The CSIR UGC NET December 2025 application window is closed, and that exam has already taken place. Although the original notice gave 24 October 2025 as the deadline, the National Testing Agency (NTA) later extended applications to 27 October. The exam was held on 18 December 2025. As of 8 October 2026, the official December 2025 portal says new registration is over; the CSIR-NET home page lists December 2026 applications as live.

What happened to the October 24 deadline?

NTA’s September 2025 information bulletin originally set the application period for 25 September through 24 October 2025, with applications closing at 11:50 p.m. It initially set the fee-payment deadline for 25 October, also at 11:50 p.m. NTA then issued an extension notice on 24 October, moving the application deadline to 27 October and the fee-payment deadline to 28 October. Both revised deadlines were 11:50 p.m. The correction window ran from 30 October through 1 November 2025, closing at 11:50 p.m. on the final day. NTA’s December 2025 information bulletin and extension notice record the original and revised dates.

Can you still apply for the December 2025 cycle?

No. The December 2025 examination cycle is over: the official schedule sets the exam for 18 December 2025, and the candidate portal says new registration is over. The December 2025 candidate portal is not an open application route. For the current cycle, the CSIR-NET home page lists December 2026 applications as live; check that official page for its current instructions and deadlines rather than relying on the 2025 dates.

What were the 2025 application fees?

The 2025 bulletin listed these application fees. Applicable bank or payment-gateway service charges could be additional. It allowed payment by debit card, credit card, UPI or internet banking.

Category Application fee
General INR 1,150
General-EWS or OBC(NCL) INR 600
SC, ST, PwD, PwBD or Third Gender INR 325

These are fees for the December 2025 application, not a statement of the fees for the December 2026 cycle. See the 2025 information bulletin for the fee and payment details.

What was the exam for, and who could apply?

The Joint CSIR-UGC NET determined eligibility for three possible outcomes in Indian universities and colleges:

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as Assistant Professor.
  • Assistant Professor appointment and admission to a Ph.D. programme.
  • Admission to a Ph.D. programme only.

Whether an individual qualified depended on the bulletin’s detailed requirements, including qualification, marks, age and applicable relaxations. The short announcement alone is not enough to establish personal eligibility. Consult the relevant cycle’s official bulletin for the criteria that apply to your category and circumstances.

Which subjects and paper sections were included?

The December 2025 application offered five subject choices, and candidates had to select one:

  • Chemical Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Earth Sciences (Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences)
  • Life Sciences

The objective, computer-based test had three parts: Part A assessed general aptitude, Part B covered the selected subject, and Part C tested higher-order application and analysis. The exam lasted 180 minutes. The NTA December 2025 FAQ describes the subject choices and paper structure; the information bulletin sets out the exam details.

How was the exam scheduled?

The 18 December 2025 examination was scheduled in two shifts: Shift 1 from 9 a.m. to noon and Shift 2 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. A candidate’s particular centre, date and shift were shown on the admit card. See the official examination schedule for the shift timings.

What application rules and documents mattered?

For the 2025 cycle, candidates were required to apply online through the official portal, choose one subject and submit one application. The FAQ warns that multiple subject selections or multiple applications could lead to cancellation. The application required scanned photograph and signature uploads; category, PwD or result-awaited documents were also needed where applicable. Refer to the official FAQ and the cycle’s bulletin for document specifications and full application requirements.
