The $2,300 iPhone was a conditional analyst estimate from April 2025, not an Apple-announced price. Rosenblatt Securities analyst Barton Crockett estimated that a 1TB iPhone 16 Pro Max could reach about $2,287 if Apple passed through a projected 43% price increase. Reuters later reported that Apple held prices steady for its September 2025 iPhone lineup. The figure is historical, not a current U.S. price quote.
Where did the $2,300 estimate come from?
On April 3, 2025, amid the Trump administration’s newly announced tariff regime, Rosenblatt Securities analyst Barton Crockett modeled what could happen if Apple passed an estimated 43% increase on to U.S. customers. The calculation was applied to specific iPhone 16 prices reported at the time—not to every iPhone or a later model.
| Model in the April 2025 estimate | Reported starting price | Price after a modeled 43% increase |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 | $799 | $799 × 1.43 = $1,142.57, or about $1,143 |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max, 1TB | $1,599 | $1,599 × 1.43 = $2,286.57, or about $2,287—often rounded to nearly $2,300 |
These were projections, not prices Apple announced. Reuters reported the estimate, and MacRumors also described the model-specific calculation. Reuters report republished by Investing.com · MacRumors
Why wasn’t the tariff rate the same as the projected price increase?
Early-April 2025 reporting discussed a 54% tariff on Chinese imports. That tariff figure and Crockett’s estimated 43% consumer-price increase were different numbers with different meanings. The 54% described tariff treatment being discussed at the time; 43% was the analyst’s estimate of how much retail prices might rise if Apple passed the cost through. It was not a rule requiring Apple to raise every iPhone’s price by 43%. Reuters report republished by Investing.com

Importers generally pay tariffs at the border. Whether consumers later bear some or all of that cost depends on business decisions and market conditions. Apple could raise prices, absorb costs through lower margins, alter product or storage configurations, negotiate with suppliers, adjust sourcing or assembly, or bring inventory into the country before a tariff applies. Demand, existing inventory, currency movements, and the tariff’s precise legal treatment can also affect the outcome.
That is why multiplying a tariff rate by a phone’s sticker price does not establish its eventual retail price. The 43% calculation was a pass-through scenario, not a forecast guaranteed by the tariff itself.

Why were iPhones considered exposed?
Most iPhones were assembled in China at the time of the April 2025 reporting, making China-related import duties a concern for phones shipped from there to the United States. Apple’s supply chain also involved India and other countries, however. The tariff treatment of a particular phone or component can depend on its origin and classification; the assembly country alone does not establish the full tariff bill. Apple also took a reported short-term logistics step: Reuters said the company chartered cargo flights to move roughly 600 tons of iPhones from India to the United States, potentially as many as 1.5 million units, to build inventory and reduce immediate exposure to China-related tariffs. That shipment was not evidence that Apple had moved all iPhone production out of China. Reuters report republished by Investing.com

What happened to iPhone prices afterward?
In September 2025, Reuters reported that Apple introduced a new iPhone lineup while holding prices steady, despite tariff pressure and investor expectations of increases. The report said Apple was considering other ways to offset costs, including pricing or configuration decisions. That later reporting showed that the dramatic increase in the April scenario had not immediately appeared in the reported launch prices; it did not turn the earlier estimate into an actual Apple price. Would making iPhones in the United States cost $3,500?
The separate $3,500 figure referred to a different scenario: the estimated cost of a U.S.-made iPhone, not the tariff pass-through price of an imported one. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives estimated that domestic production could put the price around $3,500, citing the challenge of building the labor force, supplier network, automation, and infrastructure required for large-scale manufacturing. It was an analyst estimate, not an Apple plan or an independently established production cost. Reuters coverage republished by MarketScreener · Associated Press coverage

What should buyers do if they are shopping now?
The April 2025 estimate cannot tell you the current price of an iPhone. Check Apple’s live U.S. store and compare the total cost of the purchase paths available to you:
- Direct from Apple: Check the current model, storage, financing, and carrier-activation options at Apple’s iPhone store. Current prices are not established by the historical estimate.
- Trade-in: Get a device-specific quote from Apple Trade In before checkout. The quote depends on the device and its condition; compare it with other resale options.
- Carrier offers: Compare the full commitment—not just the monthly payment—at AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. Promotions may depend on an eligible plan, trade-in, and bill credits, and leaving before credits are paid can change the effective cost.
- Refurbished or used: Apple Certified Refurbished inventory and prices vary. For used devices, check battery condition, parts history, activation lock, warranty, and seller reliability.
A phone already in U.S. inventory may not immediately reflect a later import cost. Conversely, a carrier’s discounted or “free” offer can tie savings to a multi-year service commitment. Buying abroad solely to avoid a possible U.S. price increase is not automatically cheaper after taxes, customs, travel costs, cellular compatibility, eSIM restrictions, warranty limitations, and return complications. Do not buy a high-storage Pro model solely because of the old $2,300 scenario: it was a conditional estimate for one specific configuration.
