Crypto Presale Scams: Warning Signs and How to Protect Your Wallet

Guaranteed returns, urgency, fake account balances, seed-phrase requests, and pay-to-withdraw demands are warning signs. Here’s how to check a presale and protect your wallet.

No checklist can certify a crypto presale as safe. Before sending funds, independently verify who is behind the offer, what it promises, and what your wallet would authorize. Guaranteed returns, pressure to buy quickly, requests for your seed phrase, and fees demanded to release a balance are serious warning signs—not, by themselves, proof about a specific sale.

What makes a crypto presale a potential scam?

A presale is an offer to buy a token before or around its public launch. The label alone does not establish that the offer is legitimate or fraudulent. The specific project, seller, claims, transaction, and applicable law all matter. U.S. federal guidance from the FBI and FTC describes common investment-fraud and wallet-phishing tactics, but it does not assess any particular presale.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says investment fraud often presents an investment as low-risk or risk-free when the opportunity does not exist. It warns: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed return on investment.” The FTC likewise cautions that scammers use promises of quick gains to draw people into crypto investments. Treat guaranteed, unusually large, or fast returns as a reason to stop and check—not as evidence that a particular project has already been proven fraudulent. Warning signs to check before you pay

Guaranteed gains, urgency, and scarcity

Be skeptical of promises of fast, easy profits, a “ground floor” opportunity, or an allocation that supposedly disappears unless you act immediately. IC3 describes time-limited pitches and matching incentives as tactics used to induce more investment. A legitimate deadline or limited allocation is not conclusive either way; the concern is pressure that discourages independent verification.

Polished websites and social proof

A professional-looking site, customer-support portal, glowing testimonials, or a friendly contact in a group chat does not verify an investment. IC3 warns that scammers may use social media, texts, dating sites, and group chats to build trust, then direct people to an investment site with a name that spoofs a legitimate platform. Displayed balances and returns can be fabricated, and a small early withdrawal may be allowed to build confidence before the promoter seeks larger deposits.

Check the project identity, seller, and website independently rather than relying only on links and materials supplied by the promoter. Search the domain and identifying details, and compare claims against sources that are not controlled by the project. Do not treat screenshots, chat activity, or a successful small withdrawal as proof that funds can be withdrawn later.

Wallet connections, unsolicited links, and seed phrases

A seed phrase is a sequence of 12 to 24 wallet-generated words that can serve as the key to the associated crypto. Never give it to a presale promoter, enter it into an unsolicited link, or share it to claim an airdrop or reward. Do not disclose wallet passwords or one-time codes to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

The FBI’s 2025 wallet-focused warning describes criminals using unsolicited airdrop rewards and links to direct people to third-party sites or decentralized applications that request a wallet connection, password, or seed phrase. A noncustodial wallet is one in which the user controls the private keys and assets; if those credentials are exposed, criminals may access and drain the wallet. The warning concerns Hedera wallet airdrop abuse, so it should not be read as a claim that every wallet or blockchain works identically. Its practical advice about protecting credentials and checking unsolicited links applies broadly. Verify any offer through an official channel you locate independently. Extra fees to withdraw

Do not assume an apparent investment balance is real or withdrawable. IC3 warns that a scammer may freeze a displayed account when the victim tries to withdraw and demand arbitrary “taxes” or fees first. Paying can lead to another demand rather than release of funds. A demand to send additional crypto to unlock a balance is a major warning sign; do not send more just because the platform labels the payment a tax, fee, or release charge.

A practical verification checklist

  1. Pause the transfer. Stop if the offer guarantees returns, promises fast and easy profit, or pressures you with a short deadline or scarce allocation.
  2. Verify identity and domain. Independently check the seller, project name, website address, and material claims. Do not rely solely on a promoter’s site, links, testimonials, group chats, or screenshots.
  3. Separate proof from appearance. A polished site, displayed gains, or a successful small withdrawal is weak evidence; IC3 says these can be part of a confidence-building stage.
  4. Review wallet requests before approving. Do not reveal a seed phrase, password, or one-time code. Avoid unsolicited reward links, and understand what a wallet connection or transaction asks you to authorize.
  5. Reject pay-to-withdraw demands. Do not send extra crypto to release an apparent balance or satisfy an unexpected fee demand.
  6. Consider the legal context. Under U.S. federal securities law, a crypto asset that is not itself a security may still be offered or sold as part of an investment contract. The SEC describes the Howey factors as an investment of money in a common enterprise, a reasonable expectation of profits, and profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. Whether securities laws apply depends on the facts; calling something a “token” does not settle the question. This is general U.S. context, not individualized legal advice. SEC guidance on crypto assets and investment contracts.

These checks are not a validated scoring system, and passing them does not establish that an offer is safe. A specific assessment would require evidence about the seller and domain, substantiation for sale claims, the wallet transaction, withdrawal terms, and relevant jurisdiction—details not established by general fraud guidance.

What to do if you already sent crypto or shared credentials

  1. Stop sending money. Do not pay purported withdrawal taxes, release fees, or deposits to a recovery agent.
  2. Secure potentially compromised accounts. If you shared wallet credentials or account details, contact the relevant provider using an independently verified channel. Regain control where possible, change passwords, and monitor for suspicious access or transactions.
  3. Preserve the evidence. Keep messages, emails, website details, wallet addresses, and transaction records. For a cryptocurrency report, the FBI says useful information includes the wallet addresses, cryptocurrency type and amount, date and time, and transaction hash.
  4. Report the incident. In the United States, report suspected cryptocurrency investment fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. The appropriate reporting body and remedies vary by country; outside the United States, use your local official reporting channels.
  5. Watch for a second scam. The FBI warns that purported recovery businesses may contact victims through comments, search results, or direct messages, request upfront payment, and then disappear or demand more. Private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders. Do not pay unsolicited recovery agents or give them more personal or financial information; report their approach as well.

What the reported loss figures do—and do not—show

The FTC reported that more than 46,000 people had reported losing over $1 billion to crypto scams since the start of 2021 in a 2022 data spotlight. That is a historical reporting window, not a current annual total. The FBI’s August 11, 2023 recovery-scam alert reproduced an IC3 figure of more than $2.5 billion in reported cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses for 2022 alone. That figure concerns reported crypto investment fraud, not all crypto crime. Neither number measures the share of presales that are scams. FTC 2022 data spotlight; FBI recovery-scam alert.
