Common Mercari scams try to move payment or conversation off the platform, steal login or verification details, trick sellers with fake payment notices, or pass off counterfeit or misrepresented goods. Keep every transaction and message on Mercari, verify payments in your actual account, and inspect purchases before rating. Mercari says it cannot resolve problems with transactions paid for outside its app or site.
Common Mercari scam warning signs
Mercari does not publish a prevalence ranking for scam types, so no one pattern can reliably be called the “most common.” These are practical warning signs to recognize whether you are buying or selling.

Requests to pay or communicate outside Mercari
A buyer or seller may ask you to switch to text, email, another website, or an external payment method. That can take the transaction beyond Mercari’s stated ability to resolve disputes if an item never arrives or differs from its listing. Mercari describes this as an “offline transaction” and says it cannot resolve issues with such a sale (Mercari: Is it safe to pay a seller outside of Mercari?). Keep messages and payment on the platform, and report the request.

A message that appears to come from Mercari may create urgency and ask you to click a link, sign in, or provide personal information. Mercari cautions that an imitation message can arrive as a regular chat rather than a support notification (Mercari: Fraud mitigation). Do not follow unexpected login links. Open the Mercari app yourself or type its address into your browser to check your account, and report suspicious contact.

Fake payments and overpayment tricks aimed at sellers
A scammer may send a fabricated payment notice, claim they paid twice and ask for a refund, or send a fake check for more than the asking price and ask you to return the difference. The FTC warns that fake payment notifications are used to persuade sellers to ship before they discover the payment is not real (FTC: Selling stuff online? Here’s how to avoid a scam). Check funds by signing in to the actual payment account independently. Do not ship or send money back based on an email, text, screenshot, or buyer’s claim.
Requests for verification codes or sensitive details
An interested buyer may ask for a one-time code, claiming it is needed to verify you or your listing. The FTC describes scammers using requests for Google Voice verification codes to misuse a seller’s phone number or account (FTC: Selling stuff online? Here’s how to avoid a scam). Never share a verification code with a buyer or someone who contacted you unexpectedly. Treat requests for contact or payment details, urgent transfers, and other sensitive information as warning signs.
Counterfeit or misrepresented items
A very low price on an expensive branded product is a reason to investigate, not proof that the item is fake. The FTC advises that an expensive item offered for a very low price might be counterfeit (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace). Ask for clear photos of the actual item and a complete description; check whether the details are consistent and whether the seller answers reasonable questions. Mercari also suggests checking trademark information or using its authentication service where available (Mercari: Prohibited conduct).
Pressure, urgency, or unrelated requests
Mercari flags urgent stories, requests to send money or merchandise to someone unrelated to the transaction, and requests to rate an item before it arrives as possible signs of fraud (Mercari: Fraud mitigation). Pause rather than acting under pressure. Verify the request through the transaction in Mercari, and do not rate an item you have not received and inspected.
How to assess a suspicious listing
Consider the evidence as a whole rather than treating any one detail as proof of a scam. Before buying, check:
- Photos: Do they show the actual item clearly, from useful angles, rather than only generic or stock images?
- Description: Are condition, included parts, and other important details specific and consistent?
- Price: Is it plausible compared with similar items? A strikingly low price on an expensive product calls for extra scrutiny.
- Seller history and answers: Does the seller respond clearly to reasonable questions about the item?
- Transaction conduct: Does the seller insist on an outside payment method, external website, or private contact channel? If so, do not proceed that way.
Mercari’s protections depend on following its transaction process. A convincing-looking listing or message is not a substitute for keeping payment and communication on the platform.
What to do if you suspect a scam
- Stop the risky interaction. Do not send more money, verification codes, or personal information. Stop communicating through external channels and do not follow suspicious links.
- Preserve evidence. Save the listing, messages, payment records, tracking information, and photographs of the package and item if one arrived.
- Report the issue to Mercari. Use the in-app or website Help Center and check the current Buyer Protection page for the relevant deadline (Mercari: Buyer Protection).
- Contact your financial institution or payment service if you paid outside Mercari. Ask promptly about available steps to dispute or stop the payment. The FTC also accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- For suspected account compromise or crime, use an official contact route. Reach Mercari through its app or website Help Center; do not rely on a phone number or link in an unsolicited message. Consider reporting suspected criminal activity to law enforcement.
Inspect a purchase before rating it
When an order arrives, compare it with the listing and test valuable or electronic items promptly. Mercari says rating or the end of the review window finalizes the sale, so do not rate before checking the item. If it is not as described, report it through the platform within the applicable window rather than completing the transaction first.

Is this Mercari message a scam?
A message may be suspicious if it asks you to leave Mercari, click an unexpected sign-in link, share a verification code or payment details, send money urgently, or rate something you have not received. Do not decide based on the sender name or appearance alone. Check your account by opening Mercari directly, and report the message through the platform.
