Craig Wright was sentenced to 12 months in prison by the UK High Court in December 2024, but the sentence was suspended for two years. The court found him in contempt for threatening and bringing a new lawsuit in breach of earlier injunctions—not simply for claiming to have invented Bitcoin. The suit was reported as worth £911 billion, or about $1.1 trillion; that was the amount claimed, not money awarded to Wright.
Was Craig Wright sent to prison?
No. On 19 December 2024, Mr Justice James Mellor imposed a 12-month prison term but suspended it for two years. Under the official sentencing order, the committal is suspended until 20 December 2026, provided Wright commits no further breach of the final order during that period. The order sets out a conditional consequence; it does not mean Wright was immediately jailed.
What was the $1.1 trillion claim?
Wright’s new lawsuit was reported by Ars Technica on 20 December 2024 as having a stated value of £911 billion, approximately $1.1 trillion. That figure described the value he claimed, not a damages award or a sum the court ordered anyone to pay. The contempt proceeding addressed whether filing the new claim breached existing court orders.
Why did the High Court find him in contempt?
The contempt application by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) concerned alleged breaches of an order made on 16 July 2024. That order included injunctions restricting Wright from bringing claims against others and from threatening such claims. His new case named “BTC Core (a partnership)” and SquareUp Europe Limited. On 19 December, the High Court found Wright in contempt on five grounds after he threatened and brought the new claim.

How the earlier ruling on Satoshi Nakamoto fits in
The contempt case followed the High Court’s earlier ruling on Wright’s claims about Bitcoin’s origins. The court declared that he was not the author of the Bitcoin white paper and was not the person who used the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto between 2008 and 2011. Mellor put the identity finding this way: “Dr Wright is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in the period between 2008 and 2011.”
That finding provides context for the dispute, but the prison sentence arose from contempt of court: the later threats and lawsuit were found to breach injunctions. It is therefore misleading to describe the sentence as punishment simply for publicly claiming to be Bitcoin’s creator.

Why the new lawsuit’s contents mattered
The court also considered the theory behind Wright’s new claim. On its copyright argument, Mellor reasoned that Wright could not allege infringement without asserting ownership of the rights at issue, an assertion the earlier order barred him from making in proceedings. The contempt ruling thus concerned both the restrictions imposed by the earlier order and the new case Wright brought against the named defendants.
