Crypto Presales FAQ: Vesting, Claim Dates, and Token Unlocks

Crypto presales have no standard claim date or vesting formula. Learn how cliffs, unlocks, release transactions, and allocation-specific schedules work.

There is no universal crypto presale claim date or standard vesting formula. The release schedule depends on the specific token, sale round, allocation category, and contract. Before relying on a date or percentage, check the current official terms for your allocation and wallet—and distinguish tokens becoming eligible to claim from tokens actually arriving in your wallet.

What do vesting, cliff, unlock, and claim mean?

  • Vesting is the schedule or set of conditions under which an allocation becomes available over time. OpenZeppelin’s VestingWallet documentation describes a customizable release schedule, with a linear curve in its default implementation.
  • Cliff is the earliest time any amount can vest. Frontier’s vesting documentation explains that nothing is releasable before the cliff.
  • Cadence or slice period is how often an increment becomes available. Frontier describes a slice-based schedule that rounds releases down to the nearest slice.
  • Unlock means that some tokens have become available under the project’s rules. It does not, by itself, establish that the tokens have been sent to your wallet.
  • Claim or release is a transaction or contract operation that transfers eligible tokens when the implementation requires one. OpenZeppelin documents a release operation for vested amounts.
  • TGE means token generation event. Its timing and relationship to vesting or claims must be defined by the particular sale documents.

When can I claim presale tokens?

Only the terms for the named token, sale round, and allocation can establish a claim date. Do not assume claims open at TGE: a schedule may provide no TGE release, delay the first release until after a cliff, or make a portion available under a different rule. Check the current official claim instructions as well as the sale terms, since an older announcement may not describe the live process.

For a specific allocation, confirm the schedule’s start event or timestamp, any cliff, vesting duration, release cadence or formula, and the amount covered. Also establish whether the published schedule is implemented in a smart contract or administered another way. If those details are not stated for your exact allocation, its claim date cannot be determined from the word “presale.”

Do unlocked tokens arrive automatically?

Not necessarily. Eligibility to release tokens and delivery to a wallet can be separate steps. Depending on the project’s implementation, eligible tokens may require a claim or release transaction through an official interface or contract; another arrangement may work differently. OpenZeppelin’s documentation describes a release operation, while Forcefi’s sale terms describe claims through project contracts following TGE for that project’s stated allocation.

For your own tokens, use the project’s current official instructions to determine whether you must connect the receiving wallet, submit a transaction, or satisfy another condition. The sources do not establish a general rule for transaction fees, claim deadlines, or what happens if a claim is missed, so verify those terms rather than assuming they are the same across presales.

What does a cliff or release cadence look like in practice?

A cliff delays the first vesting release; it does not necessarily mean the whole allocation unlocks when the cliff ends. Afterward, releases may accrue continuously or become available in periodic slices. The contract or sale terms determine the formula, including how it handles time between release dates.

Project disclosures show why allocation categories matter. In a 2026 registration statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Canary Capital Group LLC described historical Injective schedules in which seed-sale participants received no tokens at TGE, then faced a seven-month cliff followed by 33.3% unlocks every six months. Private-sale participants were described as having an eight-month cliff and the same biannual cadence. The filing reports that the full 100 million INJ genesis supply was fully unlocked by January 2024; these are historical disclosure details, not a default presale schedule or a current circulating-supply figure. See the SEC-filed Injective registration statement.

Another 2026 SEC filing illustrates that unlock schedules can differ across categories and extend over several years. The SUI registration statement reports 10 billion Genesis SUI Tokens at genesis, 3,736 million circulating supply as of December 15, 2025, and current distribution schedules expected to conclude between 2027 and 2030. Those dated figures describe SUI disclosures, not a general forecast or current 2026 supply figure. See the SEC-filed SUI registration statement.

Forcefi’s undated sale-terms page, accessed October 4, 2026, gives a separate project-specific example: a treasury/reserve allocation with a five-month cliff and 24-month vesting, with claims described as available through project contracts following TGE. None of these examples establishes terms for another token. An SEC filing is a disclosure, not investment approval or a guarantee of future performance, and an unlock percentage alone does not establish a market effect.

How should I check a presale vesting schedule?

  1. Identify the allocation: Match the token, sale round, beneficiary or wallet, and allocation category to the official terms. A project can assign different schedules to different categories.
  2. Read the full timing formula: Find the start event or timestamp, cliff, total duration, first release, cadence or slice period, and whether any amount is available at TGE. A phrase such as “linear vesting” is not enough without its start and end conditions.
  3. Find the governing mechanism: Determine whether the schedule is set out in sale terms, enforced by a smart contract, or administered by another authority. Industry disclosure guidance discusses vesting and lock-up terms; SEC Crypto Task Force materials also identify distribution schedules and release mechanics as offering details. These materials support checking what is disclosed, not treating a disclosure as a universal legal rule. See the SEC-filed industry guidelines and the SEC Crypto Task Force.
  4. Match the contract and claim route: Use the official contract address and instructions, and check whether the code or contract corresponds to the published terms. Do not treat a schedule as independently verified unless that verification has actually been done.
  5. Check claim conditions: Establish whether tokens are automatically transferred or require a transaction, whether fees apply, and whether a deadline or other condition exists. These details are project-specific.
  6. Put the unlock in supply context: Compare the allocation with total and circulating supply, other category allocations, future issuance or burns, and other unlocks around the same time. Do not infer a price or market impact from the unlock amount alone.

Why can two presale holders have different unlock dates?

They may belong to different allocation categories or sale rounds, each with its own cliff, first release, cadence, or duration. Even within one token project, seed, private-sale, treasury, and other allocations need not share a schedule. Compare the terms for the exact category attached to your wallet rather than applying another holder’s dates to your allocation.

What cannot be determined without a named token and sale round?

Without the exact project and allocation, there is no reliable way to establish a claim date, claim method, fee, deadline, remaining vesting balance, or consequence for failing to claim. Those details must come from the named project’s current official terms and claim instructions. Treat a schedule as a verifiable promise only to the extent that its governing terms and implementation can be identified.
