In February 2025, two hikers near the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic spotted a container sticking out of a stone wall. Inside were 598 gold coins dated between 1808 and 1915. A second container held jewelry and personal items. The combined cache was estimated at about $340,000 at the time, but that figure was reported as an estimate—not a confirmed sale price.
What did the hikers find?
The hikers found an aluminum container holding 598 gold coins arranged in columns and wrapped in black cloth. About three feet away was a metal box containing a separate assortment of objects. Together, the cache weighed about 15 pounds, according to contemporary reporting on the Museum of East Bohemia’s discovery details.
Reports describe the second box as holding 16 tobacco or snuff bags or cases, 10 bracelets, a wire-mesh bag, a comb, a powder compact, and a chain with a key. The terminology for the bags varies among reports, and the objects’ metal composition and origins were still being studied. It is not established that every item was gold.
Where and when was the treasure discovered?
The hikers noticed the container protruding from a man-made stone wall while walking near the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic. They handed the find to the Museum of East Bohemia for examination. The reported discovery took place in February 2025.

How old are the coins, and where did they come from?
The dates on the coins range from 1808 to 1915; 1808 is the earliest reported date, not the date of every coin. The coins came from several regions. Reported origins include France, Belgium, Turkey or the Ottoman Empire, Romania, Italy, and Russia.
Museum numismatist Vojtěch Brádle said countermarks on some coins indicate they were reissued in the Balkans in 1921, after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. The mix of dates, origins, and later markings means the cache should not be described as an exclusively Austro-Hungarian hoard.

Who hid the coins, and why did no one return?
No owner or reason for hiding the cache has been established. Researchers have raised possible connections to people concealing valuables during Nazi annexation and persecution in the 1930s, or to retreating forces at the end of World War II. These are possibilities, not confirmed explanations.
The objects were hidden but never recovered, and the reviewed reporting says researchers remain puzzled by that. Miroslav Novák, head of the museum’s archaeological department, described valuables as sometimes being buried in uncertain times with the intention of returning for them. That general explanation does not identify who hid this particular cache or explain why they did not come back.

How much is the cache worth?
Contemporary reports put the combined estimated value at about $340,000, or 7.5 million Czech crowns. The coverage does not identify that figure as an auction result or a calculated melt value, so it should be treated as a reported estimate from the time—not a current market quote or confirmed sale price.
Brádle said the coins’ significance was not simply their nominal purchasing power: the hoard was deliberately hidden because the coins were precious metal. That observation speaks to why the coins may have mattered to someone, but it does not establish the cache’s historical owner, motive, or formal valuation.

Will the hikers receive a reward?
Popular Science reported that Czech law entitles finders to a reward of up to 10 percent of a find’s value. The reporting reviewed does not establish whether these hikers received or will receive a reward, nor does it document a legal ruling on the amount. The reported maximum should not be mistaken for a confirmed payment.

The Museum of East Bohemia received the coins and other objects and was studying, cataloguing, and preserving them. Contemporary coverage said a public display was hoped for, but it did not confirm that an exhibit opened or give a date. The full inventory, object analyses, ownership, and valuation basis are not established in that reporting.
