An exchange wallet is controlled by a platform that manages the private keys for you. With a self-custody wallet, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting them and their recovery information. The practical choice is between relying on a provider for access and recovery, or taking direct control and accepting responsibility for your own backups and security.
What a crypto wallet does
A crypto wallet does not hold coins the way a physical wallet holds cash. It manages the keys used to access crypto assets and authorize transactions. The assets are recorded on their respective blockchains; the wallet provides a way to interact with them.
Coinbase summarizes the distinction this way: “Cryptocurrency is held in one of two ways: on an exchange, where a platform manages your funds on your behalf, or in a self-custody wallet, where you hold your own private keys and have direct control over your assets.” Coinbase Help: Exchanges and self-custody wallets
Exchange wallet vs. self-custody wallet
| Question | Exchange or custodial wallet | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The platform manages the private keys on your behalf. | You control the keys and recovery information. |
| How might access be restored? | The provider may offer account or password recovery, subject to its procedures. | You rely on your keys or recovery setup. If the necessary phrase or key is lost, the assets may be permanently inaccessible. |
| What is the main dependency? | You rely on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. | You rely on your own protection of keys, device, and backups. |
| What is it commonly used for? | Account-based buying, selling, sending, and receiving through the platform. | Direct control and, depending on the wallet and supported network, access to on-chain applications and other advanced activity. |
| Is a physical device part of the model? | No physical device is inherent to custodial storage. | A hardware wallet is an optional device that keeps keys offline; it does not remove the need to protect recovery information. |
Labels alone do not establish who has control. A company may offer both an exchange account with a hosted wallet and a separate self-custody wallet. Check the specific product’s key-control and recovery arrangements, which may differ by service and region. Coinbase’s wallet overview

What you take on with self-custody
Self-custody removes the custodian relationship, but it transfers key security to you. You need to keep access credentials and backups safe, understand how your wallet works, and avoid exposing information that could let someone else control the assets. Bitcoin.org describes this as a trade-off: trusting an exchange or custodian creates counterparty risk, while holding your own keys makes you responsible for securing them. Protect the recovery phrase
A recovery phrase can function as the master key to the wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated accounts. Ethereum.org says legitimate support agents and websites will not ask you to provide it. Do not disclose it to someone claiming to be support or enter it into an unsolicited site or form. Screenshots may sync to cloud services, which can expose the phrase. Ethereum.org: Security

Know what happens if access is lost
If you lose a self-custody wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys and have no other valid recovery method, the funds may not be recoverable. For a centralized exchange account, contact the exchange’s support team about its account-recovery process; that is not a guarantee that access will be restored or that withdrawals will be available. What a hardware wallet changes—and what it does not
A hardware wallet is an optional physical tool for self-custody. It stores private keys offline, but you still control those keys and must protect the recovery information and know how to operate the device. Offline storage is not a guarantee against theft or loss, and it does not make a recovery phrase unnecessary. Ethereum.org: Security and Coinbase’s wallet overview

Questions to consider before choosing
- Do you want provider-based account recovery? A custodial platform may have account-recovery procedures, but access remains subject to its policies and availability.
- Can you reliably protect keys and backups? Self-custody means you—not a provider—must prevent loss, exposure, or misuse of recovery information.
- How will you use the assets? An exchange account can suit platform-based buying and selling; self-custody may be needed for direct control or supported on-chain applications.
- What risks are you prepared to manage? Custody means depending on a provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal rules; self-custody means managing your own keys, device, and backups.
Neither model is risk-free, and the sources cited here do not establish comparative rates of loss, theft, or insolvency. The appropriate choice depends on your comfort with provider dependence, direct control, recovery responsibilities, and intended transactions.
