Crypto in 2025: What Investors Need to Know About the Bull Run

A look back at crypto in 2025: what first-half market figures show, why Bitcoin and Ether diverged, and how direct holdings and ETPs differ in risk.

Crypto did not move as one market in 2025. In the first half, Bitcoin rose while Ether and the crypto market overall fell; a summary of CoinGecko’s 2025 annual report later characterized full-year Bitcoin and total-market performance as negative. The year is a reminder that a “bull run” label can obscure sharp differences between assets, changing market conditions and risks that can include losing an entire investment.

What happened to crypto prices in 2025?

ESMA’s September 2025 report gives a first-half snapshot, not a full-year return: the aggregate crypto-asset market was valued at €3 trillion at the end of June, down 10% from €3.3 trillion in December 2024. Over that same first half, Bitcoin gained 4% and accounted for 61% of total crypto market value by the end of June. Ether lost 34%.

Those figures describe different things: the €3 trillion figure is the market’s aggregate valuation, Bitcoin’s 4% is its change over the first half, and the 61% figure is Bitcoin’s share of the market at one point in time. They do not show that every asset followed Bitcoin’s path.

For the full year, a CoinGecko 2025 annual-report summary characterized Bitcoin and the total crypto market as having negative performance. That summary does not establish exact annual returns, so the first-half figures above should not be presented as full-year results.

What drove the market’s changing direction?

ESMA reported that broad U.S. tariff announcements were followed by crypto price declines in early April 2025, and that prices rebounded after the tariffs were suspended later that month. This is one account of market context, not a complete explanation of crypto price movements.

Crypto also became more connected with traditional financial markets and services. Coinbase said in its SEC-filed annual report that it completed its acquisition of Deribit in August 2025, expanded trading and listings, and recorded highs in USDC market capitalization. Those are company-reported developments; they do not establish that crypto investments performed well or are suitable for a particular investor.

Is it too late to invest in Bitcoin?

Price history alone cannot answer that question or determine what an asset will do next. The 2025 record shows why a broad market label is a poor substitute for examining an individual asset: Bitcoin rose in the first half while Ether fell, and the aggregate market also declined over that period. The later full-year summary points in a negative direction for Bitcoin and the total market, but does not supply a verified exact return here.

Rather than treating a past rally—or fear of missing one—as a reason to buy, consider whether a possible total loss fits your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy put the point plainly in a March 23, 2023 investor alert: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” This is a caution, not a personalized investment recommendation.

Direct crypto and exchange-traded products are different ways to get exposure

Direct ownership and exchange-traded products (ETPs) differ in custody, structure, fees and trading arrangements. An ETP may reduce the need for an investor to manage wallet keys or use a crypto platform directly, but it does not remove the price risk of the underlying asset. Compare the specific product’s prospectus, fees and terms rather than relying on a generic label.

Consideration Direct crypto holding Crypto ETP
What you hold The crypto asset itself, held through a platform or in a wallet. An investment product providing exposure through its stated structure.
Custody and access You may depend on a platform’s custody and withdrawal terms, or take responsibility for wallet access and private keys. The product handles the underlying asset or contracts; investors still depend on the sponsor and the product’s operating arrangements.
Price and product risks Crypto volatility, liquidity constraints, platform failure or withdrawal suspensions, hacking, malware and fraud can affect access or value. Crypto volatility remains; the product may also have tracking deviation and sponsor fees. The SEC bulletin notes concerns about fraud or manipulation in underlying crypto markets.
What to check Trading venue, liquidity, custody arrangements, withdrawal terms and how access credentials are protected. Whether the product is spot or futures-based, its prospectus, fees, tracking approach and trading conditions.

Spot and futures ETPs do not hold exposure the same way

As distinguished in an SEC staff bulletin, futures ETPs obtain exposure through futures contracts, while spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs hold the underlying crypto asset. The bulletin also notes that spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs described there are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even though such products are sometimes called “ETFs” in public usage. The label alone does not explain a product’s structure.

The SEC bulletin reflects staff views; it is not a rule, regulation or statement of the Commission. Its discussion is U.S.-focused. Investors should consult current product documents and applicable local rules rather than treating it as global legal advice.

Risks that can turn a price decline into a larger loss

The SEC’s U.S.-focused investor alert lists risks beyond price volatility. A crypto platform or other entity holding assets may fail or suspend withdrawals; assets can be exposed to hacking or malware; fraud is possible; and investor protections may be weak or absent. Illiquidity can make it difficult to sell when desired. In some cases, losses can be total.

  • Custody: Understand who controls the assets and what happens if a platform fails or restricts withdrawals.
  • Access and security: Direct self-custody shifts responsibility for private keys and wallet access to the holder; losing access can mean losing control of the assets.
  • Liquidity: A quoted price does not guarantee that an asset can be sold promptly at that price.
  • Fraud: Verify claims independently. Urgent pressure, promised or guaranteed returns, secrecy, and assurances that withdrawals will always be available are reasons to investigate carefully—not proof that an offer is legitimate.

A hardware wallet is an optional tool some direct holders consider for managing keys; it does not eliminate the responsibility to protect access or the risk of loss, and it is not suitable or necessary for every investor.

Why meme coins and celebrity promotions need extra scrutiny

In a February 27, 2025 staff statement, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance described meme coins as generally bought for entertainment, social interaction and cultural reasons, with value driven mainly by demand and speculation and typically limited or no functionality. The statement said transactions in the category it described do not involve securities under federal securities laws and that purchasers or holders of those described meme coins are not protected by those laws.

That is a Division staff view about the category it describes—not a ruling covering every token, transaction or jurisdiction. The SEC also warns investors not to make decisions solely because a celebrity endorses an opportunity. An endorsement does not replace checking what is being offered, who is behind it and how the asset or product works.

A practical check before taking crypto risk

  1. Define the exposure. Identify the asset or product, and distinguish direct ownership from an ETP and spot exposure from futures exposure.
  2. Check the mechanics. For direct holdings, review custody, withdrawal terms and key management. For an ETP, read its current prospectus for structure, fees and tracking risks.
  3. Test the downside. Consider whether you could tolerate a large decline, inability to sell promptly, or a total loss without undermining your financial goals.
  4. Verify promotional claims. Treat urgency, guaranteed returns, secrecy and celebrity promotion as reasons to pause and check independently.
