Corteva’s Carbon Initiative was a farmer-facing program intended to pay for qualifying agricultural practices that could generate carbon credits. Corteva launched it in 2021, and its materials described agronomic support, digital recordkeeping, measurement and verification, and farmer payments. Those published details are historical: Corteva’s 2025 Impact Report still names the initiative in a partnerships metric, but does not establish that enrollment is open or state today’s terms.
What is an agricultural carbon program, and how does it work?
An agricultural carbon program seeks to turn changes in farm management—such as planting cover crops or reducing tillage—into credits that can be sold to buyers seeking to account for greenhouse-gas emissions. In Corteva’s description of the model, an aggregator helps farmers organize data and reach buyers; eligible practices and data-driven models are used to quantify potential credits. A credit calculation is not, by itself, proof that a practice caused additional emissions reductions or that the climate benefit will persist. Corteva’s Carbon Programs 101 explainer also advises farmers to scrutinize program contracts.
Corteva announced its Carbon and Ecosystem Services portfolio on April 8, 2021. It initially targeted row-crop farmers in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa, with the stated aim of combining agronomic support and digital tools with access to carbon markets. The launch announcement said farmers could work with other buyers after an initial period; it does not establish what any current contract permits. Corteva’s April 2021 launch announcement
How could a farmer earn carbon credits through Corteva?
Corteva’s 2022 Sustainability and ESG Report described a five-step process. This is the process as reported at that time, not a guarantee of the current workflow:

The Corteva report described credit payments at $15 per ton of CO₂e and estimated earnings of $5–$20 per acre per year. These are historical figures from the 2022 report, not current offers or guaranteed returns. Corteva 2022 Sustainability and ESG Report
Partner roles also varied across Corteva’s announcements. Its August 2021 crop-year announcement named Indigo/Carbon by Indigo for measuring, generating, and selling credits and referred to Climate Action Reserve standards; the 2022 report separately described ESMC verification. These are period-specific descriptions, not evidence that the organizations shared one unchanged workflow or remain current partners. Corteva’s August 2021 announcement for the 2022 crop year

What payment terms and eligibility did Corteva announce?
The terms and reach changed across announcements. The figures below are company statements published for specific periods; they should not be treated as current enrollment terms.
| Announcement | What Corteva said | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| April 2021 launch | Corteva estimated $5–$20 per acre per year for farmers introducing cover crops and/or reducing tillage. The launch targeted row-crop farmers in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. | A launch-era estimate and initial footprint, not a present-day quote or eligibility list. Corteva, April 8, 2021 |
| August 2021, for the 2022 crop year | Corteva said farmers would receive 75% of credit value, with a $15-per-credit minimum. It described cover crops, reduced tillage, and increased nitrogen-use efficiency as eligible practice changes, and said the program then included 11 states. | A specific crop-year announcement. It also said higher prices might be possible based on market projections; that possibility was not a guaranteed payment. Corteva, August 26, 2021 |
| February 2022 expansion | Corteva said the initiative had expanded to 28 states and 19 crop types. | A dated expansion claim, not proof of current geographic or crop eligibility. Corteva, February 9, 2022 |
The $15-per-credit minimum in the crop-year announcement and the report’s $15-per-ton-of-CO₂e payment figure are differently worded historical claims. They should not be combined into a single current rate or used to calculate a farmer’s expected income without knowing how a current program defines, issues, and pays for credits.

- Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
- Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
- Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
- Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
- Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen
What did the pilot demonstrate—and what did it not?
In October 2022, Corteva said it had delivered initial payments to farmers in its 2021 pilot covering over 25,000 acres. The company described the pilot as testing delivery of Scope 3 emissions outcomes for food-company buyers, and said it collected additional soil samples beyond certification requirements to build a research baseline. This is a company-reported pilot result; acreage receiving payments does not establish the amount of verified climate benefit, additionality, permanence, or net emissions impact. Is Corteva’s Carbon Initiative open to farmers now?
Corteva’s 2025 Impact Report still includes the Corteva Carbon Initiative among services counted in a partnerships acreage metric. That metric combines acreage involving multiple programs and conservation partnerships; it is not a standalone tally of carbon credits, participating farmers, or acres currently available to enroll. The report does not establish current enrollment status, geography, payment terms, eligible practices, contracts, or verification partners. Farmers should confirm those details directly with Corteva before making a decision. Corteva Impact Report 2025

What should farmers check before joining any carbon program?
A carbon payment is only one part of the decision. Ask for the written terms and evaluate how the program fits the farm’s practices, records, business plans, and appetite for uncertainty.
- Eligibility: Which locations, crops, fields, and field histories qualify? Must a practice be new or changed, and which specific changes count?
- Measurement and verification: Which practices and data are used to calculate credits? Does the program use soil sampling, modeling, a registry or standard, and an independent verifier? How does it handle uncertainty and changes in estimated results?
- Payment: Is payment based on acreage, credits issued, or credits sold? What share goes to the farmer, when is payment made, and what happens if credits are not issued or sold? Confirm whether any stated minimum is guaranteed and how the program defines a credit.
- Contract and control: How long does the agreement last? What are the practice obligations, data-use terms, exclusivity rules, and rights to sell future credits elsewhere? What happens if a farmer exits or changes practices?
- Work and cost: How much recordkeeping and sampling access is required? Is agronomic support included, and are any services, inputs, or equipment charged to the farmer?
Corteva’s published materials address some historical program mechanics, but they do not answer these questions for a current contract. Treat the signed agreement—not a past announcement or an illustrative earnings estimate—as the source for present obligations and payment rules.
