The evidence available does not establish that election uncertainty caused a change in any of these household costs.
What election uncertainty can—and cannot—tell you
Uncertainty can affect expectations and decision timing without proving that it caused a particular price movement. The Federal Reserve’s October 23, 2024 Beige Book reported that some manufacturers were holding orders amid uncertainty around the presidential election and that some commercial builders were waiting until after the election to begin projects. Those are reported business decisions, not evidence that the election changed gas, grocery or mortgage prices.

A 2020 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by Scott R. Baker, Aniket Baksy, Nicholas Bloom, Steven J. Davis and Jonathan A. Rodden examined economic policy uncertainty around national elections in 23 countries. Its authors reported that average economic policy uncertainty index values were 13% higher in the month of and month before an election than in other months of the same election cycle, conditional on country effects, time effects and country-specific time trends. For close and polarized U.S. presidential elections, they reported index values 28% higher in the election month than in elections that were neither close nor polarized. These are historical comparisons of an uncertainty index, not estimates of household price changes. The paper was published in October 2020.
Expectations are also distinct from prices that have already changed. In its April 7, 2026 release of the March 2026 Survey of Consumer Expectations, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said median year-ahead gas-price change expectations rose 5.3 percentage points to 9.4%, while food-price change expectations rose 0.7 percentage point to 6%. Median inflation uncertainty increased at all measured horizons. These are respondents’ expectations recorded in March, not realized price increases, and the release does not attribute the changes to an election.

What drives gasoline prices?
Gasoline prices are exposed to world crude supply and demand, refinery capacity and outages, refined-product availability, transportation and distribution costs, taxes, and competition among local retailers. A disruption to oil production or shipping can therefore affect fuel markets regardless of the domestic election calendar.
For a dated example, the Federal Reserve’s Monetary Policy Report published July 10, 2026 said energy prices measured by the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose 24% over the 12 months ending in May 2026. It attributed much of the increase to a jump in oil and gasoline prices after conflict in the Middle East constrained shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and damaged regional energy infrastructure. That episode illustrates a supply-and-logistics shock; it is not evidence of an election effect.

What drives grocery and food prices?
Food costs are built from multiple inputs. Agricultural and livestock commodities matter, alongside processing, labor, packaging, transport, imported goods and other business costs. Tariffs can affect some products and inputs, but their effect on shelf prices depends on how consumers, firms, importers and exporters respond; the impact is not necessarily identical across foods.

The Federal Reserve reported that PCE food prices increased 2.4% over the 12 months ending in May 2026, compared with 1.8% over the 12 months ending in May 2025. It named higher tariffs and agricultural and livestock commodity prices among contributors to the increase. These figures measure PCE food prices; they are not the change in every household’s grocery bill or the CPI grocery-store index. Both readings are from the Federal Reserve’s July 2026 report.

What drives mortgage rates—and how the Fed fits in
A mortgage quote is the price of borrowing, not the price of a home or the cost of rent. Long-term Treasury yields, yields and spreads on mortgage-backed securities, inflation expectations, credit conditions and investor demand all influence mortgage pricing. The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 report identifies agency mortgage-backed-security yields as an important factor in home mortgage rates.
The Fed’s policy rate can influence other rates and broader financial conditions, but it does not directly set an individual borrower’s mortgage quote. Changes pass through indirectly and are not immediate. As the Federal Reserve explains, “However, there are many factors that affect inflation and employment.” It also says, “And while the linkages from monetary policy to both inflation and employment are not direct or immediate, monetary policy is an important factor.” These statements appear in the Board’s FAQ, last updated July 19, 2024.

Keep housing-service inflation separate from mortgage interest. The Federal Reserve reported that housing-service prices rose 3.2% over the 12 months ending in May 2026, down from 4.1% over the 12 months ending in May 2025. Those are PCE housing-service price changes, not mortgage-rate readings. The figures are in the July 2026 report.
How to read a price headline during an election year
- Identify the measure. A grocery-store price index, PCE food prices, a household’s receipt and mortgage interest rates are different things. Gasoline, food and housing-service inflation can move in different directions.
- Check whether it is an expectation or an observed price. Survey expectations describe what respondents think may happen; they do not show that prices have already risen.
- Look for a specific transmission mechanism. For fuel, that may be crude supply, refining or shipping. For food, it may be commodities, tariffs or other inputs. For a mortgage, examine longer-term yields and mortgage-backed-security pricing rather than assuming a policy-rate change directly set the quote.
- Separate timing from causation. A price change occurring during an election year does not establish that election uncertainty caused it. The evidence cited here documents uncertainty, expectations and specific market pressures, but does not isolate an election-year causal effect on these costs.
The Federal Reserve’s July 10, 2026 report is the latest broad official price account cited here; its key readings run through May 2026. It does not provide an October 2026 snapshot of current household prices.
