Which Cricket plans include Canada and Mexico roaming?
Cricket’s plan descriptions identify Smart Unlimited and Supreme Unlimited as including talk, text, and data to and from Canada and Mexico. Select Unlimited includes Canada-and-Mexico calling and texting, but its current description does not establish the same included roaming-data benefit. Multi-Month and some legacy plans may qualify; confirm the exact plan before relying on roaming.

What “no extra cost” means
On a qualifying plan, Cricket describes roaming in Canada and Mexico as included rather than charged separately by the day or megabyte. You still pay the plan’s regular price. Moving to a higher-priced eligible plan can raise your monthly bill, and taxes, device costs, and optional services remain separate. Cricket Passport is a separate paid add-on; the included benefit does not make Passport free.
Roaming data is not guaranteed to be high speed
Cricket warns that international roaming data may be reduced to 2G speeds. Actual service also depends on the roaming partner, location, compatible device, and network conditions. “Unlimited” in a plan description is not a promise of unlimited high-speed data abroad.
- Messaging, email, maps, and light browsing may be usable.
- Video streaming, large uploads, cloud backups, and hotspot use may be slow or unreliable.
- A roaming indicator means the phone has registered on another network; it does not mean performance will match service at home.

Long stays are limited by a primary-use rule
Cricket says the customer’s primary usage must remain in the United States. Its published language says calls, texts, and data used from Canada cannot exceed 50% of total usage over a consecutive three-month period; otherwise, service may be suspended or terminated under applicable terms. This is a long-term primary-use restriction, not a guaranteed monthly allotment of half your service abroad. Travelers spending extended periods in either country should check the terms for their particular plan. Cricket’s international FAQ describes the restriction.

Roaming, international calling, and Passport are different services
International calling means calling another country from the United States. Roaming means using your phone while physically abroad. Cricket states that its international-calling add-on does not itself provide roaming; the two services should not be confused.
- In Canada or Mexico: Eligible plans may include calls and texts within the country and to or from the United States, as well as roaming data. Check the exact plan terms for destinations and use.
- Calling from the United States: Some plans include calls and texts to Canada and Mexico, but that does not establish roaming data when you travel.
- Other destinations: Cricket Passport is a separate paid option for travel beyond the included Canada-and-Mexico footprint. Its 5GB-for-5-days option ends when you use 5GB or reach five days, whichever comes first. Passport requires an eligible plan, and its terms do not support mobile hotspot data.
Cricket’s international-calling page explains the calling distinction, while its roaming support page describes Passport. Cricket’s published FAQ also notes that calls and messages from the United States to Canada’s Northern Territories may not be included in the ordinary Canada/Mexico calling benefit.
Prepare your phone before crossing the border
- Confirm your plan: Check the exact plan name in myCricket or your account, then verify that it includes roaming data in the country you will visit—not only international calling.
- Check your device and account: The phone must be compatible with a supported roaming partner, and the account must be in good standing.
- Enable data roaming if needed: The setting is under cellular or mobile-network settings, but its precise location varies by device, operating-system version, and carrier software.
- Prepare for limited speed: Download offline maps and travel details; disable automatic photo backups, app updates, and video autoplay if you need to conserve usable data.
- Keep a backup: Save account credentials and Cricket support details. Consider Wi-Fi or a local SIM/eSIM if you will need substantial data.
Cricket says eligible customers do not need a new SIM or a different provider just to use the included Canada/Mexico feature. Coverage still depends on partner-network availability and where you travel.
What to do if service does not work
No data after arrival
- Confirm data roaming is enabled and that your plan has the roaming benefit.
- Toggle airplane mode, then restart the phone to prompt it to register again.
- Check whether the phone is selecting a supported network automatically. Use manual network selection only if Cricket support or your device maker recommends it.
- If data remains unavailable, use Wi-Fi or a local eSIM while you confirm coverage and account eligibility with Cricket.
Calls work but data does not
Voice service does not guarantee data access. Data roaming may be disabled, the device may not register for data on the partner network, or that partner may have limitations at your location.

Data connects but is too slow
Reduced speeds may be consistent with Cricket’s roaming terms. Limit background use and save large downloads for Wi-Fi.
A charge appears unexpectedly
Check whether the line qualified for included roaming, whether Passport was added, whether use occurred outside Canada or Mexico, and whether the charge is for a separate calling feature, device service, tax, or another add-on.
When a local SIM, eSIM, or Wi-Fi makes more sense
Included Cricket roaming is most useful for shorter trips when you mainly need navigation, messaging, email, and occasional calls while keeping your U.S. number. A local SIM or travel eSIM may be a better fit for a long stay or heavy data use, but requires an unlocked, compatible phone and can complicate access to your primary number. Prices and coverage vary by country.
