Costco’s notice concerns Synergy Restaurant Gift Cards bought from October 27, 2025, through January 26, 2026—not every restaurant gift card sold at Costco. Synergy said it would cease operations effective January 31, 2026. Costco instructed members who cannot use a card’s remaining balance after that date to return it to a local Costco for a refund.
Which Costco restaurant gift cards are covered?
Costco’s member letter says its records show that the member or an add-on member purchased Synergy Restaurant Gift Cards during the covered window. Costco’s US notice index identifies the products by item numbers 1966389 and 1622409. The purchase dates in the letter are October 27, 2025, through January 26, 2026.

To check whether your purchase matches, compare the card or purchase record with the Synergy name, item number, and purchase date. Costco labels the listing a Product Notice. Some coverage calls it a recall, but the notice describes a possible loss of card usability, not a safety hazard.
Why did Costco issue the notice?
Costco’s letter says Synergy Gift Card Network/Synergy World would cease operations effective January 31, 2026. The shutdown is the stated reason a card’s remaining value may no longer be usable through the program.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy delicious, innovative spin on your favorite foods, including deep dish pizzas, salads, sandwiches, pastas, steaks, and so much more.
- Redeemable at participating BJs Restaurants nationwide and online.
- BJ's Gift Cards make perfect gifts for holidays, anniversaries, birthdays or any special occasion.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
What should you do if your Synergy card still has an unusable balance?
Costco’s letter says: “If after this date you are unable to use the remaining card balance, please return them to your local Costco for a refund.” The condition matters: the letter directs members to seek a refund if they cannot use the remaining balance after the shutdown date.
- Check whether the card is a Synergy Restaurant Gift Card bought between October 27, 2025, and January 26, 2026. Use the item numbers, if available, to help identify it.
- If a balance remains, determine whether you can still use it. The Costco instruction applies when the remaining balance cannot be used after January 31, 2026.
- Contact your local Costco before travelling to confirm its current procedure. The letter does not specify the refund amount or required proof of purchase, and it does not establish that every warehouse still follows the same process.
- If Costco confirms you should bring the card in, take the card and any purchase information you have. The letter instructs members to return the card but does not say what documentation is mandatory.
Is this a recall of every restaurant gift card at Costco?
No. The notice names Synergy Restaurant Gift Cards and a defined purchase window; it is not a blanket notice covering all restaurant gift cards Costco sells. ABC News reported that Domino’s gift cards then being sold by Costco were not part of this notice. That reported exclusion should not be expanded into a list of other unaffected brands.

ABC News also reported on February 17, 2026, that a definitive list of impacted restaurants had not been shared. A restaurant’s name alone is therefore not enough to determine whether a card is covered; check for the Synergy program and the purchase details above.
