Crypto Token Listing Scams: Warning Signs and How to Avoid Them

A claimed crypto exchange listing is not proof that a token is safe. Verify announcements through the exchange’s official channels and watch for pressure, impersonation, and fake withdrawal fees.

A claimed exchange listing is not proof that a crypto token is legitimate—or that an exchange has vetted it in a way that protects you. Verify any listing through the exchange’s official channels reached independently, research the token and its promoters, and do not send money, login details, or personal information in response to an unsolicited message or high-pressure pitch.

How to check whether a token listing announcement is real

  1. Find the exchange independently. Type its known website address yourself or use contact information you locate separately. Do not click links or call numbers in an unsolicited message. The FBI warns that scammers impersonate exchange employees, create urgency about an account, and seek login or identification details. Its advice is direct: “If anyone asks for your account log-in information at any point, do not provide it.” FBI/IC3 guidance on exchange impersonation.
  2. Check the exchange’s own announcements. Look for the token and the specific trading pair, network, or launch details in announcements published on the exchange’s independently verified site or official account. A screenshot or forwarded post is not confirmation.
  3. Inspect the exact web address. Compare the address with the exchange’s real site, watching for lookalike spelling, extra words, or unfamiliar domains. Avoid signing in through a link supplied by a promoter or caller.
  4. Research the token and the people behind it. Read the project materials and check whether the team, company, and claimed affiliates can be independently identified. Search the token and company names with terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” The CFTC advises buyers to understand what rights a token provides and how proceeds will be used; its advisory says, “Your best protection is to thoroughly research digital coins or tokens and exercise caution.” CFTC advisory on digital tokens.
  5. Do not treat “listed,” “approved,” or “screened” as regulatory approval. The SEC has cautioned that some online digital-asset trading platforms’ claimed selection standards are not reviewed by the SEC and should not be equated with listing standards of national securities exchanges. That warning does not mean every token or platform is unlawful; the legal treatment of a particular asset depends on the facts. SEC statement on digital-asset issuance and trading.

Warning signs that deserve an independent check

These warning signs come from documented neighboring schemes—including exchange impersonation, fake investment websites, token impersonation, and pump-and-dump promotion. They are reasons to pause and verify, not proof by themselves that a listing or fee is fraudulent. Legitimate exchanges may have listing processes, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal listing-fee scam pattern.

  • An unsolicited contact claims to be from an exchange. A caller or message may say there is an urgent account problem, a listing opportunity, or a need to verify your identity. End the conversation and contact the exchange using independently found information. Never give account credentials to someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
  • The pitch promises guaranteed returns or little to no risk. The SEC and CFTC warn that unsolicited pitches, unlicensed sellers, and claims of high guaranteed returns with little or no risk are red flags. FTC guidance also warns about promises of fast money and pressure to pay in cryptocurrency. SEC/CFTC investor alert on crypto-asset investment scams and FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams.
  • The promotion relies on hype, social-media tips, or a sudden price spike. The CFTC cautions against buying tokens based on social-media tips or sudden jumps in price. A claimed listing announcement or influencer endorsement does not replace research into the project and its promoters. CFTC advisory on virtual-currency pump-and-dump schemes.
  • The project cannot explain the token’s purpose, rights, or use of proceeds. Look for clear descriptions of what holders receive, what the project intends to build, and how funds will be used. A white paper or project plan is useful material to examine, but it does not independently prove the claims are true.
  • You are pressured to send crypto to secure access, a listing, or profits. Urgency, secrecy, and pressure to act before checking are reasons to stop. Crypto payments can be difficult to reverse, and a demand for payment is not evidence that the opportunity is genuine. FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams.
  • A platform displays profits but demands a new payment to release them. The FBI warns that fraudulent investment schemes may show fake profits and then demand “taxes,” fees, or other charges when victims try to withdraw. Do not send additional money to unlock a purported balance; payment does not guarantee recovery. The FBI also warns about recovery services that ask for upfront fees. FBI advisory on cryptocurrency investment fraud.

What to examine before trusting a token or promoter

Use the same checks for a token promoted as newly listed, soon to be listed, or selected by an exchange. A credible announcement answers verifiable questions rather than asking you to rely on a promise.

  • Token rights: What, if anything, does owning the token entitle you to? Are those rights and restrictions stated clearly?
  • Project and proceeds: What product or service is the token meant to support, and how does the project say it will use funds?
  • People and affiliations: Are the individuals, company, and claimed partners identifiable and independently checkable?
  • Evidence behind claims: Do project documents support the claims, or does the pitch depend mainly on urgency, hype, social posts, or guaranteed returns?
  • Risks to value: Consider liquidity, future demand, competing projects, technological change, and theft risk. A listing alone does not establish future demand or value.

When comparing claims, assess whether the exchange identity and contact path are verifiable, whether token rights and intended uses are clear, whether promoters can be checked, whether claims have documentation, and whether the project addresses proceeds, liquidity, demand, and risks. These checks help organize due diligence; they are not a ranking or guarantee.

What to do if you sent money or shared information

  1. Stop sending funds. Do not pay a further fee, tax, or supposed recovery charge, and stop using the suspicious contact channel.
  2. Secure any potentially affected account. Contact the real exchange through a separately verified website or support channel if you shared credentials or suspect account access. Change compromised passwords and follow the exchange’s account-security steps.
  3. Preserve evidence. Save messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, website addresses, app names, payment details, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, dates, and screenshots. The FBI asks people reporting these schemes to provide information about the person or company, communication methods, websites or apps, bank accounts and crypto wallets, recipients, and screenshots when available.
  4. Report it through appropriate channels. In the United States, report suspected internet crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), crypto scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and token fraud to the CFTC where relevant. These reports document suspected wrongdoing but do not guarantee that cryptocurrency will be returned. Outside the United States, contact local law enforcement, your consumer-protection authority, and the relevant financial regulator. FBI IC3 complaint portal, FTC ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and CFTC complaint page.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

Official figures describe broader crypto-investment fraud, not token-listing scams as a separately measured category. The FBI said victims lost more than $2 billion in cryptocurrency investment schemes during 2022, according to its IC3 report published in 2023. The FTC said consumers had reported more than $80 million in losses to bogus cryptocurrency investments since October 2020, in a 2021 report. Neither figure estimates how often listing claims are fraudulent. FBI IC3 2022 annual report and FTC 2021 cryptocurrency scam report.
