Three cases reported by The Guardian on May 4, 2025 illustrate how alleged perpetrators may target people around someone believed to have crypto wealth. The facts below are reported allegations, not a claim that every detail has been established in court.

The May 2025 prosecutor statement quoted by The Guardian said: “The victim appears to be the father of a man who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies, with the crime involving a ransom demand.” That wording describes the authorities’ stated view of one case; it does not establish a general pattern or motive across all incidents.
Why relatives and associates may be exposed
In these reports, the apparent target is not always the person who holds or made money from cryptocurrency. Relatives and business associates may be targeted because attackers believe they can provide access to wealth or exert pressure on someone else. That is a plausible reading of the reported relationships and ransom demands, not a demonstrated explanation for every case.

Cryptocurrency can be transferred across borders, but the cited reporting does not show how any particular wallet, exchange account, or transaction was accessed—or whether money was ultimately paid. The €5–7 million and around €10 million figures are demands reported in specific cases, not typical ransom amounts or confirmed payments.
Do the cases prove crypto kidnappings are becoming more common?
No reliable incident-count statistic or comparable cross-country prevalence figure is established by these sources. A handful of severe reports can show that a type of crime has occurred; by themselves, they cannot establish that it is increasing, how widespread it is, or whether cryptocurrency wealth is the sole cause.

The article itself was not available in the cited material for verifying further details, so it cannot support a broader count or a detailed comparison with the French cases: Ars Technica.
As of the reporting cited here, the careful conclusion is that French authorities and media described several violent incidents linked in some way to perceived crypto wealth. The sources do not establish a current Europe-wide trend through 2026, and later investigation outcomes are not verified here.
