Crypto Tax Software Compared: Features to Check Before You Choose

The right crypto tax software covers your accounts and transaction types, makes errors reviewable, and produces useful reports for your jurisdiction and filing workflow.

Choose crypto tax software that covers your actual exchanges, wallets, and transaction types, then lets you reconcile the imported records and verify cost basis before producing forms or reports. No tool can make an incomplete transaction history reliable on its own: compare support for your jurisdiction and filing workflow, along with plan limits, security terms, and data access.

What crypto tax software should do

A useful tool brings activity from exchanges and wallets into a reviewable record, helps identify missing or misclassified transactions, and produces tax outputs suited to your filing situation. Its reports are only as dependable as the data and assumptions behind them. A connected exchange account is not necessarily a complete record of activity across all accounts and wallets.

For U.S. federal taxes, the IRS says taxpayers with digital-asset transactions should keep records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions, and fair market value when digital assets are received as income or business payment. For a disposal, relevant calculation inputs include the asset, date and time, quantity, fair market value, and basis. See the IRS digital assets guidance.

Exchange, wallet, and chain coverage

Check every exchange, wallet, chain, and account you have used—not just the account where you currently hold assets. Ask whether the software can import historical activity and accept CSV files when a direct connection is unavailable. Confirm that the connection covers the records and dates you need; a provider’s general claim of broad coverage does not establish support for every account or transaction.

Reconciliation and corrections

Look for a transaction-level review that helps you inspect transfers, identify duplicates or missing records, classify income and disposals, and correct an incorrect or absent basis. Unmatched transfers can otherwise look like taxable disposals or unexplained deposits. Before relying on an output, find out how the software surfaces unresolved items and whether you can edit them on your plan.

Cost-basis controls

Verify which cost-basis methods the tool supports and whether it can accommodate the record-level identification you need. Make sure its settings can be aligned with your exchange’s settings and retained consistently for each tax year. Do not assume that a setting called “Specific Identification” provides unit-by-unit selection; implementation differs by provider.

CoinTracker’s U.S. help article says FIFO and Specific Identification are accepted methods for transactions from 2025 onward, discusses making a specific identification at or before a sale, and says its software does not offer unit-by-unit identification. This is that provider’s description of its own software and tax guidance, not a universal statement about every tool or a substitute for checking applicable IRS rules. See CoinTracker’s cost-basis guidance.

Support for your transaction mix

Match the software’s documented capabilities against your actual activity. Ask specifically about trades, transfers, fees, staking, mining, airdrops, NFTs, DeFi, derivatives, or business activity where applicable. “Crypto support” alone does not tell you whether the tool can classify a particular event correctly or produce the reporting you need.

Forms, reports, and filing integrations

Find out whether the product generates forms for your country and lets you export transaction-level detail as well as gains, income, and balance reports. If you use a tax professional or separate filing product, check what data can be exported or transferred and whether the integration is included in your selected plan.

For U.S. federal reporting, form choice depends on the transaction. The IRS identifies Form 8949 for dispositions of capital assets and Schedule 1 for certain ordinary income related to forks, staking, and mining; wages, contractor income, gifts, and business activity can follow different reporting routes. The IRS says broker reporting on Form 1099-DA begins for covered dispositions on or after January 1, 2025. That form does not remove the need to reconcile your own records across wallets and accounts. Consult the IRS digital assets guidance for the relevant reporting details.

As one provider example, CoinTracker documents transaction-history, capital-gains, income, and end-of-year balance CSV reports, and says those CSVs support reporting but do not replace official tax forms. It also describes country-specific forms in select regions, CSV reports elsewhere, and TurboTax and H&R Block integrations for U.S. customers. These are documented capabilities for CoinTracker only, not evidence that it is more accurate than other software. See its report guide and tax product information.

Check plan limits, geography, and data handling

A feature may be available only on a particular tier. Compare the plan you would actually buy, rather than relying on a headline feature list. CoinTracker’s plans page, for example, places editing, filing integrations, tax-lot tools, harvesting features, and support at different plan levels. Features, transaction caps, and prices can change, so verify current terms directly on the CoinTracker plans page or the provider’s current plan page before subscribing.

A practical selection checklist

  1. List every exchange, wallet, chain, account, and tax year you need to cover.
  2. Match your transaction types to the provider’s documented import and classification support; confirm CSV options for any unsupported direct connection.
  3. Check whether you can inspect and correct transfers, duplicates, missing basis, and unresolved classifications.
  4. Verify the cost-basis methods and level of identification supported for your situation, and compare settings with the relevant exchange records.
  5. Confirm that required jurisdiction-specific forms and useful transaction-level exports are available.
  6. Check filing integrations, transaction limits, support, plan tier, current price, and data-handling terms before connecting accounts.
  7. Review the generated records and resolve unexplained or incomplete items before using the output for a return.

What an exchange statement or Form 1099-DA leaves unresolved

A broker statement covers reporting within its scope; it does not by itself establish that your records include activity across other brokers, self-hosted wallets, or all taxable events. The IRS recordkeeping guidance still makes the taxpayer’s records central to substantiating return positions. Keep transaction records and reconcile them with any broker forms rather than treating the forms as a complete history.

The cited IRS guidance establishes the start date for broker reporting on covered dispositions, but it does not establish the complete cost-basis phase-in or how every software vendor currently ingests Form 1099-DA data. Verify those details with the IRS and the software provider if they affect your filing.

How to judge “IRS-ready” reports

There is no basis here for naming one product as the most accurate. Vendor feature descriptions establish what a company says its product can do; they are not independent accuracy tests. Instead, check whether the report reflects complete source data, whether you can inspect and correct the underlying transactions, whether the cost-basis treatment matches your records and applicable rules, and whether the output fits the form or workflow required for your activity.

For complicated transactions, uncertain classifications, or questions about cost-basis identification, consult a qualified tax professional. A report can organize records, but it cannot settle a tax question merely by labeling an output as ready to file.
