Coinbase stock began trading on Nasdaq as COIN on April 14, 2021. Its first-day closing sale price was $328.28 per share. Nasdaq’s widely cited $250 figure was only a reference price—not an offering price or a completed trade. Bitcoin is a separate asset with a continuously changing price, so its quote should not be treated as synchronized with a COIN stock-market close.
What was Coinbase stock’s debut price?
Coinbase Global’s Class A common stock began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker COIN on April 14, 2021. Coinbase’s SEC-filed 2025 annual report records a closing sale price of $328.28 per share that day. The historical close is reported in the company’s 2025 Form 10-K filed in 2026.
Coinbase announced that its registration statement had become effective on April 1, 2021, and anticipated the Nasdaq listing for April 14. See the company’s listing announcement.
Why do some accounts say Coinbase debuted at $250?
Nasdaq set a $250 reference price per share ahead of the direct listing. It was not an offering price, and it did not mean shares had already traded at $250. Nasdaq’s April 13, 2021 notice explicitly warned: “Please note that the reference price is NOT an offering price and nobody has purchased or sold shares at that price.” Read Nasdaq’s listing notice.

A reference price, a first trade, and a first-day closing price are different measures. The cited filings establish the $328.28 close, while the cited evidence does not establish a primary-source first-trade price. Do not use the $250 reference figure as Coinbase’s opening or debut trade price.
How do COIN and Bitcoin prices compare?
COIN is a publicly traded share in Coinbase Global; Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital asset. They are different instruments, and their quoted prices are not directly interchangeable. A COIN price is the price per share, while a BTC price is the price per bitcoin.

The latest located COIN figure is $178.45 per share at the October 7, 2026 regular-session close, reported by Stock Analysis. It is a dated closing quote, not a live quote for October 8.
Coinbase’s Bitcoin price page displayed $83,234.64 per BTC in a page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. The captured figure has no exact quote timestamp, so it cannot be confirmed as the BTC price at the time COIN closed. The Coinbase BTC price page is a displayed-price snapshot, not a synchronized comparison with the stock close.

For another dated reference, Investing.com’s Coinbase Pro BTC/USD historical page lists $83,348.4 on October 7, 2026. That is a separate venue and data representation, not proof of a simultaneous price with the COIN close. See Investing.com’s BTC/USD historical data.

COIN trades during equity-market sessions, while Bitcoin trades continuously. A regular-session stock close and a Bitcoin page’s displayed price can therefore refer to different moments. Without prices captured at the same timestamp and a stated comparison method, a spread or percentage difference would be misleading.
