Choose self-custody if you want direct control and can reliably protect and recover your keys. Neither arrangement is universally safer or better: the right fit depends on who you trust to manage access and whether you can maintain a dependable recovery plan.
What custody and self-custody mean
A crypto wallet generally does not hold coins or tokens themselves; it holds the private keys or passcodes used to authorize transactions. Losing access to a private key can mean permanently losing access to the associated assets. The SEC explains these basics in its Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors.

Third-party custody
An exchange or dedicated custodian controls access to the private keys on your behalf. You rely on the provider’s systems and procedures to access and transact with your assets. This can reduce the need to manage keys yourself, but it makes the provider’s security, business continuity, and terms part of your risk.
Self-custody
You control access to the keys directly and take responsibility for protecting them and maintaining a way to recover your wallet. That means planning for a lost, damaged, or compromised device as well as protecting the recovery information. A provider is no longer the central point of dependence, but mistakes or loss of access can be irreversible.

Hot versus cold is a separate choice
“Hot” and “cold” describe a wallet’s connection to the internet; “self-custody” and “third-party custody” describe who controls the keys. These are not interchangeable categories: hot and cold options exist under both custody arrangements, according to the SEC’s investor bulletin.
- Hot wallets connect to the internet, which can make transactions convenient while exposing the wallet to online threats.
- Cold wallets are typically physical devices and are generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but are less convenient and can be lost, damaged, or stolen.
A cold device does not remove the need for a recovery plan. A seed phrase may restore a wallet, so store it securely and never share it. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet.

Compare the trade-offs that matter to you
| Factor | Third-party custody | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls key access? | The custodian controls access to the private keys. | You control access to the private keys. |
| Security and recovery | You depend on the provider’s security and recovery procedures. | You must secure the keys and recovery information and plan for device loss or damage. |
| Provider failure | A hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy may prevent access to assets. | You do not depend on a custodian, but losing or compromising your own access may cause permanent loss. |
| Convenience and online exposure | Depends on the provider’s wallet options and access process; hot and cold options are both possible. | Depends on your wallet setup; hot and cold options are both possible, with different convenience and exposure trade-offs. |
| Supported assets | Depends on the provider; check that it supports the assets you intend to hold. | Depends on the wallet and its compatibility; confirm support before transferring assets. |
| Privacy and data handling | Review what information the provider collects and how it handles it. | You avoid relying on a custodian for key access, but the privacy implications depend on the wallet and services you use. |
| Use of assets and fees | Review whether assets may be lent or commingled, and check fees for setup, maintenance, transactions, transfers, and closing an account. | You manage the wallet directly; check any wallet or transaction costs relevant to your setup. |
Use your circumstances to make the choice
Third-party custody may fit if
- You do not want to personally manage private keys or recovery phrases.
- You are comfortable relying on a provider and can investigate its security, operating procedures, and financial and legal terms.
- You value the provider’s access process enough to accept its potential fees, data practices, and failure risks.
Self-custody may fit if
- Direct control of key access matters more to you than having a provider manage it.
- You can set up and maintain a wallet, secure the seed phrase, and plan for device loss or damage.
- You accept that losing or exposing your keys or recovery information can leave you without access, with no custodian to restore it.
A hybrid approach is also possible
You can evaluate using different custody arrangements for different assets or purposes. There is no allocation that is right for everyone; consider the risks and recovery plan for each arrangement rather than assuming that combining them removes either set of risks.
Questions to ask before choosing a custodian
Do not rely on a provider’s general security claims alone. Ask for details and read the applicable account and custody terms, especially:

- Does the provider use subcontractors for custody, and what happens if one fails?
- Which assets are supported, and what procedures apply if the provider shuts down or becomes insolvent?
- Is any insurance available? What assets, events, and limits does it cover, and what exclusions apply? Do not assume crypto assets receive bank-deposit protections.
- Can the provider lend, rehypothecate, or commingle customer assets?
- What personal information is collected, how is it handled, and what fees apply to setup, maintenance, transactions, transfers, and account closure?
What the current U.S. regulatory update does—and does not—mean
On October 1, 2026, the SEC announced proposed rules and amendments addressing crypto custody by investment advisers and regulated funds. The proposal would allow self-custody in certain circumstances and permit state trust companies to act as custodians subject to conditions. It is a proposal concerning advisers and regulated funds—not a recommendation for individual retail holders or a determination of which choice suits them. See the SEC announcement for its scope.
