Prince Abdullah and Sheffield United’s new owners discussed the possibility of him returning to the club in some capacity in the future, the BBC reported after COH Sports completed its takeover in December 2024. That was a discussion—not an agreed role or a confirmed return. Later reports about a payment dispute and EFL scrutiny do not report that Abdullah took up a position at the club.
What did Prince Abdullah say about returning to Sheffield United?
After the sale, Abdullah told BBC Radio Sheffield that he had met COH Sports leaders Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy and offered them advice about mistakes he had made and how they might avoid them. He said: “I told them they can ask me about anything, anytime.” The BBC reported that the parties discussed the possibility of Abdullah rejoining the club in some capacity at some point in the future. It did not report that they agreed on a role. BBC Sport, 30 December 2024
Did Abdullah agree to rejoin the club?
No agreement or appointment was reported. The BBC described a possible future return as a subject discussed by Abdullah and the incoming owners. His offer to be available for advice is not evidence that he accepted an official position.
Why did Abdullah sell Sheffield United?
COH Sports completed its acquisition in December 2024, ending Abdullah’s 11-year spell as owner. The BBC reported that the club had secured two promotions to the Premier League during his tenure. Abdullah said he was proud of that period but had mixed feelings about leaving. He also described club ownership as emotionally exhausting and said he wanted a break. BBC Sport, 30 December 2024

What happened after the takeover?
Later coverage focused on a dispute over the purchase price and the EFL’s consideration of possible regulatory issues. Those developments are separate from the 2024 discussion about whether Abdullah might return.
The payment dispute reported in July 2026
The Guardian reported on 8 July 2026 that United World, Abdullah’s former ownership group, alleged that about £35m remained due after the sale. The report said the EFL was examining the situation and had requested observations. It also reported the owners’ position that the restructuring was intended to support long-term financial sustainability and was unrelated to the outstanding matter. These are attributed positions, not a final determination of liability. The Guardian, 8 July 2026

The winding-up order reported in August 2026
The Independent reported that the High Court wound up COH Sports Bidco on 19 August 2026. It said the EFL was considering the implications under its regulations and continuing to consider other regulatory matters. The Independent described a 12-point deduction as a possible consequence if the EFL found an ownership-regulation breach—not as a penalty already imposed. The Independent, 19 August 2026
