identify a specific new revelation behind the original headline.
What was Dai Yongge’s role at Reading FC?
Hansard’s record of a petition identifies Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li as Reading’s ultimate beneficial owners from May 2017. That establishes their ownership role; it does not, by itself, explain the terms of their investment or the club’s finances. UK Parliament, Hansard, 13 May 2025.
The EFL said in January 2024 that Dai was no longer supporting Reading financially as he had after the 2017 change of control. This is the league’s account of the change, not an independently established explanation of his motives. In its statement, the EFL said it had become increasingly clear that Dai was “no longer in a position – or does not have the motivation – to support the Club financially as he did following the change of control in 2017.” EFL statement, 15 January 2024.
What financial and regulatory action followed?
In November 2023, the EFL described proceedings concerning Reading’s failure to place an amount equal to 125% of its forecast monthly wage bill in a designated account. The percentage was a regulatory funding requirement tied to the club’s forecast wage bill, not a fixed sum. EFL statement, 1 November 2023.

On 15 January 2024, the EFL said Dai had missed the latest deadline and had been in default for nearly four months. It imposed a further £50,000 fine, bringing the total fines stated by the EFL at that date to £80,000. That is a dated total, not a current balance, club valuation or sale price. On 21 March 2025, BBC Sport reported that the EFL had disqualified Dai under its Owners’ and Directors’ Test and set a deadline for him to sell the club. The BBC also reported that multiple takeover bids had fallen through, including one involving Rob Couhig. Which takeover attempts failed, and what happened next?
The public record cited here identifies Couhig among the parties whose takeover attempt fell through, but does not establish the private negotiations, financing details or specific cause of that failure. “Failed takeover” may refer to more than one proposed transaction, so the fact that a bid fell through should not be treated as a complete explanation of the ownership dispute.
Reading said on 27 March 2025 that it had filed its 2022/23 accounts and lifted the associated transfer embargo. Its statement also addressed the club’s position with the EFL and Dai’s director disqualification. Those developments concerned regulatory and reporting matters; they do not explain why earlier takeover bids failed. Reading FC statement, 27 March 2025.

On 22 April, the EFL extended the divestment deadline to 5 May, citing progress on a proposed sale. It also said it would continue monitoring Reading’s immediate cash-flow requirements. EFL statement, 22 April 2025.
On 3 May, Reading announced a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited, including the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. The club described Redwood as a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC, owned by Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair. The announcement said the transaction remained subject to final legal technicalities; it was not confirmation of a completed sale. What the public record does—and does not—show
The documented sequence is ownership from 2017, later EFL concerns about financial support and a missed deposit-account deadline, Dai’s disqualification and requirement to sell, and Reading’s May 2025 announcement of a sale in principle. The sources cited here do not establish that a particular private disclosure caused a failed bid, nor do they explain every deal’s failure. They also do not establish an independent market valuation, purchase price or completed transaction terms.
