Re:

Could Trump’s Tariffs Make Gaming PCs and Consoles More Expensive?

A 25% U.S. chip duty does not mean a 25% increase in gaming PC or console prices. A possible broader tariff remained under consideration, with no final rate or price estimate established.

Not under the tariff already in force. A January 2026 U.S. action sets a 25% duty on a narrow group of advanced computing chips and certain derivatives, with an exception for qualifying imports used in non-data-center consumer applications. A separate tariff expansion that might reach gaming consoles was reported as under consideration in August—not as a final rule. No device-specific rate or reliable retail-price increase has been established.

What the January 2026 tariff actually covers

On January 14, 2026, the White House issued a semiconductor proclamation under Section 232. It imposed a 25% ad valorem duty, effective January 15, on specified advanced computing chips and certain derivative products. The proclamation is not a general 25% tariff on electronics, and its terms include exceptions. In particular, the specified duty does not apply to covered products imported for qualifying non-data-center consumer applications, among other listed uses. The controlling details are in the White House proclamation.

The proclamation’s 25% figure applies only to products within its defined scope and subject to its exceptions. It should not be read as a 25% surcharge on a gaming computer or console’s retail price.

What is known about a possible expansion

On August 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported, citing a Politico report and unnamed sources, that the administration was considering another round of semiconductor tariffs. One possible approach discussed in that reporting could extend duties beyond chips to products containing chips, including gaming consoles. The report said existing exemptions might not carry over, while also warning that the framework could change substantially. This was reporting about deliberations, not an enacted tariff rule: it did not establish a final product schedule, rate, effective date, or price impact. See Tom’s Hardware’s report.

Are gaming PCs included?

The report’s examples included laptops, gaming consoles, and data-center servers; it did not specifically establish that finished gaming desktop PCs would be covered. Nor does a chip inside a finished device automatically make the whole device subject to the January duty. Imported components sold separately may have different tariff classifications and treatment from a completed computer or console.

Customs treatment depends on the applicable product classification and the operative tariff documents, not simply on the consumer label “gaming PC” or “console.” The USITC announced that 2026 HTS Revision 20 was published on September 28, 2026; product-specific questions should be checked against the current USITC tariff information portal and applicable implementation guidance. Existing action versus reported proposal

Question January 2026 action Possible later expansion
Status White House proclamation issued January 14, 2026; duty effective January 15, 2026. Source: White House. Reported as under consideration on August 27, 2026, based on Politico reporting and unnamed sources; no final rule established. Source: Tom’s Hardware.
Scope Specified advanced computing chips and certain derivatives, subject to the proclamation’s terms and exceptions. A possible approach could reach chip-containing products, including gaming consoles; final covered products were not stated in the report.
Consumer-use treatment Specified duty excludes covered products imported for qualifying non-data-center consumer applications, among other listed uses. Whether existing exemptions would carry over was uncertain; the report said they might not.
Rate and effective date 25% ad valorem, effective January 15, 2026, for the covered group under the proclamation. Not stated in the report: no final rate or effective date.
Gaming-device price effect No general gaming-PC or console price increase follows from the stated rate alone. No sourced device-level retail estimate was provided.

What this means for buyers

  • Do not assume a console or gaming PC has already become more expensive because of the reported proposal; it was not a final tariff action.
  • There is no sourced figure for how much either category might cost more if a broader tariff is adopted. A duty on an imported product would not, by itself, establish the retail pass-through to buyers.
  • For a particular device or separately imported component, check its classification, origin, applicable exceptions, and current implementation documents. A broad product name is not enough to determine customs treatment.

Why the administration cited semiconductor supply

The January proclamation says the United States fully manufactures only approximately 10% of the chips it requires and consumes roughly one quarter of the world’s semiconductors. Those figures are the administration’s stated supply rationale, not a forecast of gaming-hardware prices. The proclamation also says: “Depending on the status or resolution of such negotiations, I may consider imposing significant tariffs on imports of semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and their derivative products, as well as an accompanying tariff offset program to incentivize domestic manufacturing.” That signals the possibility of further action; it does not confirm a later tariff on gaming devices. The White House proclamation’s supply figures and operative text provide the context.
