For U.S. investors, a crypto exchange-traded product (ETP) is usually the simpler way to get crypto price exposure through a brokerage account. Buying cryptocurrency directly gives you the asset itself and may let you transfer or use it, but it also makes platform, wallet, and key-management choices part of the investment. Neither route removes the risk of crypto price swings, and the cheaper option depends on the specific product, broker, platform, and transaction.
What do you own in each case?
In U.S. market conversation, products are often called crypto ETFs. The SEC describes crypto asset exchange-traded products as securities, commonly structured as trusts holding spot crypto or as products tied to derivatives. The exact structure, rights, and limits depend on the individual product’s documents.

| Question | Crypto ETP shares | Cryptocurrency bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Shares in a listed security. The prospectus and related documents define your rights. | Crypto units held with a platform or in a wallet, depending on your custody choice. |
| Who controls custody? | The trust’s custodians and other service providers handle the underlying assets under the product’s arrangements. | A hosted platform controls custody, or you manage the keys yourself with self-custody. |
| How you trade | Buy and sell shares through a securities brokerage; the share price can differ from the underlying crypto’s value. | Buy and sell through a crypto platform or another route. Availability, fees, and transfer features vary. |
| What you can do with the asset | Holding shares does not give you personal wallet control or direct use of the crypto network. | Transfers or network use may be possible, subject to the asset, platform, and network. |
That distinction is more important than the label. An ETP is an investment security with product-specific terms; direct ownership is an asset held through a custody arrangement you choose or accept.

Compare the costs of the actual route you would use, rather than assuming an ETP or direct purchase is always cheaper. There is no universal cost winner: fees, spreads, trading frequency, and transfers differ among products and platforms.

Costs of an ETP
- Sponsor fee and product expenses: ETP issuers generally charge a sponsor fee that typically covers operating expenses, and the product discloses applicable fees and expenses.
- Brokerage costs and spread: A purchase or sale may also involve brokerage charges and the difference between the price at which shares can be bought and sold.
- Effect on the product: SEC guidance issued in July 2025 notes that an ETP may sell some underlying crypto to pay fees and expenses. As a result, the amount of crypto represented by a share can decline over time.
Costs of buying crypto directly
- Trading costs: Separate any commission from the spread between the quoted buy and sell prices.
- Network and transaction costs: A transaction may involve a network or gas fee. IRS FAQ 53 lists transaction and gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions as examples of costs paid for services to effect a digital-asset purchase, sale, or disposition.
- Moving assets: A platform may charge withdrawal or transfer fees. A transfer between wallets you own is not the same transaction as a purchase or sale; the tax treatment of costs depends on what the cost relates to.
For a fair comparison, check the current prospectus and broker fee schedule for the ETP, and the platform’s trading, withdrawal, and transfer terms for direct crypto. Include the spread and any one-off or recurring charges that apply to your intended use.
What risks change—and what risks remain?
Both routes expose you to crypto-market volatility. An ETP is designed to provide exposure to an underlying crypto asset or reference, but its share price may deviate from that asset’s price. Direct ownership also rises and falls with the market, while adding risks tied to the platform, wallet, keys, and transfers.

Risks specific to an ETP structure
- Tracking, valuation, and liquidity: The share price may not match the underlying crypto’s value, and product liquidity or valuation can affect trading.
- Reliance on service providers: Shareholders depend on the sponsor, custodians, and other providers that operate the product.
- Product terms and rights: Rights can be limited, and the treatment of events such as forks or airdrops is product-specific. Review the prospectus and other product disclosures.
- Other disclosed risks: SEC materials identify potential technology and cybersecurity, legal, regulatory, and tax risks, among other product-specific concerns.
Risks of direct ownership
- Platform risk: A trading or custody platform can face fraud, operational problems, or other counterparty risks.
- Wallet and key risk: With self-custody, losing a private key or failing to protect it can mean losing access. Hosted custody shifts key control to the platform rather than removing custody risk.
- Transfer and network risk: Transfers require operational care, and crypto networks can face attacks or technical problems.
These are different risk profiles, not a ranking that makes one route categorically safer. An ETP can avoid some risks of personally transacting on a crypto platform or managing wallet keys, but it introduces product and service-provider risks.

Does an ETP let you redeem shares for crypto?
Do not assume that holding ETP shares gives you a personal right to exchange them for bitcoin, ether, or another crypto asset. The product documents set out shareholder rights and redemption arrangements. The SEC’s July 2025 action concerning in-kind creations and redemptions applies to authorized participants; it does not mean ordinary retail investors can redeem their shares directly for crypto.

In a January 10, 2024 statement on spot bitcoin ETPs, SEC Chair Gary Gensler wrote: “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” The distinction is a useful reminder that approval of a securities product is not an endorsement of its underlying asset.

Do not assume that direct crypto and ETP shares receive identical tax treatment. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property; the reporting rules for applicable digital-asset transactions are distinct from the product-specific tax reporting that applies to a security. Check the ETP’s tax documents and current IRS guidance for your circumstances.

Direct digital-asset transactions
The IRS says applicable sales, exchanges, dispositions, and digital-asset income must be reported, whether or not a transaction produced a gain or loss. For a sale for dollars, IRS FAQ 52 describes gain or loss as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized; transaction costs allocable to the sale reduce the amount realized. Keep records that support the asset’s basis, transaction details, and fair market value.
For units held with a custodial broker, IRS FAQ 85 describes identification requirements for transactions after December 31, 2025, including timely identification using broker-designated identifiers and adequate records. The requirements depend on the transaction, custody arrangement, timing, and taxpayer’s facts.

ETP shares
Use the product’s tax documents and your brokerage records to determine how your ETP transactions should be reported. The fact that a product holds or references crypto does not, by itself, establish that its shareholders have the same tax treatment as people who transact in digital assets directly.
Which route fits your priorities?
- Consider an ETP if you want crypto exposure inside a securities brokerage and do not need personal control of, or direct network use for, the underlying crypto. Before buying, review its structure, fees, risks, and stated holder rights.
- Consider direct ownership if the ability to hold, transfer, or use the crypto matters to you and you are prepared to choose a custody method, account for transaction costs, and maintain records.
- Pause and compare first if you are choosing only by a headline fee or the word “ETF.” Include spreads, product expenses, platform charges, potential transfer costs, and the custody responsibilities attached to each route.
This comparison is limited to U.S. investors and does not assess an individual portfolio or tax situation. Product availability, fees, and tax instructions can change; verify current disclosures and guidance before acting.
